THE GAZETTE. FRIDAY, APRIL 18, 1902 REPUBLICAN TICKET. Senator J. D. DALY, Corvallis. Representative MARION HAYDEN. of Alsea. County Judge C. E. WOOD SON, of Corvallis. iH ps. Clerk J. O. WILSON, Corvallis. Sherifl VM. Corvallis. Recorder T. Kings Valley. Assessor T. Fairmount. Treasurer T. KNOTTS, cf r. VINCENT, J. RISLEY, H. WELL- SHER, of CorvalHs. Commi.'-i-ioner VV Philomath. Surveyor GEO. GONER, Dusty. Coronor S. N. . A. JOLLY H. WAG WILKINS, of Corvallis. Justice of the Peace HAR OLD STl'ONG, of Corvallis. Constable O. J. TREESE, of Corvallis. SUCCESS THE MEASURE. We form our estimate of men not bv the number of years they have lived, not by what they pro claim of themselves, but by what they have done, or honestly at tempted to do. Success is the great touch stone cf individual character; not that all who de serve success achieve it, but be cause none achieve without de serving it. By the same rule we shall form our estimate of parties. If we eliminate men and platforms things right in their own proper relations and carefully consider the value of what parties have ac complished we find no difficulty in making an intelligent choice as between them. This divests politics of all of fensive personalities, prevents displays of mere partisan rancor and enable men to reason dispas sionately, logically and correctly. The republican party invokes the aoolication of this rule to it self and would apply it to the op position. What of value has the republican party achieved? What has been ttie irmtage ot its prin ciples, policies, measures and ad ministration? Away back at its birth it opposed the exfention of human slaverv. For more than a generation slaverv has been ex tinct and our entire population rejoices it is so. It resolved the American Union should be preserved. The air is vet vibrating to the shouts with which South Carolina wel corned, her president the presi dent of seventv million freemen living under one government vering one flag. re It declared for protection to American industries and labor. Prosperity followed, and we have become a great industrial giant supplying our own demands and offering the world our rapidly growing surplus. Tens of thous and toilers on farm, at forge and loom rejoice because of this poli cy and are proud to be known as republicans. It determined there is in truth but one standard for measure of value, adopted that, and declared every dollar of our currency should conform to that standard so that its purchasing power should equal that of any other and all equal the highest stand ard. The American dollar is a dollar of stable value; the credit of the government never stood so high and financial confidence never was so positive as now. It accepts the unselfish, self sacrificing duties and responsibil ities cast upon us by an over ruling Providence through the exigencies of war and our flag floats over far off islands to whose millions we are giving Saxon law and order and fitting for the du ties of self government. Wherever republican '.princi plcs have been followed and poli cies administered prosperity, hap piness and healthful develop ment have testified to their wis dom and beneficience. Our peo ple are satisfied. The whole his tory of the republican party is re splendent with success. In this historical light the present poli cies and measures of the party will be crowned by scccess success because wisely sought and rightly deserved. If this can be asserted of the opposition history must be rewritten. EXPENSIVE BACON. Last session of congress Bacon of Georgia asked the Secretary of War to furnish a lit of at tides purchased by the military depart ment of Cuba. The secretary de clined to do so because of the vast labor and heavy expense such an undertaking would in volve. Bacon persisted, and, ap pealing to the senate when it was in an amiable mood had that r i bedv pass a resolution calling tor ol f .-. 1 . , . c t. i,.,-. .. ,-71 MCr nT Ilf'Il I 1111 ll.L- UtXllVU V J' This list now appears in six large volumes the compilation of which cost the government the r- I i 1 - nug sum oi $40,000. il the cost of every broom, bottle inl- ;tirlr nf sealing wax and bushel ot oats purchased. Its value to the country is about 40 cents. No senator or congress man has time, inclination or ne- cessity to examine trie aeians embraced in this publication. It is of n practical value to any lone. It shows this, however, that mere partisanship is an ex pensive thing, because it is blind, biased and reckless. Mr. Ba con's evident purpose was to ob tain something he might use to embarass the administration in its conduct of Cuban affairs, and . . . a I of course in his view the ena iustified the means whatever the labor and exoense. In both na tional and state politics it is just such little partisans as he who ring all the changes on ''econe my" and make the wildest charges of "inefficiency and ex travagance. ' ' This incident furnishes an apt illustration of what silly things are permitted Dy an muuigtm majority when "senatorial cour- tesv" is skilltnllv mvoKeu. n J . '. . -, r also emphasizes the necessity 01 infusing the senate with uesn blood bv selecting senators who have some practical knowledge of business methods. When we choose senators by di- rert vote of the people we shall be able to meet this necessity; not otherwise. Mass Convention.
