The reason Villard came near going under he was weighted down "with mist stock. Fudge Moore has a new desk in his office- and also a revolving stool the whole costing - 35 dollars or so, and Mr. Cole a writing-table of black walnut .costing $15. Judge Mc ore's office is finely fitted up, and he has so increased his stock of law-books that he now has - several thousand dollar' worth. The Judge has sowed laboriously, and now is reaping abundantly. A. H. Blakesley has returned, bring ing a Miss Clemens, his sister's step daughter with him from Iowa. He says they all go their pile on the Columbian. Mr. Blakesley appears hale and hearty, and returns with enlarged ideas. Mr. and Mrs. Perry are expected to arrive to morrow morning. Mrs. Elizabeth Milps has received two letters from Mis. Per ry whjle jp&ymt. 1 Captain Lemout and wife have erect ed in the Masonic Cemetery, fine mon uments to Mrs. Lemont the first, and her mother, Mrs. Amy Mardon, and to Mr. Kensie Caples, the present Mrs, Lmont'a first husband. They are a credit to the thoughtf ulness and kind re membrance of the donors. The editor of the mist says he is in favor of incorporating St. Helen, so as to have a city marshal to pitch the boys when noisy over the bluff. He is such a Samson perhaps he hopes to get the appointment The Mucklea will have to make an plce for him as he cannot survive long on mist. Next Sunday Iter. Mr. Crozier will preach at St. Johns. The third Sunday in the month fee will preach at Bayview school-house at 11 A. M., which is ex pected then to be in a sufficient stage of completion to warrant the holding of meeting. At 7 P. m. he will preach in tha church at St. Helen. Major T. J. Eckerson says he has written to our County Clerk concerning Blocks 63 and G-tin the St. Helen town site, and received no satisfaction. Mr. Derloii w'io is a Dane by birth understands four or five different languages. Our daughter Blanche received not long since the photographs of Lucy an3 Jennie Nichols. Davenport has hot coffee and fresh oysters. Some one robbed Mr. Godkin's potato bin the other day. W. D. Smith has started writing school in St. Helen. The schoolhouse at Bayview is in a high state of forwardness. G. W. Harris has a man at work on his ranch at Bunker Hill. George Frantz is in the roe of Job a- gain; he is vexed with sore boils. .Received calls from Mrs. Grey and Mrs. Curlier and her beautiful boy. Received a call on Wednesday from Mrs. Stewart and Miss Carrie Guild. Tho sound of tho hammer is once more heard on Blakesley's new hotel. Dr. Stewart's brother has gone East of the mountains to explore that country. Mrs. Vaughn has buijt a cottage near her mother, Mrs. Shattuck's residence. Hon. G. W. McBride has bought him a new fowling-piece of most ap proved pattern Mr. Benjamin Holmes and Mr. John Ayres, both of Cowlitz Gounty have late ly been in town. Miss Nellie Moore is recovering slow ly but surely under the skilful care of Dr. Arthur Moore. Rev. Mr. Itanna is appointed by the Presbytery of Oregon. His field ex tends from St. Helen to Knappa. Mrs. Moore kindly offered her servi ces in taking care cf our wife, but Mrs. Godkin has been Yery efficient in that respect. Obed Blakesley forbids all gunning on Taylor's ranch on Sauvie's Island. Mr. Blakesley is the present lepe of the property. Mr. T. H. Taylor . offers his splendid ranches for sale, one at the foot of Sau vie's Island, the other contiguous to the N. P. R. R. The Strachans tore down their house on this side Milton creek, and are haul ing the lumber for their new houses at Bunker Hill Mr. Wegener says Hon. L. T. Bar in is one of the most courteous gentlemen in a public capacity of any one he ever had intercourse with. Mrs. Adams is. slowly ioiproving, but still very weak. The effect of Dr. Stews art's medicines seem slow but sure, She has been very bad off. Mr. and Mrs. Miles have of their wed ding outfit of 22 years ago the original sugar-bowl, which Mrs. Giltner has promised to ornament with flowers, There are four lots to bo given for a a Christian Church at Columbia City, so a parsonage can .be attached to the Church. Mrs. Giltner w;ll give two lots. - Mrs. Fowler of Coffin Rock has erect ed a fine monument to the memory of her husband. At the base is the sen tence, " My