THE COBVALUS GAZETTE, FRIDAY, MAY 8, 19C3- PARTY PRINCIPLES. Candidates for office placed in nomination by the several politi cal parties represent the pnuci pies and policies of their respect we parties. This is especially true of candidates for congress. They stand committed to the principles and purposes of their pdUy and pledged In sAvmq of election to do all possible, if elected, to further the policies of theit party. This is as it shoula be. It enables the Voter to cast his ballot in siippbrt of princi ples. TO all intelligent and thoughtful ejectors the personal ity of the candidate is of second dry importance. The question is not, is he bright, capable and qualified, but are his political principles the best for the coun try? Mr. Reames is a democrat. He is named bv the democratic Batty as a candidate for congress, who, if elected, may be depend ed upon to stand up in earnest support of the measures and pur poses of that party. What are these? What may they be? What the principles of the party really are is difficult to determine. It is a tact tnat tne republican party has formulated and applied its principles to our political life so acceptably, so thoroughly, so successfully and for so loxg a time that there has been 'scant room for different principles. This has forced the democratic party to become rather the party of negation and of b struction than a party having clean-cut, distinctive and great principles. The only democratic principle to which the party has consist .. catly clung through all the years is tariff-for-revetme only, so closely drawn to free trade as justly to identify it as the party of free trade. Whenever it has had the opportunity it has de stroyed protection. It has never in all our history, enacted a tariff law for the country that has not been followed by commercial and industrial disaster and wide spread suffering. This has al ways fallen with most cruel force upon our farmers, mechanics and laborers. The last democratic tariff, the "Wilson and Gorman" bill forced manufacturers to close mills and factories, enforced idle ness upon tens of thousands in dustrious workmen and carried hunger and distress to countless homes. It dissipated the surplus in -the national treasury and sent the government out into the world a borrower of money on its bonds for future payment. These are exactly the things which would again ensue were the democratic party permitted "to revise the tariff." The party "demands the pas sage of laws controlling trusts and sincere efforts to enforce them." -There is not an anti trust law on the federal statute book which was not placed there by republicans opposed by demo crats. The school boy who reads, knows a republican administra tion is sincerely and rigorously enforcing those laws, and that the most ? bitter ' opposition it meets comes from democrats, the Rockefellows, the Morgans of the democratic party. When that party held the reins of gov ernment it did not raise a finger against the trusts. The people know it cannot be trusted to con trol trusts any more than it may be to revise the tariff. We shall revert to this subject again. For the present we would say that there is not a single thing in the purposes of the democratic party to win a repub lican, vote for its congressional nominee That Delusive Speech. The 6oth anniversary of the establishment of the provisional government of Oregon was cele brated at Champoeg, last Satur day, and a delieious comedy of errors, has developed in connec tion with that occasion. Mr. A. K. Reames, democratic candidate for congress from this district, was on the program for an ad dress, but was prevented by de layed trains from reaching Cham poeg to fill his engagements This did not deter the Portland Journal from giving a graphic ac count of the -enthusiastic recep tion accorded Mr. Reames speech. The Journal said in part: "The appearance of Mr. Reames on the stand was a signal for an out burst of applause," This was a pretty fair stretch of the imagina tion, for " Mr. Reames was ioo ailes away when tins incident was supposed to have occurred. Advance copies of Mr, Reames' address were sent out by Chair man White of the democratic congressional committee. The Gazette received a copy. Now comes the Clackamas County Record with an account ot the exercises at Cbampoeg:, contain ing the speech delivered by I Ion. Frauk Davey. The Davey ad dress in the Record arid the Reames address sent out by Chairman White are one and the Mwe, -??i!tulttt K'otiM l uWSioy trivu thai (K undor.lgl.id tA- mlnl.lrator of the .state ot William K.
