President McKinley has the facul ty of being able at all times to say the appropriate thing, and in few wo'ds, meaning bo much. Every sentence seems, to have volumes in it when we stop to reflect upon the far reaching purport of his words used. It was in New York as an invite! guest before the Olno . following remarks: 'VVe have had our (blessings and our burdens, and still hare both. We wi'l Boon have the legislative assurance of the continuance of the gold standard, with which we meas ure our exchange, and we have the open.door in the far East, through which to market our products. We are neither, in alliance, nor antagonism, nor entanglement with any foreign power, but on terms of amity and cordiality with all. :We buy from all of them and sell to all of them, and our sales . exceeded our purchases in the past two years -by over $1,000,000,000. Markets hav) been increased and mortgages have been reduced. In terest has fallen and wages have advanced. The public debt is de creasing.. The country ia well to do. Its people - for the most part are happy and contented. They have good times and are on good terms with the nations of the world; "There are unfortunately those among us, few in number I am Burt, who seem to thrive best un der bad times and who, when good times overtake them Ain the United States, feel constrained to put us on bad terms with the rest of man kiud.' With them I can have no sympathy. I would rather give ex pression to what I believe to be the nobler and almost universal senti ment of my countrymen in. the wish, not only for - our peace and prosperity but of alHhe nations and peoples-of thejearth." " 1 aH UCSUVKiRAIUj UlLiEiOLOlA. Speaking of the proceedings' of the democratic national eommittee in Washington last week, the cor respondent of a Boston paper that supported Cleveland says in wind ing op a. report of the meeting: "Behind the scenes it was interest ing to observe that the majority of the committeemen do not iow ex pect that Mr. Bryan will be elect ed." . On the facf of the situation, says the St. Louis Globe-Democrat, Bryan has no reasonable hope , of success, and the democrats in con trol of the party machinery know it perfectly well. ,Yet all of them will declare that his nomination is certain, and probably by a unanimous- vote. There is here some thing of a political paradox, but it has been brought about by a sequence, of events. Time alone can deliver the democratic party from . its singular position. It is inevitably committed to a candi date . who will be beaten as the managers behind him foresee. The causes cf this predicament is not hard to find. In 1896 the demo cratic party abandoned its old creed and went into a fusion with another party. , It can not retrace its steps Its position ia hopelessly bad, but there is none better in sight, and circumstances compel it to fight the second battle on the general .align- ment ot me nrsc. Since the last presidential trial of strength there have been three fall elections in various states and in all of them an evident loss of ercund for the Brvanites. The states that have leit their column are Kansas, Washington, South Dakota and Wyoming. Maryland went democratic last year, but on a platform "written by Mr. Gorman and making no mention of free coinage. Some suggest that the democrats might try Gorman's idea in the national fight this year. It could only be done with some other candidate, for Bryan and silver are Bynonomous. To drop Bryan would cost the democrats all the Transmississippi states that remain to them and the gain in the Eastern or border states would be problem atical. An election practically on the Gorman plan was held in New York in 18t8 and the republicans carried, the state with a plurality for - Roosevelt over Van Wyck of 17,T96. The republicans won in New York decisively again last year on the vote for legislature. .Though party Jines" were much broken in Ohio last fall, the republican plu- democratic aggregate vote one of I the smallest comparatively in the history of the state. - As far as the facts of the political situation are revealed the demo crats can make nothing either with Bryan or without him, so they are disposed to let things drift, knowing at least that another defeat will lessen his superficial popularity, represeuting now, as always, a great deal moie noise than votes. The republican party holds the vantage ground of having redeemed its pledges and also of having con ducted the nation through a series of unexpected and serious emer gencies. It has momentous work on hand connected with the coun try's expansion aud it would not be businesslike to turn it over to new hands and a hostile party, bent on destroying what has been done rather than bettering it. Possibly the Democratic National Conven tion of 1900, like that of 1896, may be seized with a suddrn impulse and do something extraordinary; but no matter what ticket or sensa tion is ground out at Kansas City the electoral table gives the demo crats no encouragement whatever. When we compare the business of the United States with foreign nations during the preceding ad ministration, when the balance of trade , was running against us, so was money, interest, all kinds of trade and commerce, as well as hav ing a mighty panic on hand, what a great and wonderful contrast, compared with the last two years of the present administration in which "our sales exceeded our pur chases by over one billion of dol lars." Just think, what a vast sum and great gain under proper busi ness methods and under the care of a progressive party. It is claimed that all travelers going to Vancouver, British Colum bia by either steamer or train are approached by parties who force all to undergo vaccination. From Dusty. There is not much complaint about the dust being troublesome. Quite a good deal of plowing has been done in this vicinity, but very little seed has been sown. One'day last week MrsDavid. Perin, while on her way to Cor vailis, was," owing to a loose seat, thrown from the hack, and in the fall sustained a fracture of one bone in her wrist, also a sprain of the same wrist. Dr. French, of Monroe, set the fracture, and at the last report show as resting easy. We are sorry to learn that Mrs. George Householder, who has been suffering all winter with neuralgia, is no better. Mr. George B uckingham is very poorly. He has a type of consump tion. . r Mr. Win Larkins has not yet re covered from the mumps. Or e day last week ten men met and cut a supply of wood for him. Mr. Lar kin is a member of the Monroe camp of Woodmen of the World, from which lodge he has received much substantial aid a sample of the good work this lodge and other similar organizations are doing in this land of ours. Mr. Simmons well said, "Man cannot well live alone." Marcus Gragg, who has been at tending school in Philomath, has returned home, and the bass drum will suffer. At the school meeting Mr. Waltz was elected director, and W. S. Humphrey clerk. Much complaint is heard be cause the mail here is one day late most of the time. We are supposed to get a daily mail, but for some reason (which is not much of a naysteryj""it "does not arrive on time. But no blame is laid to the present mail-carrier, we think. The band-boyc are to give an.en tertainment at the grauge hall, March 17lh, to consist of dialogues, recitations, etc. Plenty of music and a general good time. The ex ercises are to conclude by baskets containing lunch, which the ladies are asked to bring. No charges at the door. A cordial invitation to all. The new store building is fast nearing completion. Claud Starr is the expert horse back rider of these parts at the present. People who want pole cats cap tured either dead or alive know just where to apply since the huat- ing match. XYZ. Laundry Agency. A place around the back of her head was bald, and on the top of her head the hajr was only two or three inches long.
