2 THE COLUMBIAN. St. Helen, Columbia Co., Or. jFBXDAY. ISAECH 50, X883. 8TTE3C2XPTI0N BATES. 1 year, in advance months " 3 month " ... ADVERTISING SATES: One square (10 lines) first insertion. '. . $2 00 1 00 Keh subsequent insertion. E. G. ADAMS. Editor & Proprietor. LOCAL 1TEWS. Tuesday we rode to Columbia Cify which continues on the boom. Hoz. Oaples ha sold another lot this time for $250 to John Waud. The white tents of the Chinamen marked the approach 'to the City. We took tea at the Butts House, kept by Mr. B. C. Failing. It is a Inely kept hotel and meets the re 'quirements of the times. It has 14 reg ftlaf Ijoarcfefs and still they come, Mr. ButCs the owner of the property showed tis about the premises, and every tiling bespoke adaptibility to the emergencies of the times. The" dance-hall has been Bub-divided into sltrpfflrg roonisy arid makes the accommodations perfect. Cliis hotel will have Undoubtedly a great fun of prosperity. It has opened out in just the nick of time; Tee site of Columbia City is very fine, and she has ita fear of Jtet' 1itdtt the loved' and lost Lenore, wMcfc every .of id' prophesies will be a 2nd edition of Ealama. The great trouble about Lenore will be that gum boots will be the principal article tr sale. ' Its situation is too low. It will have to be built on piles, and then it will take piles to kep its head above water and Keep it from drowning. ThL .has been a great troftble with Portland. 5L Helen and CoTtfmbia Citv are alove the freshet line, and their growth' will be permanent Nattfre h'tf-f made these places fit for a great city, a rival of San Franciscoy and they will coalesce in one city that will astonish the oldest inhabi tants. - , ' 1 ; We would thank out . many friends for the way they have stuck by us since the mist started in to get away our pat ronage and subscriliers. Our enemies have had a grand chance to damn them selves in the. eyes of every respectable person. They have shown their auimus, and that is not the only thing they have 'shown. Their utter want of brains, their utter disregard of principle shows in uiat literary aiortion, tne mist, me idiots of the community like the mist It is just soft enough to suitthe weak condition of their brains. The more range it has, like a Columbia county hogVthe poorer it grows; it is a walking cholera morbus. Its editor is a sounding brass and tinkling cow-bell. Mrs. John Stehman of Rainier was lately visiting her sister Mrs. F. II. Hughes at St Helen on Saturday.,-Her little child had a fit at Columbia City, and came near dying. She suWriled for the Columbian. Said it was way ahead of the mist She is a very pleas ant, sociable lady, and says Mr. Collund will send us a box of canned smelt even if Pomeroy was too mad to bring them. This industry is one of the live business es of Rainier, and is bound to be a suc cess. Glendye met ah unsophisticated in abitant somewhere in the lower part of the county. Said personage stoutly re fused to take mist or water, but the great Glendye aroused himself like a Hielligefaht lion, and went for him again. He carried off the prize, a promise to take the mist, and returned covered with glory to fall on the neck of J im. Muckle and weep tears of heartfelt grat itude for his triu uphant success. It was a tetching scene. Mrs. Roycroft was in town on Tues day from Carrollton. She said her hus band is still living, and the report of his death in the papers was all a myth. Some papers called him Boycroft, some Bay croft, Ray croft, Hay croftj and yet it didn't kill him. He must be tough to survive so many mistakes. People might have wanted him to die, but he" couldn't see it, he was too near-sighted for that Mr. Glendye has lieen down to Clats kanie. and informed some friends he had got 27000 new subscribers. lie lias got them 'to get, that is the way he has got them. "... Each one must have a home? ppatlnc (ose of mist, arid by time it got around, all there wouicj ba fqr each "would be a little due (dew). ,- v John A- Carr, of Portland, who was 4rfei at Oroviile, California, charged Vith murdering Fernandez in 1862 was 'hocorably acequitted j 1TEW3 DROPS. He oujdit to know; he has been there often enough, . , i Mr. Philander Harris, onb of the solid men of Rainier, was in town on Tuesday, Ho goe his pile on the mi.st dne of John Lamberson'tf diqgliters is stopping at her grandfather's. Aaron Brol s.' She is a nice healthy-looking girb ' Wonder whether Glendye took of the mist-subscribers a mortgage !on their farms to the Muckles for their subscrip tion. F. A. Moore's office is crowded with business men. Mr. Mooro' lius lately got $350 worth of new law books in his library. Mrs. Richardson is with her mother, Mrs. Morse in this hour of trial. Mr. Morse remains about the same on Tuesday. Robert Fullerton had to carry an um brella the other evening when he went to visit his lady-love for fear of taking flte mist. Edward Potter is learning the cabi net maker's trade from Otto Godkin. Mr, Godkin says he bids fair to make a line workman. " 1 llairry Lanberson was in town on Saturday last. Wanted a teacher for their1 District, at the school-house near V. W. West's. Mr. Long, a gallant soldier belonging formerly to a Kentucky Regiment is looking up a honiestead in this vicinify. We welcome all such. The line on the Scappooso has been relocated, and rijjit of way had in some instances to be repurchased. A new right of way was purchased of Joseph Copeland. Mr. S. A. Miles has received a letter from' Francis. It was written in a good legible business hand. It contains the information that Mary E. Butler's baby is quite ill. A large flouring mill will soon be orect?cl at Columbia City. A greater part of the stock for this enterprise has already been subscribed by prominent men of the N. P. R. R. Co. "The road embrogfio with the N. P. R. R. has been settled to the satisfaction of all parties. The County is to be reini buWrt? to' the f till fr all damages and , expenses, so says Judge Moore. Liphani says he will build a new i printin? ofiice soon. He has heavy Uaek- j ing, at least enough to back out well. He should get a set of Kindergarten blocks to reach the intellect of his sup porters. Out in the vicinity of Milton creek the midway of the N. P. R. R. is cleared out There is a big camp close to Mr. Otto Godkin's The Chinamen have stolen nothing from them but a few .eggs. Farmers and others desiring a genteel lucrative agervcy businoss, by which $3 to $20 a dav can bt earned, send ad dress at onc-,- on postal, to U. C. Wilk sox, & Co., 193 and 197 Fulton Street, New York. Glendye war.is to know when the boiler gets out of water. He can find out by the pump, and if there is no water in the boiler, pump in a little mist, and charge it to the Muckles; they are his bankers. The Muckles nave reported Glendye has turned Republican. If he has flop ped, it is like a dying smelt ; he and his patrons would turn themselves inside out for a bit, and skin a louse for its hide and tallow. Enoch Meeker and family have re turned from California, lie had expe rienced the first drop of rain since he left Columbia county. He was glad to get back. He says Ben. Watts is do ing well, and is a big fat man. Two or three portable mills will be soon set up in - different localities in the vicinity of St. lff, len. The Moore mill removed from Scappoose to Albina has changed hands, and will soon be re turned to Columbia County. Glendye's " calculations" are those of the milkmaid carying a pail of milk oi her head. He has nothing to lose like the1 lady in a California stage-coach that was robbe I, and with the Muckles for bankers feels as well as smells strong. Mr. George Harris says the visit of ourself and family acted as a cure, on himself and mother. Mrs. Harris is better, and George is out again. We are glad they enjoyed our call. We en joyed it as much or more than they did. In reply to a request for information concerning the proposed railroad from Forest Grove to Astoria, made by J. F Hallorarij of the Aalorian, R.
