Tho late dance at the residence of Thomas Clo.uuiger was a decided success. It was one of xhe most brilliant affairs of .the season. There were 38 ladies in ajl present, and 7 gentlemen. We noticed thfe ladies in particular, Miss (Lanihcxv son., Miss McXawee, Miss Freeman, Miss Corbiii, Miss Bonser, Miss McKay, Miss Ramsey, Miss West, Miss Emma Fullerton, Mrs. McNamee, and Mrs, Stingley, Tliey were eA dressed in Uiost excellent taste. For brilliancy, fascination and good sense the Seappoose ladies bear the palm. Thomas Clouing er, the host, was agreeable, affable and i ner. He is a perfect gentleman in his own house, and keeps up such festive patties like a prince. The cooking was done by Mrs. Mary Cloninger, Thomas' wife, and showed what .excellent training in that and all womanly arts her good motluer gave her, Throughout, the dance was a most en joyable aflair. Of the gentlemen pres ent George Grant and Dan Batch added by their assiduous attentions and civili ties much pleasure to the occasion. We had made a great omission if we had not mentioned Mrs. Grant. . Mrs. Sting ley ileserves particular mention for the piquancy and brilliancy of her conversa tional powers. Tilis affair is one of those reunions that will be inscriled in gold letters upon the tablets of memory. A Chinaman not long since hired Mr. Stingley to carry him, bag aud baggage, to Gosa's Landing. He agreed to pay hiin four dollars. When he arrived at his destination lie refused to pay but two, and attempted to unload his stuff, but Mr.'Stingley drew him to the ground by his pig-tail. Thereat the Chi naman gathered up a club; but just a I he was ready to strike, a' six-shooter was stuck in his face, and lie opened his purse with wonderful alacrity,' and con cluded he had waked up the wrong Mel ican man. j We have wished for a photograph ma chine to get views of tho huge steamers stuck just above our house on the St. Helen Bar. We think they would con vince Mr. Yillard that Frogmore and its harlor was of more intrinsic value as a shipping point for big ships than a dozen Portlands. Things arc develop ing fas-t to pi'ove that a poor wise man about the size of Major Adams lias more brains than all the boasted intellect of tho puffed up conceited set that have hitherto run this God forsaken part of sublunary territory. Prof. Quick, the County School Su perintendent, says Mr. Roussel passed the finest kind of an examination. It is to be hoped he will be employed to teach the public school. He is a very talented young man and of ! excellent principles, lie is so ingenious lie can turn his hand to anything. While at work for us one day he found a door lock out of order, he took an old brass wire from a lamp burner, and put in a spring. He is not one of the helpless kind. Mrs. Lemont had a very nice ride with us and our family on Sunday. We went over to Milton and to Aaron Bi'oyles', who sent a reJ apple to the Captain who was 71 years oid that day. He has looked for the railroad lo! these many years, and lived to behold it. He is one of those crazy meu that has lately proved sane, while those who laughed at his wild idea of a railroad! new call themselves Adarnphool. ' Received calls from Mrs. Woodman and children, and Mrs. Watts and child ren. Mr. and Mm Woodman have vis ited St. Helen, having made a trip to the Sound. Mr. Woodman sold out his tin shop in Albina to Mr. Boos, and is seek ing a nejv location. He thinks lie will settle at Vancouver. The whole family ! lok in fine health, and as if prosperity had attended them since their depart- ure from St. Helen. We met Mr. R. "C. Campbell a very pleasant gentleman. He and his; friend M. Pomeroy were getting an outfit to go on a pleasure trip to Pomeroy's ranch, He had acted as coroner on a man late ly drowned at Rainier called Friday, a Kanaka. Mr. Campbell stated he had a jug of spirit in the boat to accompany hiin to the fjnrit world. He ran his boat agairst a boom, and the sudden shock threw him overboard. After Major Adams succeeded in hjs paper the Mnektes thought ! anybody could run a newspaper. So they started one, aud soon run it into the ground;result, their lower lips hang down and the "official " wife-heating uliquo look like a lot of lately woaned calves. Yea and verily they wall; as valketh a man in a sling. At Shintaffer'.s and Edmonds5 Saloon is a splendid billiard table. Jf you want to know how fine it is just look in and tec for yourselves. It giyes the saloon j a splendid appearance. , I desire to close all accounts d-ue me before September 1st, 1885. Fullerton has sold his beau tiful ranch ta Mr. McMillen, and moved his family out to his laud near the Kite of Moore's quondam mill. He will eve ato a Paradise of beauty no matter ho.w rough a wild he is transplanted into, and the smiles of his interesting sons Land daughters! would mako any place agreeable.. J udg Moore is attorney of the Divis ion of the U. P. R. R. between Port land and Kalama. This addition to his other business keeps him on the w-ing. His brother, late a graduate in medi cine at a Vermont University is on his way to this Upper Coast, intending to settle at'sointj favorable point. James Shintaffer has bought Enoch's fine span of horses and a new wagon-rig at Portland of the most approved pat tern, and has gone to hauling rock from the quarries. James haa got a finer fit out than any of the boys, as a reward of his perseverance and industry. Good luck to Jim! J. W. Campbell is flourishing. His prosperity is a bitter pill to his enemies. Some men in this community havo got so used to taking those kind of pills they walk up now and take them like little men. Our prosperity has physicked the Muckles so bad they look as thin as eel skins. A lady down the river who haa not had access to a Dictionary, spoke of the Muckles as Muckeels. We think their coat of arms, should they ever return to Hinglandj should be an eel runniug through some muck. No wonder they squirm. gDr. J. M. Roberts, Dentist, 1S3 1st Street, Portland, Or. will visit St. Helens and Columbia City 3d Monday of each month, to remain the three first days of the week at St. Helen and the remaining three days ai Columbia City. Mr. Cooper, the butcher, is almost a fraid to go into his meat shop for fear of being butchered by the yellow jackets. Ho carries his hand in a sling, having encountered sundry and divers of the business ends of those yellow rascals. We return thanks to Mrs. Giltner and Mr.. Meeker for flowers for bouquets for our children, who tendered them as sad offerings of sympathy for the little babe lately to'rn from the fond embrace of its paicnts, Mr. and Mrs. Allen. Mr. Titus H, Taylor is in Vermont. He is engaged in house painting just to takj up hi mind If he didn't work he would die right off. His daughter, Lillie, has greatly improved in looks but don't like New England winters. Josie Copeland was riding horseback at Judge Moore's thf other day. After she dismounted sh Haid, " Now stand still till I curry you down," and de went at him with brush and curry como like a first class "livery man. Captain Lemont has received a tatter from his cousin Joseph H. Lunt of Win slow, Maiiie. lie intends to soon visit Oregon. This has been a very prosper ous year agriculturally in the East. Mr. Lunt cu; 85 tons of hay. The R R warned J. L. Benham and family to leave thnir home, as it was in tended to make a monster blast on Tues day. We listened for the blast, expect ing lo 1c lifted clear out of our boots, but tlidn't hear it. One of the stones in memory of one of Judge Winton's family in tho ceme tery has fallen do urn, The rock in wljich it was set seems to have become disintegrated by the weather. N. C. Dale, Sherriff, is at the IJospi tal in Portland, nearly blind and T. C. Watts, Deputy, lias to do all tho busi ness. This greatly interferes witti his business in Muckles' mill. The Lewis County Xugget ma); had his roller cat up by an old sow, Ife will have to use a horse-collar now. These country editors have to pass through scenes and unseens. Hoi. G. W.
