King delivered a very interesting address at the Court House on Friday evening tc a very attentive audience. He handled the subject in a candid, calm, yet masterly rffanner. On Siinday at 3 p. M. he spoke tor the child ren in the Church, arid Sunday even the Court House, had a laYge concc-iffae to hear him again. His wife spoke in a beautiful and effective manner to the Band of Hope on Saturday. On Mon day they and Mrs. Moore came out and took lunch with us. Wf met Clarence Dagget, stepson of Mr. Ruheri Mr. Robert n oftc of the parties in the new firm soon to build a sawmill at the mouth of the Nehalem river. Hughes and Barnard are the other partners; they are backed by Hod6e raid Davis in Portland. Barnard owns the land for the mill-site. A nar row channel of of a mile wide marks the entrance of the Nehalem into the Pacific Ocean. The water over the bar at the lowest stage of water is 10 feet. The Galloways at Union Co., Oregon, have had 27 cases of the measles: Sam uel and his little daughter were the worst casos. His wife, &iq Perry's daughter talks of vising Columbia Co. this summer. Mrs. White, formerly Mrs. Carr, has bad health. Tuesday eve was .a grand time for smelting.- The St. Helenites smelt the battle from afar, and went out in all kinds of vessels like Jonah to take in the miniature' whales. They just scooped them up sans ceremony. J. K. Gill's wife and daughters came the other day to pay a visit to Mr. Gill's family on the' Scappoose. They were liifR-iocrking, intelligent children. Dodson talks of moving down from Sauvie's Island, and driving his team to haul Belgian Blocks. The mist congratulates two new mar ried couple as a quartette; a duet would have been more appropriates It is expected the air in St. Helen will soon le bottled up, and offered for sale. Enquire at the wharf. There came near being a fire at J. H. Alexander's the other day. The roof caught from a defective flue. A young Simpson was lately in St Helen. He is a son of Postal Agent Simpson and brother of the poet - The N. P. R. R. are surveying up the opposite side of the Columbia a Max well's Point opposite Columbia City, Tho N. P. R R. has commenced op erations at Columbia City. They have surveyed out the street &c of the city. About $1300 worth of lots was sold at Columbia City on Wednesday. A Mr. Pinkney was one of the purchasers. We think the Ireland place owned by Mr. Be vis would make a splendid quar ry. It is very handy to tho river, and worth a big fortune. J. L. Benham has great varieties of seed potatoes of the latest and rnost cel ebrated kinds. He is a live man in ev erything relating to a garden. The Muckles have forbidden anyone taking any wood from their yard.