husband is dead, but not forgotten." We met Mr. Wegonet, the civil engi neer who completed so artistically a map of Columbia City. He is a genial in telligent gentleman and we were pleased to make his acquaintance. Dr. E. McCabe, dentist, will be at St. Helens Monday Nov. 12th, and remain until Thursday Nov. 15th. Those de siring dental operations please call early, and make appointment. Marvin has started a fish ery at the mouth of Lewis River on a little island adjacent to Mr.1 Richard son's. He reports his business qs highly successful. He supplies St. lieleu mar ket with fish, fowl and deer meat. Mr. Wegener has prepared a most ele gant map of Columbia City on the order of G. W. McBride, To say it is an el egant affair would hardly express the re ality. It is perfect, iu every respect J. S. Davenport's plants are all in bloom, and make his place a very pleasant place of resort He keeps all the late papers mental as well as mate rial food. There is a man in John Edmonds' era ploy who makes images of Christ on the Cross and places them in a bottje. They are very beautiful. We want 1000 to 5000 fence rails for which we will pay high Bt cash price. Wt aleo want 2 or 3 thousand pickets. I ! IN MEMORIAM. Died at the residence of her son Abe Neer at Neer City Nov. 6th. at 9 a. m. Mrs. Elizabeth Neer of paralysis aged 67 years. Her maiden name was Eliza beth King. She was born on Ne w Year's day 1816 either in England or on the Atlantic Ocean when her parents were in traiisito America, . Her father mar ried a Pennsylvania Dutch woman for a second wife, so she understood that- lan guage and married Caleb Neer, a Ger man ia Butler City, Butler County, Pennsylvania. They left there with four children in the emigration of 1852, coming here in company with Mrs. Frantz and children, Aaron Broyles, Mr. and Mrs. Fowler of Coffin Rock, Daniel Messner and wife and Mrs Eat on. They took up a Donation Claim on Germany Hill, and suffered all the hard ships and privations ofthose early times. She was a very industrious energetic woman and would labor all day in St. Helen thei fack on her back food for her little fivraiiy,- while her husband was preparing land for cultivation. She bore in all 13 children, and seven aro living grown to manhood and woman hood. She afterwards exchanged her land on Germany Hill for Idnd at Neer City, where possessed of all tho comforts and luxuries competence can briug, she died. One of her daughters married Mr. Ranck, the County Judge of Clarke Co. W. T, and her grand daughter Lulu Ranck was adjudged the queen of beau ty in the celebration of 1882 at Vancou ver. Jjer children are all energetic men and women, and "rise up and bless her." In her last sickness she was sensible. She wished Mrs. -Fowler and Mrs. Fos ter to prepare her grave-clothes. She desired to see her coffin which was ex ceedingly beautiful. We never atten ded a f unrral whero everything was so lovingly done; there was no clergyman, so we were requested to make some re marks at the Court House, and at her grave. We did, and particularly had freedom at the cemetery in the grand old woods that witnessed the heroic struggles of this excellent pioneer worn an. Mrs. Fowler and her brother, Mr. Cross, who both, have very melodious voices sang at tho Court House, and at the "rave some of the old familiar hymns cf long ago. The last melody they chanted waa exceedingly beautiful, and so sho was laid to rest amid the tears of children and old friends of years agone by the side of her dead off spring, and left in the care of the All father with the glorious arch of Heaven above her grave with the winds to sing her honored requiem. Instead of the wild whoop of the cavagp, the cry of the panther, and growl of the bear bereft of its young will float above her the steam whistle 'of the; mill, the car and steam boat, the ringing of Uic church bell, and the sound of the hammer and all the hum of civilization. She helped to lay the foundation of this great state, and if there is olie crown brighter or one seat better in Heaven it is reserved for the old pioneer woman. Her memory will crow sweeter and sweeter as the ages roll by. 1 rojn the low ground of Itvth she rose Triumphant over all her foes, Iu the pure light of He-ivc fclie-stands, .
