ass THE (MLI.B mil FRIDAY, NOVEMBER 30, 1900. NO DANGERS FROM EMPIRE. In an after dinner speech be fore th Union Lagne at Phila delphia on the ocoasion of the "Founder's Day" banquet of that Organization, November 24th, President McKinley made use of these words. They are charac teristic of the, man and give proof of his broadness of mind, clearness of vision and nobleness of purpose : The value of a national vic tory can only rightly be meas ured and appreciated by what it averts, as well as by what it ac complishes. It is fortunate for the party in power if it under stands the true meaning of the result. Those charged by the people with the administration and legislation are required to interpret, as well as to execute, the public will, and its rightful interpretation is essential to its faithful execution. We cannot overestimate the great impor tance and the far-reaching conse quences of the electoral contest which ended the 6th of Novem ber. It has to me no personal phase. It is not the triumph of an individual, nor altogether of a party, but an emphatic declara tion by the people of what they believe and would have main tained in government. A great variety of subjects was presented and discussed in the progress of this campaign. We may differ as to the extent of influence of the several issues involved, but we are all agreed as to certain things which it settled. It re cords the unquestioned indorse ment of the gold standard, in dustrial independence, broader markets, commercial expansion, reciprocal trade, the open door in China, the inviolability of the public faith, the independence and authority of the judiciary, and peace and benificent govern ment under American sovereign ty in the Philippines. American credit is unimpaired, the honor of the American flag unsullied, and the obligations of a righteous war and treaty of peace unre pudiated. Tho republican party has placed upon it tremendous responsibili ties. The party could ask no higher expression of confidence. It is a great thing to have this confidence; it will be a greater thing to deserve and hold it. To this party are committed new and grave problems. They are too exalted for partizanship The task of settlement is for the whole American people. Who will say they are unequal to it. Liberty has not lost, but gain ed in strength. The structure of the fathers stands secure upon the foundation on which they raised it, and is today, as it has been in the past, and as it will be in the years to come, "the government of the people, by the people and for the people.' 'lBe not disturbed; there is no danger from empire; there is no fear for the Republic. ' Eastern Star Reception. About sixty members of the Order of Eastern Star of this city attended the banquet and enter tainment given by the Albany lodge in that city Tuesday aven iag. A delegation of 18 mem bers from the Salem chapter were also in attendance. The train bearing the excursionists from Corvallis left here at 7 p. m., arriving home about 2 o'clock Wednesday morning. The eveni is thns described in tB Herald: Brazillia Chapter, No. 16, Or der of the Eastern Star enter tained the members of St. Mary's Chapter, of Corvallis, and the Salem Chapter last evening. Af ter an exemplification of the work by tee home chapter, all adjourned to the beautifully deeorated banquet hall where cavers were laid for all guests. After the repast had been dis posed of, Mr. C. C. Parker, toastmaster, in a few well chosen ternaries introduced Mr. Lot H. Pearce, of Salem, who respond ed to the toast, "The Spirit of the Occasion." Prof. John Fulton, of the Ore gon Agricultural College, fol lowed with some eloquent re marks on the "Progress of the Order." Mrs. Llande date!!, of balem, 1 made some happy and well-timed ! j remarks in response to the sub-i 'lect, "1 h gentlemen. The inspiring subject, "The Ladies," was awarded to Mr. G. A. Westgate, of Brazillia, who in his usual happy and mirth provoking vein paid splendid ttidute to the better halves of creation. Hon. B. F. Irvine, of the Times of Corvallis, entertained the guests with some pleasant witticisms at the expense of soras of tha visitors, paying particalar attention to Hon. Geo. H. Bur nett and Prof. J. B. Horner, who were then called upon to defeud themselves, whioh they did 111 well-ohosen remarks. Rebekahs at Home. About fifty Rebekahs of Albany arrived on a special train Motday for a fraternal visit with the Re bekahs of this city. The delega tion of visitors were met at the depot by members of the home lodge and escorted to the hall. Ample arrangements had been made to make the occasion memo rable. A nice program of vocal and instrumental music, recitations, etc., was rendered. After toasts, fol lowed th banquet, which was quite elaborate. The reason of giving ihe toasts before the banquet was on account of the banquet hall be ing so small that it would only ac commodate about fifty guests at a time, and as soon as the Albany Rebekahs had finished their re past it was necessary for them to depart for their train, so that only before the banquet would they all be together. This was the reason for establishing a new precedent. Quite a number of Albany people came over on the exourrion in com pany with Rebekahs asd spent a few hours in our city. "Old Bill" Wants Neal. The following advertisement appears in the Salem Journal 1 Wanted To know the where- aDonts 01 (j JNeal, termer re corder of Linn county, who bor rowed a diamond ring and breast pin of the nndersigfiedj agreeing to return the same after election. He probably in tends returning "Old Bill's" diamonds after Bryan is elected president. Jefferson Review. Mr. Neal attended bar for the "Our Housa" in this city for some time durinr lasfr summer and appeared to be quite an affa ble gentleman. He was elected recorder on the populist ticket in Linn county a few years ago Sold for Good Price. For several weeks, a gentle- man and his family, recent ar rivals from South Dakota, have been occupying the old Thayer place near Granger. These peo ple were delighted with that sec tion, and the head of the house hold has made tempting offers to farmers in that vicinity for the purehase of their property, but without succcess. To the elder Schodl he made an offer of $50 an acra for the 100 acres upon whioh was s'tnated his house and other improvements. This was refused, but a bargain was finally made whereby the gentleman from Dakota secures the entire 280 acres, paying $38 for each and every acre. Be sides this an extra amount is paid for the grain used in seed ing a portion ot the land in fall grain, and for farming imple ments, etc., which were the property of Henry Scheoll. A payment has been made, and the transfer will occur as soon as the balance of the purchase money arrives from Dakota. Land values are not so poor in Benton count7 under this McKin ley administration, after all.
