THE C0RVAIL1S GAZETTE. TUESDAY, JULY 31, 1900. "The world should beware f arousing China,' ' says an ex change. Yes, aud China should beware of arousing the world. The Washington Post notes that Cape Nome has reached a point where grave diggers are making more money than gold diggers. The Oregon State Journal dubs the Filipinos "10,000,000 cut-throat heathens." plains the reason why Sppine policy is called aggression." This ex our Phil "criminal The old theory that "peace and prosperity go hand in hand" is busted. Eugene Journal. That's right. We have plenty of prosperity, but peace seems to be a little scarce. King Humbert, of Italy, who was assassinated last Saturday ev ening, by Angelo Bressi, a mem ber of the notorious mafia, suc ceeded te the throne in 1878. He was a wise statesman and gentle ruler aHd was much be loved by his people. Argentina will export 75,000,- 000 bushels of wheat this year. In 189a Argentina exported but 23,000,000 bushels. Here is one 01 the reasons why there is not so much profit in raising wheat in Oregon as there was twenty, or even ten years ago. When the treaty with Spain was pending Mr. Bryan made a trip to Washington to advise his party friends in the senate to vote for its ratification. He is now running for president on platform opposing the policies necessarily resulting from the ap proval of the treatv. Senator Hoar wakes an exceedingly ser ious charge against Mr. Bryan in this connection. The senator say:s "I knew lrom the oppon ents of the treaty, with whom Bryan labored and who labored with him, just what he said and did at that time. He just put his support of the treaty square ly on the ground that it was bet ter to keep the issue for the presidential campaien." It was wholly on party grounds. Sena tor Hoar asserts, that Mr. Bryan appeared at the capital to influ ence votes for the treaty, hoping that it would involve the coun try in such difficulties that the administration would be ruined and the path made easy for the democratic nominee of 1900 who, as Mr. Bryan knew, would be himself. Benton's Blooded Stock. In the immediate vicinity of the Oregon Agricultural College there is far more interest thaa ever taken io fine cattle. Stock raisers are breeding up to the highest possible standards, for they find that the best stock pars the best. erseys are particularly in demand at the present time; in fact, it is diffi cult to find cows of this breed for sale. One of the local causes of this rush for Jerseys is the im petus given by the dairy located at Corvallis which takes milk at the farmer's door and pays fifteen to seventeen cents per pound for butter fat. Good cows are net ting their owners from ten to fifteen dollars per month, and farmers now understand better than ever before why it pays to keep blooded stock. While the dairy business gives the farmers haavier returns than heretofore it promises to do still much bet ter. A skimming station will soon be located at Philomath, which is about six miles from the dairy at Corvallis; and it is predicted that other skimming stations will be located in the near future, if the business justifies the out lay. This is particularly inter esting to farmers for the reason that milk will not be hauled so far, hence the farmer will realize two cents more per pound for butter fat, an item of no little consequence in the course of a season. If the present scheme is per manently successful, as it now promises to be, many a farm that has long been entitled to a rst, will be pastured or turned to clover and enriched while the farmer raises the mortgage which has been growing more burden somc these many years. Pacific Homestead. To Carry Exhibits Free. The Southern Pacific Com- j pany set a mark for liberality on progressive lines when it offered i to carry all exhibits to and from the state fair free. This action, of the company places every county on its line in easy reach oi the state fair this year, and i will enable the southern portion; of the state to exhibit her famous j fruits, vegetables and grains atj a small expense. The following letter is so plain and to the point that it needs no further comment, other than to say that it is up to the people now to in sure a successful fair: Porti.nd, Or., July 26. M. D. Wisdom, Secretary State Board of Agri culture, Portland, Oregon. Dear Sir: In order to enoour age exhibifors and an attendance at the state lair, tins company will transport exhibits origina ting at points on its lines within the confines of the state to Salem and return to point of origin free of charge.
