The alternative provided by con gress should be adopted, and im mediate steps taken towards building the canal hundreds of miVs nearer, where it OU2ht to - have been built twenty years ago, across the state of Nicaragua. Tt s hoce that the dav of its C3mpletion will soon dawn The fight between President Roosevelt and organ ize'd labor is still going on, and the giants of the Unions are gathering in Washington to consider the sit uation and bring it to a decision. The President is firm in his stand to uphold and carry out the laws of the land that he has sworn to uphold and execute. The Unions are also great upholders of the . law, that is it they make the law, and it favors their side. . Some of the brightest and best men on the lab,or side of the controversy take the stand that President Roosevelt is right, and it seems to be merely a trick on the part of political opponents to endea vor to get the labor people tan gled up in the next campaign. It is to be hoped the leaders may give the subject careful consid eration, and come to a decision that will be for the best interests of the laboring men of the coun try, whether Union, or non union. . Mr. Nicholson, a Californian by birth, and holding the posi - tion of assistant paymaster in the United States Navy, while on shore in Chee Foo, China, be came intoxicated and assaulted an elderly civilian. He was tried by court martial, and the sen tence was that he be reduced five numbers in his grade. It is no wonder that a decision so shamelul should meet the disap proval of every, self-respecting offieer of the Navy. Fighting Bob Evans says the evidence was of such a startling character that the sentence should have been nothing less than dismissa from the Navy. It is known that President Xoosevelt agrees with the decision of Rear Admira! Evans and expresses his disap proval in the strongest terms. There is a tendency among offi cers of the Navy to shield scamps and popinjavs among the soi disant aristocracy of the Navy men who have succeeded in gain ing entrance into'- the ' service o the government by political pulls, or. through . other innuentia means. The guarding and main taining the dignity of the naval service should no longer be placed in the hands of officers so lacking in true dignity in their own person. Let us hope that the caustic tongue of fighting Bob will teach the sycophants of the navy a much needed lesson. The opening of the public schools in Portland on Monday of this week discloses the fact that the attendance will surpass all previous records by 1200 scholars. Here in uorvains the same con ditions exist, in, proportion to our population. The different classes are all crowded, far be yond what they should be. Not only is this imposing, an extra task on the teachers, but the scholars cannot receive the atten tion to which they are justly en titled. We are glad to note the fact that the teachers are doing their utmost to overcome the difficulties naturally incident to such a condition. For this they deserve the hearty good will and sympathy of every man and woman in Corvallis. In the primary class alone 57 little, tots are already registered, and ask ing to be guided in their first steps along the stony road to knowledge, j All honor to the tender, loving heart that smooths this pathway' to; their plodding feet.
