THE WILIS GAZETTE. FRIDAY, JUNE 19, 1903. NOT BENEFICIAL. It is admitted that an excessive wage scale is of little permanent benefit to, the wageworker. The reason is that excessively high wages cause a decided advance in the price of all commodities re- quired for the maintenance of human life whatever scale of liv- j mg men may adopt. 1 ne neces- sanes of life are first to adyance. The cost of living is iucreased. ( Subsistence, or food supplies, I jn tl:iejr paimy days, they evi Clothing, rents, medical supplies Gently were too stiff in the joints all taice on an ennancea vaiue, sa that whether well or ill the wage-j worker must pay a higher price for all he consumes or requires to support his family. His ability to buy has enabled him to in dulge luxurious tastes until he now finds many things in his list of necessaries which he once re trarded as expensive luxuries. He receives more than ever be-1 fore for his labor. He can live u-.it. 1 1:.. Uitoi- cnrl I 1. 1,., r,oor Prpwti V ' 4 li UUtS UVV. A. i t.L;vu.y i uc uuu3 uic rw , what deems necessary to ae-1 cent living nas Decome su gien that he must have an increase ol 1 wages in order to live decently. He is right. Relatively he IS j now living no better than when I his waes were less. He does I not see the reasons for this; he litTiTilv VnrOT5 ir is true. He l secures advanced wages and pres ently is confronted by the same conditions. Whatever causes produce this condition there is one lying so near the surface that it is easily recognized. It is found in a hie-h wape scale. Labor is the chief item in the cost of every ! commodity. The more expen-i sive the item ot labor becomes! the higher must be the price paid for the commodity. The wage worker has received wages for his interest in a commodity. If now he would possess that com modity he must at least pay for it a sum equivalent to that paid for producing it. , Since the cost of a commodity depends mainly upon the wages paid for produc ing it, if we would cheapen the product we must do so by ex pending less for wages, that is by lowering wages, or by econ omy of production, that is by the application of machinery, steam, electricity and the elimination of all waste of material and energy. This is just what we have been doing. We have maintained a high wage scale and cheapened the price of commodities by economy of production. When we reach a point beyond which economy of production cannot go commodities can be made cheaper only by a reduction of wages. When we reach a wage scale be yond the ability of economy of production to pay it can be main tained only by increasing the price of the product. This is just the point we have now reached. High wages have di rectly contributed to the expense of living. We do not undertake to say that wages are excessive, but we would have all see that excessive wages are of no real benefit to any one. We believe the wage worker should now, in many pur suits, wait for greater economy of production to be reached be fore he demands higher wages. In the mean time all might go on guard against that individual, social and public extravagance which make prosperity a deadly enemy rather than a benignant friend. Kings Valley Picnic. The big union picnic in Kings Valley last Saturday proved to be a grand success., Notwithstand ing the threatening weather a large crowd gathered f or the day's festivities.- The stage was tastefully decorated with flags, presenting a beautiful sight. The program consisted of drills, reci tatioas, songs and dialogues, and it was pronounced the best yet rendered at any picnic in this part ot our county. The address of welcome by Prof. O. G. Marsh, of Wren school, contained excellent thoughts and sugges tions. Supt.
