m mmi mm TUESDAY AUGUST 1U0O. FARMERS WITH THOUSANDS. The Salem Journal, one of the craziest free silver sheets in the country, overreaches itself in an attack on intercollegiate athlet ics. Every issue of the Journal is one long Bryanite screech. It teils the farmer that times are getting harder; that money is scarce, and no one is making anything but the banks. Yet it urges as a point against intercol legiate athletics that thousands of dollars changed hands on the occasion of the last field meet at Salem. From whose hands did it change? From one banker's to another's? If so, the abolish ment of athletics will not better the matter, for the coming state fair at Salem will offer plenty of temptation to these gentlemen to lay wagers. Or. does the Journal mean to say that the farmer lads from the Oregon Agricultural College had thousands of dollars with which to back their favorites? It cer tainly does. The Journal has one picture ef the farmer in ab ject poverty, lacking the necessi ties of life, and another of the farmer's son passing his time in sport and throwing money like a prince. A mind capable of vis ions like this is diseased. ' 'The success of the Americans in the international sports has astounded Europe, as it is the most remarkable series of vic tories ever won by one nation," says Archbishop Ireland in a re cently cabled interview from Paris. "Furthermore," he con tinues, "they have proved the superiority of the training meth ods used in universities and col leges of the United States. I am a firm believer in physical training as an important factor in the regeneration of the human race. He who pays due atten tion to the common laws as to eating, sleeping and regular ex ercise will find himself fitted for all the walks of life. The men tal side must not be neglected, however, while benefitting the physical. As the brain of a scholar is often dimmed by for getfulness of material needs, so the athlete sometimes suffers for not developing his mental pow ers. Intelligent attention to both gives mens sana in corpore sano." During Cleveland's adminis tration we issued bonds to re plenish the gold reserve. To day there are over $430,000,000 gold in the United States treas ury, the largest amount in the history of the nation. Four years ago it was demoni tization of silver and the gold bug which threatened the exist ence of the Oregon farmer, Now it i9 militarism and the army worm. The Hessian Fly. The fact that the Hessian fly has this season attacked the wheat fields of Western Oregon and Washington, gives local in terest to the following bulletin, just issued by the Indiana Ex periment Station: The adult fly somewhat resem bles a verv small mosquito, be ing about one-eighth of an inch in length ; the female being more robust than the male, especially when full of eggs. Soon after the adult fly comes forth the female deposits her eggs upon the upper side of the leaf. The eggs soon hatch and the young larvae work their way down beneath the sheath to near its base which in autumn is just above the roots. Here they re main absorbing the juices of the Stem until full grown, when they assume the "flaxseed" state, in which they pass the winter, During April and May, the main portion of the spring brood comes forth and tne same process is re peated, the "flaxseed" state be ing reached just before harvest Probably the most effective measures to prevent its ravages to be recommended are: (1) sow ing at the proper time; (2) sow- iao- decov strips; () thorough preparation and fertilization of the land so as to provide the ninsf favorable conditions for strong and rapid growth. The active period of the fall brood, in the northern counties extends (approximately) from the last of August to about the last of September, gradually getting later as they go south, po that in the southern portion they will be found at work prob ably as late as the middle of October. It is evident then, that, in order to avoid the fall j brood of the fly, the proper timej to sow wheat in the northern I counties, is between September 20th and 30th, and in the south era counties from the first to the i middle of October. The station i will not sow earlier than the first week in October this year, as the flies were active throughout September in 1899. Decoy strips should be sown in the north, the last week in August, and in the south the first ten days in September plowing these under deeply before sowing the main crop. Notice to Creditors.
