M nilS GfiETTt TUESDAY, JOE 17, 1902 WHERE IS THE ECONOMY? The plea .urged for the hold ing of a special session just bt for.- the regular session of the legist tare next spring is that the i.ew officers will immediately te placed on flat salaries, and Cue iaitiative and referendum amend ment will be'in effect when the new legislature convenes. Eut the expense of a special session will amount to $12,000 or $15, 000, besides the milage to which members will be entitled. The new legislature can make the initative and, referendum just as effecthe as could their predeces sors. Flat sa'arieF, as advocated cur ing the recent campaign, means larger salaries so far as taxpay ers are concerned. The consti tution now provides for a flat salary of $1,500 per annum for the governor. The flat salary m contemplation for that officer is probably $5,000. The present salary of the secre tary of state is $1,500. To be sure, that officer receives far more than this sum each year, but this extra amount dees not come out of the state treasury. It is paid by private parties and corporations in the shape of fees. A "flat salary" for the secretary of state will mean a laigtr con tribution from the state treasury, for that officer is entitled to more than $1,500 per year for ins ser vices. The stale printer is on the fee svstem. and is paid in proportion to work done. His caisrv InnVs larpe on raper, but he oavs his employes union wsg m. and this item of wages makes a hole in what he draws from the It may be that the state gov ernment can be more economical i,r monoopd hut we fail to see any economy in tne proposed Hofer-Geer-Chambcrlain speci session. So far we have heard of but three persons who favor the idea of holding a special session of the legislature next spring Col. Ji Hofer. the promotor; T. T. Geer, the rovernor. and (Sto. E. Cham berlain, the governor-elect. Col. Hofer. as usual, is" after notorie- tv: the Governor is after the Unitecl States senatorship, and the Governor-Elect is after a flat salary of $5,000. HOMER'S ILIAD. Book II A Literal Translation by C. MacLean, Pit. D. Vv. 840 877 The allies of the Trojans Hippothous led the tribe of the spear- wielding Pelasgians, those who inhabited fertile (lit. deep soiled) Larisa: these commanded Hippothous and Pylaeus, a scion of Ares, two sons of Pelasgian Let- lius son of Teutanaus. But the Thracians commanded Akamas and the warrior Peirous, as many as the swift flowing Hellespont enclosed. EuDhemes was commander of the spear fighting Kikones, son of the Zeus nourished Troezeuus son of Keas. On the other hand, Pyraechtnes led the Paeonians of the curved bow far away from Amydon, from the w ide flow ier Axius. whose water (is) the most beautiful (that) diffuses itself over the earth. But the shaggy heart of Tylaemenes led the Papblajronians from the Enetl, whence the race of wild mules, those who inhabited Kytoius and dwelt in the maeuilicent abodes on both sides of the river Parthenius, and Krornna and Aegialas and the Erythinian heights. Again, the Halizonians Odias and Ep iatroDhus commanded far away from Alybe, where is the home of silver. And the Mysians Chromis and Enno- mus the soothsayer commanded. But he did not ward off sable death by his skill in augury, for he was overcome by the hands of the swift footed son of Aea- cua (i. e. Achilles. He was grandson of Aeacus.) at the river, where he utterly laid waste the Trojans and others. Again Phorcys aud the divine Askani us commanded the Phrygians far from Askania; and tWey were eager to engnge in the conflict. And Mesthles and Antiphus, two sons ef Telemoneus, whom the (Nymph of the) Gygaean lake bore, commanded the Uoeoniane. Alsa these commanded the Moeonians, who were born beneath Timolus. Again Nastes commanded the rough voiced Karians, who inhabited Miletus and the leafy mountains of the Pthiri and the streams of Moeander and the lofty heights of Mycale. These indeed Ampbimochus and Nastes commanded, Nastes and Amphimachus, illustrious sons of Nomiou, who, foolish man, went to t attle with golden ornaments like a vain girl, and this did not at all ward otf from him a miserable death, for he was overcome by the hands of the swift-footed eon of Aeacus at the river, and the vali ent Achilles cared for the gold. And Sarpedon and the honorable Glau cus far away from Lycia, from eddying Xanthns, commanded the Lycians. Note: Sarpedon was the lira vest lead Sir of the Allies, anil by the Trcjans was resarded as "tbe prop of the city." He ; was slain bv Fatroclus. At the com mand of Zeus, Apollo bathed his corpse anointed it with embiosia and gave it to the twin brothers Sleep and Death to be conveyed to Lycia. Glaucus was first cousin of Sarpedon and grandson ol Ee"t roplion. Ha was wounded by Ten cer.
