THE COMMUS GAZETTE, FRIDAY, MAROH 8, 1901. SECRET OF MORMON SUCCESS. The Northwestern Christian Advocate, a Methodist paper of Chicago, sas: "During 1899 the CongregationalisU, Presby terians, and Methodists gained 49,300, while the Mormon church with a population about one fifteenth os large, gained 63,900, or about 13,000 more than all f them put together. This can only be accounted for fey the taci mat .key Have irem-1,700 to 2,000 missionaries going all over the country, visiting from house 16 house and making cos verts." The Advance, a Congregation al paper f Chicago, says: ''Ao- cordiag ta the statistics of relig ious bodies in the United States the Mormons hare increased during the cast tea years from 144,352 to 300,000: more, than doable daring the dtdade. For more than a generation Mormon ism has been discredited in the estimation of the more enlight ened minds by the gross mater ialism of its dectrines; by its an. tagonism to the principles of dirnoeracy; by its strong intol erance which would play the part of 'boxer' with all other forms of religion, if it had the power; by its serpent-fcongned - mode ot proselyting, which with holds knowledge of its 'peculiar' doctrines until tn vietims are fully la its power; and by its long and continued effort to make lust the chief virtue. Its great increase is mainly because of the zeal of its missionaries and members. At present one Mormon otlt of every one-hundred and twenty-five, including children, are out doing mision ary work in behalf of-the system, aout 2,000 in all, of whom the majority are in this 'country, The system controls the vote of Utah, and holds the balance ef power in nest f the surround ing states and territories." . William E. Smythe, in Har par's Weekly, says: "For a full kalf-centnry public sentiment has waged was on the Mormon church. Its latest achievement, accomplished fey a popular up rising of American women, with the practically unanimous sup port f organized religion throughout the country, was to banish Brigham H. Roberts from the halls ef congress. Its next effort, according to a prominent Congregational newspaper, will be to attempt the conversion of the Mormon hosts by the careful distribution of traots among their hemes in Utah. In opposi tion to these lines of work the New England newspapers report great activity among tha Mor mon missionaries in the old state of Maine. It is said that they are speaking to large audiences, and meeting with saccess in forming local societies with a View to building churches, and that their success is so great that Ihey nave sent fer more mission aries to assist in their prosperous labors. During tie past few months the Sormon authorities fit Salt Lake have concluded ne gotiations for the purchase of large tracts of land watered by the irrigation enterprise in Big Hern country of Wyoming. ' It is announced that they will send thirty thousand settlers into that district during the present season which will witness the beginning of their colonization ' there. "The Mermen church is grow ing faster today than ever before In it9 history. It is bailding more churches, planting more settlements, maintaining . more missionaries all over the earth The general public appears to know nothing of it only polyga my. And polygamy is enly the ornamental buckle on its shoe. Behind that is the sturdy body and enterprising brain of a great materialism-, which possesses at- tractions far more patent than a plurality of wives. Whatever mysteries may be embalmed within, the exclusive walls of Mormon temples, there is noth ing secret about their method of gaining oonverts and making these converts contented. "The Mormon policy is colan izafion. Its method is oo-epera lion. Fifty years of - expanding prosperity have shown that this is a winning combination. There is no reason to suppose that it will a peal less effectively in the future than in the past. On 1 the contrary, present economic tendencies more urgently favor emigration and co-operative in dustry than those of twenty.five or fifty years ago. Where the missionaries of other churches speak chiefly of security in the lie to come, Mormon mission aries add their prescription for security here and now. . The missionary who holds oat the hope of "three square meals a day" in this world has a striking advantage over his rival who only deals in the hopes of futur ity. The great social and eco nomic facts which alono give the Mormon religion a habitation and a name and enable it to sur vive the assaults ot congresses. presidents and all of the chnrches of the land, have been over looked and not understood. The truth is that the Mormon church is a great plan of cs-operative settlement, to which thousands of people have fled as a rock of refuge. . Those who ask that church for bread do not get a stone. They get an irrigated farm. They get the shrewd but kindly assistance of able meu in making their way from servitude to self-employment and landed proprietorship. All the church asks in retnru is obedience." Dairying in Oregon. In a bulletin recently issued by Prof. F. I,. Kent, of O A C, the following statements are made relating to dairying in this state: While the cheese factories' and creameries in Eastern Oregon are yet very few in number, this sec tion of the state is believed to have great possibilities as a dairy region, especially in the northern portion. Indeed, parties familiar with dairying in Southern jlin nespta are of the opinion that this section of Oregon will eventually rival equal portions of Southern Minnesota and Northern Iowa in the quantity and quality of its dairy products. In the fall of 1890 the most up-to-date cream ery in the state was established at the town of Milton. - A person familiar with- the topography of a mountainous re gion would scarcely realize the amount of territory covered bv the foothills of a mountain chain like the Coast Range. It is safe to say that a strip of country averaging 30 miles in width and extending clear across the state from north to south is occu pied by this range of mountains and its foothills. On the western side f the Coast Range these hills are usually covered either with a dense growth timber, gen erally fir, - or with a luxuriant growth of fern. And it is re ported that where the fern has been killed and cultivated, and grasses such as clovers introduced, tney nave made their way clear to the summit of these hills, and prediction has been made that in the future this region may not be unlike picturesque and practical Switzerland from a dairy stand point. - -.. Because they never give !salis- faction, beiag constructed ot the cheap est material hastily thrown together. To secure the Tales of your money there is one certain way.
