REVIEW OF THE DAY. ELLA WHEELER. If we sit down at set of eun And count the things that we have done, And counting find One self-denying act, one word, That eased the heart of him who heard; One glance more kind, That fell like sunshine where it went, Then we may count that day well spent. But if through the life-long day We've eased no heart by j ea or nay; If through it all We've done no thing that we can trace, That brought the sunshine to a face; No act. most sin a 1, That helped some soul, and nothing cost Then count that day as worse than lost. Darwin's Attitude Towards Kellgiou. It is no longer customary to greet every mention of Darwin with a jest con cerning the ancestral ape. The develop ment theory has crown and thriven in spite of the various phases of adverse feeling which have indicated the attitude of Orthodoxy toward it. Thirty years ago, the discussion of the whole matter was confined to s ientitic circles. The public did not recognize its existence as the great modifying influence in the world of thought, which it wa3 sure io become. This indifferen .-e was succeeded bv a sudden alarm. The suggestion that a secret conspiracy against Christianity was hatching roused the fears of its ad rocates. Nobody seermd to think it was at all worth while to find out what this terrible new doctrine was. Discretion formed a small part of the valor which assailed it with every imaginable weapon. The age did not countenance the rack and the thumb-screw, so tlie next best thing must be done, and faithfully it was done. No effort was spared to denounce, sneer, and laugh the Darwinian theory out of existence. In order to look fairly at the attitude which Darwin sustains toward religion it is necessary to clear away some of the rubbish with which the question has been encumbered. Science is not ir religious, it is simply extra-religious. Science and religion do not deal with the same questions, they do not cover the same ground. Within their own proper limits, they touch only on one side, the Theistic. Science, strained to its last legitimate point, can only confirm the truths of natural religion. With the truths of revelation, from the very na ture of the case, it can have nothing to do. It bears exactly the same relation to the Koran, the Rig-Veda, and the Kend Avesta that it does to the Bible. The iogic of its facts teaches the existence of a Creator and a Law-giver to the uni verse. Many of the most brilliant as well as the most religious minds of the century have for years felt entirely free from anxiety in regard to the growth and spread of the theory of evolution, feel ing that it did not touch, that in the nature of the case it could not touch, the essential divine truth. They held the view just quoted from Darwin, that science deals not with the nature of the Eower that works, but with the methods y which it acts. It is a question not of the iuitial cause, but of process. It would be as absurd to accuse Stephen son of denying the power of steam, be cause he concentrates his attention upon the developement and explanation of the steam engine, as to assume on the evi dence of the evolution hypothesis that Darwin denies the existence of a Crea tor, because he is occupied in making clear the laws under which he creates. Topics ofthe Times. Silas TTegg's Discovery. When Silas Wegg made his famous bargain Golden feelings as the "literary man" of the Dustman, he insisted that his should be taken into account. Droning prose and "dropping into poetry were so much, and Uncle John, Aunt Mary and the other gentlefolks in the big house opposite his crossing were so much more. It is true that he had i never spoken to any one of them, and that the names he knew them by were entirely of his own devising. But they were associations; were properties to which a crossing sweeper had as much right as a dustman. And, of course, Mr. Boffin recognized the fact, and paid for the abandoned properties of his "literary man." Now it seems to us that Mrl Dickens used Mr. Wegg rather hardly when he held him up to derision as a grasping old knave who Imposed on his simple patron with his feelings, asso ciations, and much like intangible enti ties. In reality Silas was only a trifle ahead of his age. Every week Teutonic Croesuses give thousands for worm-eaten cabinets, which without association, might be dearly appraised at the price of house-room. Maria Antoinette's writing table brings the salaries of four curates capitalized, simply because Mr. Wert heimer is aware that associations are saleable, and run up as time goes on at compound interest. Mr. Quaritch draws astounding checks for faded folios, solely because the garish stamp on the cover tells that the volume was once upon a time handled by Cardinal Bichlieu, Mme. da Barry, Avrora von Konigsmark, or some equally eminent patron of virtue and polite letters. Mr. Ro'setti's ad mirers rush to bid 30 for chintz cur tains, for which Wardour street would have scorned to have paid thirty shil lings simply because they were asso ciated with the house of the poet-painter in Cheyne walk. Mr. Tennyson s walk-ing-sticK or pipe would bring any day a better price than the most gorgeous cane in the Burlington Arcade, or the latest triumphs of the Pesth meerschaum carver's art. Indeed, there are few peo ple with anything in the shape of a heart or an imagination who have not, at some time in their life, dipped deep in their pockets for the gratification of some asso ciation in the shape of chair, table, tod dy ladle or dog-eared book. To Mr. Wegg, therefore must be accorded the honor of discovering that sentiment was amarkable commodity, which can always command its price when mere signifi cance will hang on the auctioneer's hands. London World. A happy temperament is more to be desired than anything except gold, and the price of it is above the price of every thing except rubies. We have been truly affected by the song of a childless parent who seems to be resigned to his fate. He sings: Alas! I haven't Tennyson To Soothe my d&ya declining. But I suppose it Scott to be, do It's useless, sir; repinlnf . all sours. Love is a queer thing, and so is happi ness. To enjoy either completely it has to be shared. J We gain as much in avoiding the fail" mg of others as we do in imitating that in which they . excel. A Texan friend of purs is willing to wager that there are; more shooting aflravs in New lork in a month than in the Lone Star Commonwealth during an entire year. When you are tempted by the pleas ures and excitements of life if you will just say, "Dear mother Eve I never did like apples," you will be a rare man and a respected citizen. ; A Western man a while ago eloped with his mother-in-law. Not that ho had any fancy for the woman. But she had said he was the worst husband on earth, and he wanted the world to see that she really didn't think so. A very rare and interesting print has been acquired by the; trustees of the British Museum, namely, "The Boiall Protienei of Our Most Sacred King James I."
