Loss of Appetite
Is loss of vitality, vigor or tone, and is often
a percusor of prostrating sickness.
This is why it is serious and most serious

"This scar which you see on the
back of my right hand has a history,
and whenever I look at it I drift back
mentally to the earlier days of my
life," said the old gambler, "and can
not suppress a feeling that somehow
men are often forced Into channels
which are not exactly what they would
like. While not altogether smothered
with regrets I feel that this is true
In my own case. When I recall the
series of bright things that have hap
pened, the moments and hours and
days spent with congenial spirits, the
-spicy bits of narrative which have
marked the progress of many evenings
but why mention all these things
now?
"I am drifting on to the closing hours
and I guess after all the old man's
chief delight is In memories of things
and happenings of the earlier times.
Coming back to the scar on my hand,
I paid rather dearly for it. It is a
pity that I cannot weave around this
experience a bit of romance which
would heighten the color of the yarn
and give brilliance to the lines. But
this is simply a gambler's story and,
while not exactly prosaic, It does not
take on any of that prettier coloring
such as cine finds, for instance. In Co
nan Doyle's story about how the major
lost one of his ears. He gave up his
ear to save a woman. I got the scar
reaching for an ordinary stake In a
game of card, and no large stake at
that
"It war many years ago. That fe
verish Impulse to gamble was Just get
ting Into my blood. One night I fell
Into a game with a crowd of men, all
of them but one strangers to me. The
game hati not progressed far before I
became aware of the fact that was
playing against two card sharks. Lack
was my way on the last round and
my hand called for the stake. But one
ef the sharpers was bent on getting
my last penny, and he threw down a
better hand than mine and one which
I knew he had faked. A quarrel be
gan and I reached out for the stake,
covering the money with my right
hand. Am I did so one of the shapers
whipped out a long-bladed knife and
tabbed at my hand. The blade pass
ed through my hand and Into the table.
Hand, money and all were pinned to
the table, and until my friends came
to my rescue I waa In a helpless con
dition. My friend pulled the knife out
and released me. I got the stake and
the scar which you see on the back of
my hand Is only a part of the price,
and a small part at that, which I made
for it The excitement and novelty of
the experience intensified the gambling
Impulse which had fevered the blood
and tissue of my nature, and since that
time I have been a helpless and hope
less gambler, enjoying the usual' for
tunes of the man who spends his life
In this strangely fascinating world."

Ayer's Hair Vigor makes
the hair grow. This is
because it is a hair food.
It feeds the hair and the
hair grows, that's all there

Catarrh cf the Stomach is Generally
Galled Dyspepsia Something
to Produce artificial Diges
tion is Generally Taken.
Hence Pepsin, Pancreatin aniU Host
of Other Digestive Demedies
Has Been Invented.
These Remedies Do Not Reach the
Seat of Difficulty, Which
Is Really Catarrh.
Ex-U-. 8. Senator M. U. Butler from
South Carolina, was senator from ' that
state for two terms. In a recent letter
to The Peruna Medicine Co., from
Washington, D. C, says:.
"I can recommend Peruna for dys
pepsia and stomach trouble. 1 have
been using your medicine for a short
period and I feel very much relieved.
It is indeed a wonderful medicine be
sides a good tonic." M. C. Butler.
The only rational way to cure dys
pepsia is to remove the catarrh.
Peruna cures catarrh. Peruna does
not produce artificial digestion. It
cures catarrh and leaves the stomach to
perform digestion in a natural way.
This is vastly better and safer than re
Borting to artificial methods.
Peruna has cured more cases of dys
pepsia than all other remedies com
bined, simply because it cures catarrh
wherever located. If catarrh is lo
cated in the head. Peruna cures it. If
catarrh has fastened itself in the throat
or bronchial tubes, Peruna cures it.
When catarrh becomes settled in the
stomach, Peruna cures it, as well in
this location ad in any other.
Peruna is not simply a remedy for
dyspepsia. Peruna is a catarrh rem
edy. Peruna enres dyspepsia because
it is generally dependent upon catarrh.

HOLLAND CHARITABLE WORK.
Church and Private Institutions If
eel iu the Aid Granted.
A recent report of the minister of tt
interior of the Netherlands is of par
tlcular Interest, giving complete st
tistics of the amount expended In chax
ltable work in Holland, says the Bevu
Scientlflque. This matter is regulated
In Holland byhe law of June 28, 1854,
which recognizes four sorts of charit
able Institutions those which are ad
ministered by the state, the provinces
or the communes; those which belong
to a church and are for the purpose of
assisting the poor of the parish; the
Institutions founded by lay bodies or
private Individuals, and mixed institu
tions which are directed by the public
authorities, together with the church
or private individuals. In all of these
cases there Is a distinction made be
tween assistance given to those who
ask it of their own will and those who
are ashamed to ask and are sought out.
In an average year the assistance at
the homes of the indigent amounts to
a little more than 14,000,000 franca.
of which 9.000,000 is In money and the
rest in provisions, the whole being
distributed among about 185,000 poor.
In this total of expenditures the part
played by public funds is 5,000,000
francs, the rest being almost entirely
furnished by the churches, the private
Institutions distributing hardly 600,000
francs. The churches distribute more
money than the public institutions.
The poor who do not apply for as
sistance are almost exclusively cared
for either by the churches "or private
institutions, as the public officials do
not possess sufficient initiative to seek
out the sufferers. The amount distrib
uted to these "ashamed" poor repre
sents an expenditure of some 1,300,000
francs, which is divided almost equally
between the private and lay institu
tions and the churches...
The distribution of provisions and
fuel reaches the modest total of 270,000
francs distributed among 15,000 poor.
The source of most of this assistance
is the private institutions, the public
granting but little more than 13,000
francs to 500 poor. The explanation of
the relatively modest part played by
the government lies in the specification
in the law mentioned above that pub
lic assistance shall be granted only
when other agencies are inadequate.
The charitable institutions of Holland
are public, 3,400 Supported by the
number about 5,000, of which 1,900
church and 450 are private. , ,

that coffee-drinking people are very
seldom given to drunkenness. , In Brazil
for Instance, where coffee Is grown
extensively and all the inhabitants
drink It many times a day, intoxica

only noticeable among the. natives, but
the foreigner who settles there, though
possessed of ever such a passion for
strong- drink, gradually loses his lik
ing for alcohol as he . acquires the
coffee-drinking habit of the Brazilian.
