CHRISTMAS does not mean much without home. v TUESDAY DKCEMBElt, IS, 1900. AUTHORITIES DIFFER. Congress cannot afford to pass the ship subsidy bill, but it) will probably do it. The result will be an effactive and powerful agent in promoting the reorgan ization and revi tfification of the democratic party. Corvallis Times, December 15, 1900. Talk about reorganization of the democratic party seems to be idle. The democratic party is already organized. Hence, talk about reorganization, With its natural suggestion of oallapse and impotency, is nonsense. Oorvallis Times, November 14, 1900. The Gazette took occasion a short time ago to tread on the toes of certain editors in this state who are in the habit of be iag rash with opinions upon matters they know nothing about. The Independence West Side has been the first paper to acknowledge the corn. Next! The Albany Democrat has re printed the Gazette's editorial of last Tuesday on "Corvallis' raputation," and hag thus given its mite toward correcting the unjust Impression concerning the morals of our city which pre vails throughout the state. The Democrat has our gratitude. The Philippines Unequaled. Major Charles E. Stanton, of the paymaster's department in the volunteer service in the Philippines, has recently written a letter to Mrs. T. T. Geer, in which he gives some of his im pressions of that island de pendency. Major Stanton was formerly a resident of San Fran- CiSco. He says, in part: "My two years of foreign ser vice will be completed in Febru ary, after which I expect to go to the United States for station. While I shall be delighted to re nt the home lies, yet I will be rather sorry to leave this land of sunshine, for it is, indeed, a tarvelons country. A soil that fill grow anything; a climate that isGed-giyen; room for tens Of thoasaods of American fami lies to make a comfortable living and own a charming home with minimum of labor; virgin forests of a myriad of hard and rare woods sufficient to make the pianos and Pullman cars of the world tor a century and land scapes so beautiful that the Thousand Island and Southern California look like '30 cents' in comparison. "I have been in every state and territory of our union in Canada and Mexico yet I have never seen any part of it equal to the Philippines in general de sirableness. FrOm Aparri, on the north ooast of Luzon, to Bongao, the sonthern point of my territory, is 1,000 miles in a straight line, and I have seen all islands of the group occupied by our troops and a great majority of the ports, traveling 8,800 miles last year. There has been enough danger to give spice to living, and I have worked hard hut neither of us have had a day's sickness, and our life has been one long, sweet dream." Aphis in Sight. It uow looks as if uothing snort 01 a real Alaska freeze wil prevent a repetition of last year's crop failure in this sec tioa, and knowing ones promise us that we will have that freeze Nearly all authorities now agree that the failure last season was due o the ravages of insects, whose eggs survived the mild weather of the preceding winter. Mr. Joseph Yates told the Ga zette man Friday that in all his forty years of fanning an his present farm he never knew of luck a condition as now prevails. The two dally Shasta trains from Port land to California have been recently equipped with the most approved pat tern of standard and tourist sleeping cars, but the low rates of fare will still continue in effect.
