' Although the system of lighting New
York houses with the incandescent elec
trie light has made great strides during
the last three years, and although we
now have one whole d'strict of nearly
a square mile partially lighted by the
; Edison system, it can not be said that
the business has been a bonanza for
anyone concerned, not even Edison him
self, ft has been generally supposed,
however, that the wizard of "Menlo Park
has so managed things as to derive con
siderable personal profit out of his pat
ents. Consequently I was somewhat
surprised to day to leara upon good
authority that Edison is now far from a
rich man, and has very little authority
even in the company of which he is sup
posed to be the head. Like all invent
ors, he bufieved that thore were millions
in his patents, and although he got
enough ready money out of the company
to euable him to live com ortably, he
took most of his pay in stock. .Now,
while the Edison Company has done a
tremendous amount of work in making
the lamps, laying mains, and introduc
ing its system, the oxpone hive ben
enormous. It is a new Lus.iiess, and
every step was more or less of an ex
periment; much work had to be done
over two or three times, and many cost
ly blunders were made. The resul, has
been that the stockholders have not seen
much money in the shape of dividends,
and Edison, relying largely upon his
stock for reward, has practically noth
ing. Besides, there has been a "good
deal of disappointment in the company
over this state of things and an attempt
was made nearly six months ago to turn
Edison out. at least, to render his po
sition of no authority. It was claimed
that he was no business man which is
probably true, and that the company
could get on better without him. which
is probably untrue. Tor a time Edison
succeetied in beat'ng his opponents- I
hear now, however, that they are get
ting the upper hand, and that Edison's
vuieo in the management of the concern
which bears his name is seldom head.

money with whieh he bejra.ii his electr c
light experiments, lis was sufficiently
well known in 1877 to attract the atten
tion of capitalists to his schemes, and
the s'ock of the Edison Electric Light
Company, after, the tremendous news
paper advert'sing he got in 1878, rose to
fabulous prices.- I rehienilxT that early
in 187i) Edison's s'.ock was quoted at
$2,000 for each one hundred dollar
share. If Edison had no: had faith in
his own scheme, he might have sold out
then and have been a rich man to-day.
He kept his stock, and worked night
and day in the service of the company.
Like most new things, there were dif
ficulties, delays and expenses of which
no one dreamed. It took him a year
more than he calculated to get his
system in operat on, and the cost was
double the estimates. It had been an
nounced that the new light would cost
far less than ga. As a matter of fa.-t
it costs far more, and it was not long
af.er the company got its works in op
eration that the stock fell in value and
Edison found him-elf with a good deal
of fame to show for his eig.it years'
work, but with but very little money.
Since the first station was opened,
two vears ago this coming summer,
very little money had been made, and
the work of extending the business
has been slow. In the way of putt'ng
in isolated plants some "money has
been made, but not by Edison person
ally. Of late matters have gone from
bad to worse, and 1 am sorry to say
that the famous inveutor shos signs
- of being bitterly disappointed. He i
no business man, ana speuas more
mone3' on experiments than would suf
fice to support five ordinary families;
hence hi present financial depression.
Fortunately, he is likely at any moment
to bring forth something new, and
there are always plenty of men ready
10 put money into nis scnemes. lie is
now living quietly in a little flat off
Broadway ,in Eighteenth street, for
which be pays a thousand a year, and
working hard at a device for telegraph
ing between a moving train and sta
tions along the line. There is alroaily
owe company with a similar project
and an apparatus for achieving this re
suit, but Edison thinks he can do bet

