THE CQRMLIS MTTL TUESDAY, OCT- 21, 1902. Now in. Operation. For the past few weeks Cal Thompson and brother, Alb.rt E. Thompson, have been q-rte busy fitting up their steam laun dry. ... Last week steam was turn ed loose and everything about the place was found to work sat isfactorily. As is the case in everv new enterprise, -it was as certained after work began in earnest that "this and 'toiher" little thing required adjustment, etc., to make everything run smoothly and do satisfactory work, but all of these little an noyances are now past The plant is most up-to-date in every particular. It is equip ped with a 12-horie power boiler and an 8-horse power engine. The washing tub, or vat, resem b'es a power churn for butter making" to a degree and is driven by steam. When in use it re volves first one way and then the other, automatically.. White cloths are put through" quite a series of soap suds before being finally rinsed out Laundry of this description is put through nine different waters. Colored laundry goes through about half a3 many waters. From one to two hours is required to wash a batch of laundrv. What is called a eris in use. . The "tub" starch- is a peculiar little contrivance; the inner part of it is perforated and it is set in revolution by steam. The revolving portion makes 1,500 revolutions per minute and in this manner all ot the moisture is thrown from the clothing. From five to ten min utes is required for this work. The next thing to consider is the dry room. Here are various sections of racks that run back and forth into the room after the plan of folding doors. About two hours in the dry room is suf ficient to drv the laundry. Then comes the ironing and polishing. The ironing is done by hand while the polishing is accomp lished by a machine for that pur pose. The polisher is heated in some manuer by gas generated from gasoline. It does its work splendidly. At present the Thompson brothers have two assistants help ing them at the laundry. Sam pies of the work they are doing is most creditable and nobody could be displeased with it. The proprietors have used their own money to start this enterprise they asked no bonus of anyone and our people should patro nize them in every way possible and assist in making the venture a success. The Delinquent List. The tax list of delinquent property that is shortly to be ad vertised by Sheriff Burnett will, it is thought, be the lightest that was ever published in this coun ty. The delinquency is approxi mately $500, as the matter stands at present. Almost all of this is on property that tliecoua tv has bid in at former sheriff sales. The law provides that the list shall be published in time for proper notice to be given that the sale of property may oc cur before March 1st, of each year. Between Febuary 17th, and March 15th, 1902, in the neigh borhood of $55,000 in taxes were paid to the sheriff. Those who paid their taxes before March 15 were allowed a rebate, and on the tax money paid in before that date the rebate amounted to nearly $1,600. There are al ways some people who are be hind in matters of every charac ter, and in this case alter the 1st of October they were obliged to pay a psnalty and interest But few were behind in this matter, however, as will be seen when it is known that the interest and penalties that were added amount ed to about $150. Thursday, Sheriff .Burnett turned the tax rolls over to the clerk.? who is obliged to return them to the sheriff at the expir ation of ten days. It is thought that Benton county will have the lightest delinquent list this vear of any county in the state. Practical Knowledge. Evidence of the practical ben efit to be derived from a course at Jthe Oregon Agricultural Col lege, is constantly to be found. The student who graduates from that institution is not burdened with a lot of theories, which he has to unlearn before he can take his place in the practical world of affairs, but he is equipped with jast that kind of knowledge which he would gain from actual experience. A letter just received from Kirby MacLean, who is now at Westville, California,, substanti ates what we have iust said. Kirby graduated with the class ' of'2froraO. A. and Jeftj early in the summer for Califor-! nia. He is now head engineer ; in one of the mines for the Ala-. uieda Gold Mining Co., having j been able to secure ' this position over men 01 more experience De cause of his knowledge of the construction of his machine. His letter contains this testi monial to the efficiency of the mechanical department pf the college. "Professor Hayward's course in machine design, and Professor CovelPs Steam En gines and Boilers gave me a good base to build on." Council Notes. At its regular meeting Monday evening, Oct. 13th, the council transacted the following business: In the matter of a sewer through block 33, the sewer committee made no recommen dation, and the matter was referr ed back to the committee. A favorable report was made in regard to the petition for a sewer through block 18, old town, and block 2, county addi tion, The report of the chief of po lice was read and filed. Petition of Jacob Whitaker and others in regard to parties mak ing connection , with sewer through block 5, county addition, and block 19, Dixon's addition, was referred to the sewer com mittee. An ordinance, granting G. R. Farra a franchise for a water sys tem in Corvallis, passed its sec ond reading and was referred to the special committee on water works. The reports of the viewers ap pointed to assess the cost of the various sewers, were read and adopted. The question of a shed being constructed on the west side of block 5, as to violation of the fire ordinance, was referred to the street committee. fhe First National Bask OF CORVALLIS, OREGON.
