THE CORVALLIS GAZETTE. FRIDAY, MAY 18, 1900. PEPIBUCAN TICKET. CONGRESSIONAL, TICKET. For Congressman, ist district THOMAS H. TONGUE, of Washington Connty. STATE TICKET. For Supreme Judge C. E. WOIvVERTON, of Linn County. For Food and Dairy Commis sioner J. W. BAILEY, of Multnomah DISTRICT TICKCT. For Prosecuting Attorney GEO. M. BROWN, of Doug las County: REPUBLICAN COUNT! TICKET, For Representative R. T. NICHOLS, Dusty. For Sheriff J,'M. CAMERON, Corvallis. For Clerk J. A. GELLATLY, Philomath For Recorder W. S. TOMLINSON, Soap Creek. For Assessor H. H. GLASSFORD, Kings Valley. For School Superintendent GEO. W. DENMAN, Corvallis. For Commissioner CASPAR ZIEROLF, Monroe For Treasurer MILES STARR, Monroe. For Surveyor G. H. WAGGONER, Dusty. For Coroner J. B. IRVINE, Corvallis. For Constable LEE HENKLE, Corvallis. NEEDS NO DEFENSE. The Corvallis Times assumes that this paper has said some thing "in defense" of J. A. Gel latly, present candidate for coun ty clerk, which is another great mistake in the forlorn hope of that great journal. Mr. Gellatly needs no defense at the hands of this paper. The only object in noticing what the Times said is to show with what amusing ehild-like simplicity it prints "little fairy stories" relating to its neighbors and endeavoring to color them so as to east insinu ations and inuendoes in the hope that its readers may be misled as to the true nature of the facts rtlated. These flights of fancy published in connection with such public matters are intended to mislead and to influence and and change so solemn a matter as the people's vote. Suppose Mr. Gellatly did go to Eastern Oregon to better his "financial condition" or to "make money." Suppose he did make "good or bad invest ments" or lease the "Golden Eagle hotel with its fine sample rooms," and sold these interests and returned to Benton county, or bought forty acres of land near Sumpter. What about it? What is the Times going to do about it? What harm did this do any one? Mr. Gellatly went to Eastern Oregon, and returned a republican. If Mr. Gellatly had returned, as others have, flopped over as a democrat, and ever afterward turned his tongue and pen to befauling the good name and motives of his former politi cal associates, he would have been a good fellow according to his present traducer's estimate of political manhood. The Times, in three distinct articles on three several occasions, referring to Mr. Gellatly, has made use of the words, "Golden Eagle hotel, with fine sample rooms." If the Times wishes to be candid with the public about an important matter, why does it not explain what it means by such expressions? Every hotel considers that its best trade comes from commercial traveling men, who go from town to town carrying their samples of dry goods, boots, shoes, hats, cloth ing, etc., with them to sell by wholesale to merchants in coun try towns, and in order to ac commodate such traveling mer chants, well regulated hotels have sample rooms where these travelers can spread out and show their samples of goods to the town merchants, whom they wish to secure as purchasers. Such is the only sample room the hotel had. What a great ado about nothing to publish on so many- occasions such a trivial thing, to influence the voters of this county. Is that sincere journalism, meaat in good faith to benefit the public? We are satisfied to leave the public to judge whether they will be hum bugged by such chaff or not. The leaders of the democratic party in this connty have con tinuous!)' urged upon the con sideration of the public trashy stuff, published and circulated about opposing candidates, to deceive the voter, when in fact the facts related amounted to nothing but a great noise, so far as the public was concerned. Every democrat and populist, as well as every republican, should be interested sufficiently to see that such insincere politi cal work should cease. If they will vote and elect the republi can ticket, it will put the stamp of condemnation upon that un holy quality of journalism and political methods. The fact remains undisputed that Mr. Gellatly has most ex cellent qualities to make one of the best county clerks which Benton has ever had, as shown by his good and popular services as recorder of this county. He has been raised from childhood in Benton county. His family haye always been good citizens and taxpayers of the county for many years. The name of Gel latly has always stood for hon esty, integrity and for outspoken frankness, free from any taint of deception. It will be remem bered that Mr. Gellatly has twice run for office in this county and he has steadily refused and now refuses to encourage his friends to circulate any tales or matters jeflecting upon his political op ponent. Mr. Gellatly expects to be elected on his own merits. The Times cannot say anything against Mr. Gellatly's goodquah ties as a public officer, and there fore gives the voters subterfuge and deception to draw attention from the important question. It is with no desire to cast any reflections on either the demo crats or populists that the follow ing reprint is. made, but because the flights ot political oratory of the Times have at intervals ap peared ludicrous to us and we find others share our sense of hu. mor. The Salem Statesman has the following: The Corvallis Times speaks thus of Chester Skeels, the Demo-Pop candidate for the lower house of the legis lature from Benton county : ' 'He is himself a living platform, on whose face is written, in indelible lines, the words, 'Honesty, in telligence, sincerity.' " Chester Skeels must have a great face. We remember, a few winters back, when several living plat forms, wi th words like the above written over their honest faces, organized themselves iuto a he harem in Salem and refused to take the oath of office. The Times soon after the county nominations were made pretended a desire to avoid "mud slinging, ' ' but hasever since hunt ed for a chance and at this early date it has thrown the mud and been so completely driven in a hole that it questions the veracity of the democratic leaders in the lower house of congress, Mr. Dockery and Mr. Catchings, for speaking the truth as to Mr. Tongues conduct in favoring Ya quina bay. These two life-long democrats have been in congress for nearly 16 years and they have a national reputation. A public newspaper owes to the public more than anything else to speak the "truth and nothing but the truth," and one which publishes truth in such a colorable way that the public may be misled thereby, is similar to the individual who spends his life dissembling and playing with the words of truth to mis lead his neighbor and soon be comes so that those best ac quainted with the devices em ployed do not expect anything but deception and untruth from the source.
