r i I J THE COBVALUS GAZETTE. TUESDAY, JUNE 3, 1902. DIVIDED VHE OFFICES. Much difficulty is exLen'tnced in securing complete ietimis from outside precincts in tins county. Majorities fn offices wheie the contest was hotiy waged weie re ceived quite early and by ten o'clock this morning it wss known that Mo.es had been elected clerk over Wilson by 21 votes, and Watters had defeated Woodson for judge by 34 votes. With Al.-ea to hear f oin Watlers wi.s but two ahead, but that pre cinct gave Watlers 32 majority. Mr. Woodson's great popular ity in Corval'is where he is kiiown is attested bv the fact tat he anieJ this c.ty by 79 votes, turning ahead of h'.s tick et. The race that he made in the county greatly surprised his opponent-:. Sheriff Burnett has the largest majority of any dem ocratic candidate. The republicans have elected senator, representative, commis sioner, reccrder, constable and coroner; the democrats have judge, clerk, sheriff, assessor, treasurer, surveyor, and justice of the J eace. Congressman Tongue has run ahead of his ticket iu this county and district, while Furniih will carry the county by a small majority. ALL BUT GOVERNOR. The count throughout the state is exceptionally slow, but latest returns indicate majorities of fiom 8,ooo to 10,000 for the entire re publican stale ticket, with the exception of governor. While the result on this office is still in doubt, the indications are favora ble for the election of Chamber lain by a small majority. Williamson republican, for congress in the second district, and Tongue, republican, in the first district are elected to con cress. The result as a whole is felici tous for republican', but the real contest was on governor and to this extent the result wid be re garded as a democratic victory outside of this state. HOMER'S ILIAD. B9k 1I-A Literal Translation by C. MacLcan, lh. D. Vv. 78C-377. The forces of the Tro jans : But Iiis swift footed as the wind came quickly a messenger to the Trojans from Zaus the Aegis-bearer with a sad mes sage; and they, all together, both young aad old, were holding an assemblj- at the gates of Priam. And Iris swift; as to her feet standing near (the assembly)! addressed it ; and as to her voice she re-1 enabled Polites the son of Priam, who, as a py sat, trusting to th( sw iftness of his feet, on the very top of the mound of the aged Aesyetes, watching when the A':haeans might set out with their 6hips. Hying impersonated him (i. e. Polites) Iris swift as to her feet addressed him (:. e. Priam) : OId man, always to theejinjudicious words are dear, as formerly in tim s of psace: but a mighty war rushes on. In died already very frequently have I en-te.-ed into (i, e. been present at) the con flicts of warriors, but never yet have I ssea such and so many people: for trulv (in number) like leaves or san 1 they came over the plain to fight against the city (See tien. 32:17). "O Hector, thee e8pre"ally do I command thus to do. For ma-sy allies are at the great city of Priam, and one language .is to one and another to another ef these widely-dis-perse 1 tuen (t. r. the language of these widely dispersed men is different): Let eich hero (i. e. commander) give orders to these, whomsoever he commands, and hiving n.a'shafied (his own fellow) citi zens, let liitn lead these out (from the city to the field of battle)." Thus she spoke, and Hector did not fail to recog nize the speech of a coddess, and he straightway broke up the assembly; and they rushed for their arms (i. e. to fetch t lOdi). Tlie whole gate opjned (i. e. Scaran gates, lending fiom li e city to the plain), and Ihe people rushed forth ; and great (was) the din (which) arose. And in front of the city was a steep hill, o the plain away from (the city), acces sible on all sides, which i tubed men na'tie li.ititira, but the immortals the tomb of Myrina agile (in battle). Here then were the Troja-is and their allies a-raved into divisions. Urges Road Meeting. Lorstkr, Ouko.on, May 15, 1902. Editor Gazette: There has been much said in regard to the improvement of our roads, and ad vising our fanners how to do the work. I want to ask a question and say a word regarding the matter. First, I want to know who the roads belong to. One writer says they belong to the farmer, j If so, ho does the court house and; other public buildings lelong to? I lite to hear and read people's opia ioQB about public or business affairs that we are all interested in, even though it is not riht to the point. Such talks or writing often causes people to gettheright conclusion. But T do not like to hear a man or men trying to raddle their duty off on some one else, or not have it done at all. Su-;h man are no doubt Btrong believers in woman's suffrage. When people start in business, in or der to be successful, everything must be put in order. We can not do business at all without roads anv more than we con! 1 keep ths records of the county or do tli3 business without a court house. I want to say tyou, my dear friends, that you had belter call a road meeting, allow a certain number to be present from each toad district in the county, and adopt some plan.
