The political ground hog is but, and although his shadow does not greet him, still he is obliged to stay out, for the fight will be on soon and he must have his snares laid. As is usual, and to us mos t singu lar, all the interest in the coming contest will center arouud U. S. sen ators and congressmen. White every state should carefully see that it is properly represented in the nation's councils by strong men with healthy views on national' ques tions, yet we submit that , the chief interest in our biennial, elections should be in the affairs of our state. Oregon though of sturdy years is still in its development infancy and we need strong men at home We want strong men in our legis lature. Although our population is less -ban half a million, "yet we have all the, institutions of stales with ten times that number of in habitants to foster and care for, and this necessarily makes taxes heavy and burdensome. Wise economy is necessary and wisej legislation that will see and know -, how to strangle jobbery and make the tax payers burden as light as possible, This seems to us to be the most im portant thing in the coming elec tion. Select strong men, your best menfor the legislature r.nd then they can safely be relied ! upon to vote . right on U. S. senator and all other questions. :-. ' 1 : PUT THESE QUESTIONS. Senator Wm. E. Chandler", of New Hampshire, . whose head is level on the Philippine policy of the admin' ir x it. r-M : a lBtraviun puis tiio .. luuowiug peru nent questions to Senator A Wm. E. Mason, of Illinois, who is a violent anti imperialist and all around cop per head. Mr. Mason has not at teaipted to answer them, nor can he without completely stultifying himself. If you are pesteied with an "auntie" that wants ; to argue, just put these questions tp : him, and note his answer for future use if you get one: Is President McKinle bound , to maintain the sovereignty (over the Philippines) in our hands until otherwise ordered by laws of con gress? -: - Can any power but congress, act ing by law, make the. PhilioDines a colony of the United States? ' Has any power but congress the Tight to sutrender our sovereignty in the Philippines? Has President McKinley any fight to forestall the action of con gress in either direction toward Snaking the Philippines a colony or surrendering them so that they can not be made a colony if congress so decides? ; '' i ? What is your affirmative Philip pine policy, if you have one? Governor Roosevelt is a strong jnan; one of the strongest men in the United States ' today.. He is Strong at all points, and his. sturdy Unquestioned honesty makes him the best loved man. His speech at the opening of the Ohio campaign tvas a graud . affair, it completely Covered the whole ground, and we are anxiously waiting to see what kind of reply will be made to it by the opposit.on. , Any kind of reply must be lame and impotent for Teddy had truth on his side and he Strikes sledge hammer blows. MONROE ITEMS. . Good progress is being made with ,tlia river improvement on Long Tor.- and Monroe people hope to see Steamers there this winter. Wilhelm & Sons are running both mills and taking in wheat at a lively rate these days. Prunes are being hauled from the orchards in this , vicinity to the dryer at Harrisburg, but the crop 3b very small. - The proposed railroad from Cor vallis to Eugene would be a great benefit to this region, and people here are .willing to help it along as xnuch as posHib'e. Injury to prune orchards on the hill land in this vicinity is much less than it was thought a few weeks go. A few trees are dying but most . of them are coining out ali yight. Clor e pruning and thorough Cultivation will keep the trees all Tight on this hill land and it seems to prevent the curl leaf. " Mr. Barnard is talking of fixing VP the fine spring on his place, putting in a wind7 mill and laying pipe to carry water toe the house and barn,;? It is a good scheme. There is much bottom land in this region growing up with weeds and brush that would -make pood Lhay and pasture fields il broken up and sec ded with timothy, rye grass, ; cured of piles by Da 'Witt's Witch Ha brchard gfas's"or redtop." We feel that they should be publicly expressed. Six months ago we extended our busi ness, i To our stock of Clothing, Oent's. Furnishings, Boots and Shoes, were added Dress Goods, Groceries and other lines. Our store was, in fact, transformed from a clothing store in to a general depot of supplies. The change was not made without some hesitation, for an extention of business is al ways attended with risk ; hut, after thorough consideration, we adopted a plan , and put it into operation. "Small pro fits and quick sales," was our motto. We nailed it to the masthead and it will never be hauled down. We bought low android low. We made it a point to give every customer his money's worth. The day that our store opened for busi ness, and every day thereafter, you gave us freely of your patronage. - You came in greater, numbers than we ever ex pected. .You bought in larger quantities than we dared to hope for. As a result, our large stock of summer goods was almost entirely disposed of. They say of us that we have; cleaned out our stock better than any store in the Willamette valley. This leaves "us with no old shelf-worn goods to offer you. Our measure of success was largely achieved with your help. We appreciate your kindness and we thank you; thank - you thus, publicly for it. We are gratified at your confidence in us, and we promise you to continue to deserve it. V ' In conclusion, we beg to say, that the extraordinary growth of our business has stimulated us' to new effort. We have bought a stock for the fall trade, that is a source of pride to us, and that will be sure to please you. We shall give you advantages that you have never had before. We shall make you prices that for their closeness will surprise you. For lack of space, we cannot say more here. The new goods are now arriving, and they exceed 'even our own highest expectations. Come and see them and watch for future announcements in. this paper. Congratulating you upon the fact that the crop is safe, and thanking you for the patronage you have liberally bestowed, we are, Yours faithfully, F. L. MILLER. Corvallis 6 Eastern Railroad.
