THE C0RVALL1S GAZETTE. FRIDAY, OCI. 17, 1902. Submit New Proposition. As stated in our last issur locai water company submitted a new proposition, tor "suppKing the city with water, to the coun cil at the meeting Monday mhr. Mr. Smyth, representing Port land capital, was not present nor was an amended 'ordinance offered by these people. The oidinance submitted by Mr. Farra provides that the privi lege be granted his company, for and during 40 years -(subject to the right of purchase by the city at the expiration of ten years afW the trrantiner of the fran chise and every five years there after) to operate a system ol water woiks in this city. The system ot water works shall consist of what is known as direct and Teservoir pressure. The water to be supplied shall be taken from a running stream -of pure mountain water, from Rock or Woods creeks, or both, at a point above all sawmills or other objectionable influences. Under ground pipes shall be used to convey the water to Corvallis. Sufficient pipes of suitable size shall be laid to supply water to reach all actual consumers, and such necessary mains to supply all hydrants now located by the city and hereafter to be put in by the water company. Mains are to be put not lets than four inches in size, and sufficient to at all times throw from any hv drant, through fifty feet of hose and a 1 A inch nozzel, a stream of water to a heieht not less than seventy feet. The city is to pay the water comDanv &6z per month for all fire hydrants (27 in number), sewer flushing, street sprinkling, filling of cisterns, and for use in and about Citp Hall. The following rates to con sumers of water, or such other rates as may be established by the water company and approved bv the council, are to be charged: For fatnilv usk for dwelling and family per month, 75 cents. For one bath tub in residence, 25 cents. For one water closet in resi dence per month, 50 cents Or, when desired, a charge of 4i.;o per month for residence with ten persons or less. The water company shall make such rules and regulations coverninsr the service of water to private consumers, as mav be proper and expedient, and en force their observance after ap proval by the city. The water company is to file its acceptance, if it sees fit to do so, of the terms and conditions of this ordinance with the police judge within go days from its passage. Work of furnishing the water supply, provided in this ordin ance, shall commence within six months after its acceptance, and shall be completed within 18 months therefrom. A bond of $5,000 is to be giv en by the water company, for full and faithful performance. Long Trip on $40. Not long ago B. B. Barker, a nepnew 01 Mrs. tu. Alien 01 mis city, visited Corvallis. He is now practicing law in Chicago, and from what he has accom plished it is but reasonable to conclude that he will be a suc cess. After his course at Wil lamette University he went to Harvard. He and his chum, W. J. Shepard. concluded that they would like to spend one of their vacations in England and Scot land, and although they had but $40 each, they realized their de sire. They hired out as stock tenders on a cattle ship and got their transportation both ways and $10 cash, each, for their ser vices. They were iu England and Scotland forty-two days and covered about 1,200 miles on their bicycles. Quite a write-up of the young men and their trip appeared iu the Oregonian a few days ago, of which the following is an extract: That new two Salem young men at Harvard crossed the ocean, toured England and Scot land and returned with the ex penditure of onlv $40 each, shows what an Americ iu boy can do in the way of traval if he will exer cise Yankee ingenuity and econ omy. These two young men, U. B. Barker and W. J. Shepard, were for a number of years stu dents at Willamette University, and are well known to a large body of the college boys of Ore gon. As a supplement to their r r t- 11 r j 1 T extensive studies in history, liter ature and economics, they de sired to spend their vf ctioa in the land in which English his tory was made and the best of English literature was written. But they were both young men j.e!who had no.foitnnes at their coinir.atid, so wtre compsrlleii to devise means of traveling at much less than the usual ct. With true Western spirit they ; decided that "roughing it"; would enable them Jo gz. thej most out of their limited supply j of money at the end of a school : vear. and they beaan their trav- ! els on that plan. The New Industry. Notwithstanding the fact that this fall was a very dry one, nec essarily making feed for milch cows a little short, business at the Corvallis Creamery is unusu - lly good. On an average there j is aoouc 550 pounas 01 miner made per day. About the same ; cmantitv is made at the branch i creamerv at Ilalser. W. H. Kauoisch is at Halsey the great er part cf the time. His father says that he spends seven days of the week at Halsey and two days in Corvallis. It is almost sur prising the way cur farmers and dairymen have supported the Corvallis Creamery. It shows that this industry is beneficial for dairy-men and creamery alike. Many tons of butter have been shipped from this city during the past year and thousands ol dol lars have been brought to Cor vallis iu this-way. It is "not saying too much to state that every man who has en gaged in dairying, and given it care and . attention, using the same judgment that would be required to make a success of any other business, has succeeded in securing for himself a good liv ing and in many instances has been able to lay aside some money. In all probability as time goes by a far greater num ber will engage in this industry. Not many years ago an ' 'old timer" would have informed a person that this was not an ideal dairy country, and among other things, would have stated that clover would not do well here. These ideas have both been ex ploded. The country is as good a dairy region as can be found in almost any state, and clover that is grown in Benton county is as good as that produced in any section. Great results are ex pected of the dairying industry in Benton county. Revetment Completed. During the past summer the work of putting in a revetment 011 the Willamette river a mile or two above this citv was under taken. Engineer Ogden made a trip or two to Corvallis about the time the work was started, but later on the construction ot the revetment was placed in charge of Engineer M. E. Dunn. Mr. Dunn and his men completed the work Wednesday, and yesterday Mr. Dunn took his departure for Oswego. The latter has proved himself a capable man at. his business and a courteous gentl man as well. During his short soiourn in this citv he made many friends. The revetment work cost the government about $3, 200. There were 650 yards of rock and 900 cords of fascines used in the con struction of this work. At one time there were thirty-five men employed this was in Septem ber. Those who are competent to i ridge work of this character declare that everything about the revetment has been most sub stantially done. In connection with this matter, it may be fit ting to state that it is reported the Mathloma, the government snag boat, will do considerable work on the Upper Willamette during the coming winter.
