More Abaut That Petition.
Corvallie, Or., June 28, r9t)2.
Editor Gazette:
la record to the petition of the Coast
,aud & Livestock Co. for reduction of its
ixe, from $455i.i8 to $450 or about nine
nths of the amount due, as shown in
,H3 letter in last week's Gazette, I
totice from the petition of M. M. Davis,
mat. for that company, that to make a
Attlftment of Ithe whole matter, and to
avoid litigation, the company ia willing
fto pay $t50 settlement of these back
taxes amounting to ver ten times tnat
much.
I hv b3n wenderinjj if that would
h a orettr Kood investment for all class
es of taxpayers to make about once a
year. Or once in six years, ty letting
their taxee for that time go delinquent.
Bat how would the county come on.'
How would it pay its state tax? The
county has alrea ly paid the btate on this
prop3rty two or tnree or more umo wc
amount Ithis company oilers to pay. me
county now, toget out of this honest debt.
Suprosa the county does make the com-
nnv a ctft of something like M.uuu be
cause they ask it, and then makes a sim
ilar gift to other people asking the same
kind of relief, how long would it be until
the county would be hopelessly bank
rupt? Mr. D-via may ssy that they have
paid $S22.8i on this tax. Then how did
he get his house? That payment on ac
count of i89u taxes, which he paid indi
vidually, as stated in his petition, was
the bid he made at sheriff's tax sale, on
Dec. 23, 1S97. And it is what according
to the county records, and other infor
mation, he paid fr nis residence proper
ty here in Corrallis. If that money ia to
he naid back to Mr. Dav'i9, by the county
according to the claim he hinta at in his
petition, then who gets the house? Mr.
Davis may eay, he traded the depot prop
erty to the A6toria Compauy for the
house and two lots, but if he makes that
argument, then where did he et the
depot property? The same identical
$S2i.Si j aid f ir the tax certificate which
he got at the tax s.ile, and included both
the residence property and the depot
property. It looks very much as it the
Astoria Company, whose president is al
so president of the railroad which has
this depot proj orty, ha j been furnished
with an opportunity to make that kind
of an exchange and avoid litigation.
In bho.-t. the hint of litigation, the hint
of a claim which Mr. Davis hints at in
his petition to the county court, looks
very Jmuch like well, something one
does not like to mention.
The petition goes on to eay, we have
DO expectation of collecting the above
amount (taxes, asked to be released, 9-i0
of their honest tsx debt, or something
like that), or any part thereof from Mas
fen, receiver, or Coe, trustee. Now I
HE CORMLIS GHETTL
this plain question. Hare they not
and
already received this tax? Was it not a
of the price they paid the receiver

It is peifectly right and proper, that