estimation have endeavored in vain to
glean from her the faintest inkling of
coming events, ami her aplomb is as
remarkable as her discretion.
An instance is going the rounds of
the clubs. When, two years ago, Mr.
'Fortescue resigned 'the Secretaryship
for Ireland in Mr. Gladstone's Cabinet
he was very anxious to hear what Mr.
Gladstone would say of him in announc
ing the event, but was unwilling to ap
pear upon the scene. He therefore, in
stead of taking his ordinary place, made
h's way to the ladies' c age. The only
occupant he discovered on entering
was the one of all o.hers he would have
avoided seeing Mrs. Gladstone. He
was about to evince his discomj.o ure
ia the rugged spasmodic way peculiar
to that tlower of Quaker subtlety, and
which was a subject occasionally of un
pleasant observation on his visit here,
when the lady, perfec tly at her ease,
held up her finger, and, shaking her
head with an air of tender reproval,
whispered in a low tone: "Naughtv,
naughty." Unlike Lady Beaconsfield,
who entertained very little, and when
rftic did with great discrimination, Mrs.
Gladstone entertains with a large and
Eromiscuous hospitality, never troubles
erself about the amalgamation of her
guests and is systematically indifferent

A CAMPAIGN SpCRETVENjWAY
In the campaign of 1884' the two
candidates for governor in a " pivotal
Western State arranged for a series o
joint discussions. Both men were pop
ular, both of fine appearance and were
so well matched in mental force and as
orators that the contest between them
promised to be a magnificent one. For

But one day the brilliant Republi

seemed overcome and spoke laboredly,
The next day he was even less effective
Later he was compelled to ask his op
ponent for a postponement of certain
appointments, which was granted. Be

doned the field altogether.
Meantime the Democratic candidate
continued his canvass, seeming to grow
stronger, cheerier and more effective
with each succeeding week. He was
elected. One evening in December
while entertaining Jseveral gentlemen
he said :
"I will tell you a campaign secret
which gave me the election. With the
opening of my campaign I began car
ing for my liver. I knew that a disor
dered or torpid liver meant dullness or
possible sickness. I took something
every day. When my opponent began
failing I knew his trouble to be his liver
and felt like prescribing tor him, but
feared if I did so he might beat me !

The donkeys of Persia play an im
portant part' n the affa rs of the coun
try, by far the larger part of the trade
of Persia being conducted on the backs
of these long-suffering little beasts. As
one travels over the hard mountain
roads he constantly encounters large
droves of the m'nutest donkeys, wend
ing their way among the rocks to the
tinkle of little bells, bearing the exports
and imports of Persia on their backs.
A peculiarly of all the donkeys used
for this business is the conformation of
their nostrils, wh'ch are twice the
length seen elsewhere. It seems the
Persians have an idea that the donkey
breathes eas:er in traveling over such
an elevated country by having the nos
trils enlarged. The nostrils of the Per
sian donkeys are therefore slit up for
three to four inches.
In no country in the world can such
a variety of the genus donkey be found.
The finest variety are milk-white, and
the size of small mules. They some
times bring the price of good horses,
for they are in special demand for gen
tlemen of ciu'ct disposition, and for
women. The latter as well as the
former alwavs ride astide, and a group
of women riding to town on donkeys,
muffled, as if in grave-clothes, is a won-
uenui spectacle. ihese women are.
however, not as solemn as one night
infer from their funereal appearance.
Under their veils they laugh and chat
ter merrily enough, and seem to be full

14-year-old daughter, Barry Loekie and
wire and Mr. Stokes and wife. His
cartidges being exhausted he procured a
knife and cut the throat of Mrs. Henry
Lockie, and fatally wounded Tbos. Bruns
wick. He then cut his own throat, but
not seriously. Lockie was lynched.

One ton of swamp muck of
average
quality contains from twenty to thirty
pounds of nitrogen. This nitrogen,
notwithstanding the slur3 that have been
cast upon it for its inertness and una
vailability, is of equal value to that con
tained in several substances generally
considcreu to be of value as fertilizers,
such as roasted leather scraps, wool
waste, and other matters containing ni
trogen, and chiefly valued on this Re
count. From the experience of farmers
who have used large quantities of swamp
muck it appears to be of sufficient value
to make it worth while to dig up as
much as possible during the winter, and
to bestow it where it will do the most
good in every possible place and way
in the field in heaps composted with
lime, in th yard spread sufficiently
deep lo absorb all the drainage from the
manure and to be decomposed by its
help, in the pig pens, fowl houses, and
stables to mix with the manure land to
add to its bulk and so enlarge the sup
ply of this indispensable and valuable
