THE MM GAZETTE. TUESDAY, JT7KE 23, 1903. NOT SELFISH. Foreigners are accustomed to describe us as a people ab? orbed in money-settinc Money is our idol and a heedless rush to be come quickly rich is our chief pursuit. This is false. Our people are not pursuing the accumulation of money, of wealth with more earnestness than they give to any other pursuit. We do things promptly, earnestly, efficiently. Whatever pursuit appears to ab sorb us today we may drop to morrow to take up some otner o greater urgency. We pursue, we achieve not one thinsr but many thinei, and having: accom plished ene purpo?e we quickly take up anotner. uur araDiuon, that which engages our energies, is to do large things, to accom plish great results. No 4 'pent up Utica" confines us. We have a large country with untold possi bilities of greatness on all sides. The wide extent of our territory, the mighty grandeur of our riv ers and mountains and forests in spire us with large purposes and 3 A . 1 A. 1 ana incite us 10 earnest, micuai fled action. Withal we are practical people. We make lit tie waste of our time and ener gies in pursuing mere theories, We gather up all the practicali ties of life, all its possibilities whether great or small and hav ing grasped all we hurry them forward until the world beholds them as things achieved. Whoever accuses us of a mean mercenary spirit, of worshiping the almiehtv dollar does not un derstand us. We do not regard j wealth as an end, but as a means. Men who regard the accumula tion of wealth as the end ot human effort are few in number and without potent influence. No people expend money for all purposes requiring money, so freely, so lavishly and generous ly as our people. Let but the emergency arise, whether it ap peal to our patriotism or our humanity and every man's purse string is loosened. Had we been a money worshiping people, the unity of our government had been destroyed: Cuba would yet have groaned under Span ish misrule.. Were' we not both generous and humane none oi our ships had ever borne aid to starving Irelaad and India Wherever by sword or famine, by pestilence, fire or flood afflicted humanity has appealed to us we have given the lie to the reproach of selfish, sordid character. Nor have we always awaited appeal. We have been quick to recog nize the necessity for our aid and have sent it forth with our earn est, glad "God-speed." Cor vallis' contribution of almost seven hundred dollars, to the aid of stricken Heppner is only in keeping with the spirit and action of our whole people, and testi fies to the truth that we are not "idolaters of the almighty dol lar." (Salem Journal, June 22, i902.) Mr. A. J. Byers, of Independence, ac companied by his son, E. G. Two months ago the young man came to Dr. Darrin for treatment and today call ed at the Journal office to state that he could hear as well as anybody.
