tf ; THE 'CQBVAU1S - GAZETTE FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 13,1901. GOOZ) WILL FOLLOW. Through pain," and-toil, and held in Portland in 1905. Trie Btrife, and bloodshed, and death, Statesman has the following oil nations, as well as individuals, this subject: -advance from lower to higher j Members of the Legislature, levels of thought, action and life, . Wa are justified in believing that nothing is wholly evil; tnat out of every disaster we ultimately giln victftries and achieve tri umphs which otherwise we had never compassed. Out of the desperate attempt to assassinate President McKinley t'lere will spring so much of good ai shall largely compensate for his personal suffering, and for the shock, grief, and solicitude it brought, not only to his per sonal fiijadj, but to the ,Ameri c m people and the people of the civilized wrorld. Our people realize today, more f illy and clearly than ever be fore, the superior excellence of the man whom they have twice c'aosen 10 be their chief magis trate. The perfection of his character shines with greater lus tre, and is seen and recognized by greater numbsrs Qf men than ever heretofore. Party strife atid rancor have been thrust aside and all have been permitted to see the calm,' courageous, earnest mtu, the broad-minded, clear-sighted statesman and patriotio Ameri can President McKinley. Other' rulers and nations have done more than extend mere sympa thy, than testify to the exalted character of the man and magis trate: they have frankly admitted that the great principles and pol icies of which he has for years been the most able exponent have made us a nation and placed us in the fore-front of the nations. Democracy as exemplified by us and pursaing the policies of the great party in power under the lead of President McKinley is making not only for the wel fare of the American people, but for that of all mankind. We have solved problems, we are now solving problems involving the. best welfare of humanity which no other government, and no other people are able to solve Never before have the nations so clearly comprehended this and so earnestly bidden us God speed upon our mission. . Over" the couch whereon lay our sorely stricken, ' possibly dy. intr,, executive, the nations clasped hands with us and min sled with their generoas sympa thy their profound admiration of our people and our government. Frm tow onward the nations will be in closer fellowship, law, order, liberty, human weal, will . "have more careful culture and produce more generous fruits. We may now expect concerted international measures for the repression of anarchism. It must ' ba so. Yet, so far as the Amerl can people may act, it will be done, through wise laws, calmly enforced, and supported by right public sentiment. We shall ac complish this without endanger ing the rights of free speech wnnout any surrender ot our rights as individuals to -criticize our public policies and our .pub lic officials. We will stamp an- archy out of existence, but we will be careful to preserve a free press and free speech. Wa will render this freedom more power fal than ever since since it will be less frequently abused. We must not settle back into our former condition of apathy and good-natured indulgence. We must promptly reprobate tht least encouragement to lawless ness and frown npon every abase of out privileges and rights as American citizens. Let us inlel. ligently under stand what Ameri. can citizenship comprehends, and then let us earnestly and fearless. ly be American citizens, and firm ly insist that others shall be such. Popular sentiment, -the Rev. S. 0. Lapham to the contrary not withstanding, a right and right eous public sentiment is the only sure, safe and efficient instrument for the government of democ racies. - It is this that enacts just laws; it is this tliat enforces - law and carries individuals and whole communities np to. higher lanes of life. The magistrate of Aberdeen, Wash., who fearlessly invoked the law and justly - pun ished the utterance of unlawful purposes, gave a . demonstration of what popular sentiment must insist npon. If we do these, things, good, universal good, will come to us Out of the pain, sorrow, suffering nd shame that have overshad owed us for the last week. Try this Office for Job Work. Extra Session Talk.- Thcra Is some taTkoFari "extra session of the Oregon Legislature in hop tliat the state may ap- T rVT" residing in this city.' and in fact! all members of the Oregon Legis lature, have received a copy of a circular letter, from 'Edward j-: Everett Young, of Baker City, j editer of the Republican of that , city, aud one of the Oregon Com missioners fot the Lewis & Clark Exposition. - Mr. Young refers n his letter to a article written by fiisn and pnblished in the Pertland Telegram recently, 1a which he advocates the appropri ation f one million dollars by tao state of Oregon; the Same amsufit froul eaah of the states of Washington aad California, and frem tha ity of Portland, and a millien frem toe other North western states. This $5, 000,000 would be required it secure an equal amount frem the Congress f the Unitd States, with an other $5,000,000 to be secared frdm Other states ana cities.
