a! - iV''-:- h 5l m . i 5 THE GOING OF LONGFELLOW. Br 8. H. PALFREY. The lyre is made of funeral flowers.whereat no minstrel sings. The silver cord ia loosed. For aye are stilled the thrilling strings; . And, at the font of melody, the pictLer lieth broken. The kindliest eyes have looked their last; the tongue at last has spoken "The deep, dull pain is ended now the patient . anguish over." By his beloved's side in peace, is laid the wait ing lover. For more than Israel's forty years, frave souls with sorrow aching Marched bravely through their desert ways to music of his making. Thegoal, the reat, and the reward, 'twas time that he should win them. When fast the evil days drew on, that have no pleasure in them. Asa hurt nerve shoots round the breast its sud- den dart of fire, So runs around the world's great heart the sharp electric wire, That bears the tidings; and about the streets the mourners go In numbers that man kuoweth not,and man can never know, Still spreading over every soil and under every clime, A train that is as wide as earth perhaps as Ions as time. ( For whosoe'r the greatest beour own (too well we know it, If we may trust our sorrow) was the best and best-loved poet. ! A crowned and eceptered king of song, he kept no lonely state He walked as in a garden rare, and did not lock the gate, But, from the clusers of his joys, drew wine to gladen others From hitter olives ol his greifs, sweet oil to heal his brothers. He not for foremost places pushed, but sat aboye tiie strife j Where men are shouldering meu,and sot to music all our life, j As sits the gentle organist behind the shrieking choir And players vying each with each, with string and reed and wire His sott hands laid upon the keys, and presses out a tone, ' That subtly sweetens all the air, and brings unto his own The lower and the sharper pitch, discordant of the rest; He rises and is missed; and now his mastery stands confessed. J . 5f S j Oh friends few friends that still are left how fast the lights are going, ; Going out, that made mis life a scene with loye and beauky ! How oft for some one near and dear, the plumed chariot black That holdeth only one at once, hath called ! 'Twill soon come back. Got! make our waning lamps meanwhile, with holy oil, burn steady ; And let us have no care but this, that we be also ready 1 n About Flirtation. Diversity of age is, according to a re cent authority, no bar to flirtation, pro vided it-doea not pass a certain , point of maturity sooner reached by women than men, and a few years' advantage on one Bide often confers a certain power; but the line must be drawn just within the boundary when, though the knowledge and ' experience necessary are at their highest point, the inclination to do mis chief or to confer benefits and instruct youth begins to fade. It is perhaps for tunate that the blood of seventeen is rarely united to the wisdom of sixty. Ah, 'Si jeunesse savait; sivieillesse pou- vait!" It may be ajlded that any benefit which superiority in age is supposed to give is precisely the one which most temmine flirts would part witn.ii it were but possible. One of the first conditions to the par ticular relations which we are discussing is a certain amount of equality in social position; or, in default of this, some great and counterbalancing quality must not only exist, but be plainly apparent on the side of the party where the de ficiency occurs. Without this, there is always a degree of condescension inthe one, and a servility, or at least an em barrassment in the other, which is fatal to a full and free exercise of their best powers. Their conversation or inter change of sentiment is apt to degen erate into the badinage of j a gentleman with a serving woman, of the insincere and peremptory affection which a well-born and zealous wife displays towards her "husband's constituents when an election is immi nent. For this reason though, as a specimen of sedulous flirtation and the success to which it may ultimately at tain, nothing has ever been written like it the provocations of Jane Eyre with Mr. Kochester have always struck me as being of a faulty and degraded type. That gentleman, was, indeed, greatly exercised by Miss Eyre, but there was too much attitudinizing as master and servant, as employer and dependent, to make it an example to be recommended for the guidance of others. When that remarkable book was in process of demo lition by those reviewers whose predes tined fate it was to have to eat their words, the most sensible remark about it was made by the wife of a Scotch minis ter: "The only grudge I have against the book is that since it was published all the governesses have taken to imita ting Jane Eyre, and the plainer they are the more they do it." "What are the signs?" I demanded. "Keeping diaries, speaking in monosyllables, and address ing all gentlemen as 'sir.' Watch and you will see." I watched, saw, and was convinced. Sharp Practice. There is a good deal of talk about the smartness of Yankees, but on the other side of the water they manage to turn out Borne very shrewd rascals. How is this for a case of sharp practice? "A cer tain Hungarian Countess, well-known for her riches and beauty, (the same spirited lady who last year seconded her brother in a duel), graced with her presence the performance at the Aresa,. or summer theater. On one of her fair fingers my lady wore two splendid diamond rings exactly like each other. During an "entre acte" there presented himself in her box a big fellow in gro tesque livery six feet of the finest flunkey imaginable. Quoth he, in the finest Hungarian, 'My mistress, Princess P., has sent me to beg the loan of one of your rings for five minutes. Her High ness has observed them from her box op- posite, and is very anxious to examine one more closely, as she wished j to have one made after the same pattern.' With out an instant's hesitation, the Countess handed a ring to 'Jeames,' who bowed with respectful dignity and retired. The performance over, the two great ladies met on the staircase, and j the Countess begged her friend to keep the ring at her convenience. 'What ring, my dear?' Denouement! Tableau! The 'powdered menial' was no flunkey at all, but a thief; and the ring was gone." "The police were informed of the im pudent trick. Justice seemed to have overtaken the culprit in. a very few. strides, for the next morning the Count ess while still 'en robe de chambre,' re ceived a letter from her that the thief had been caught, and the ring found on his person. 'Only,' added the note, 'the man stoutly denies the charge, and de clares the ring to be his own. To clear up all doubts, please come to the police station, or send the duplicate ring by bearer.' To draw the second ring from the finger and intrust it to the messen ger a tine fellow in full -police, uniform together with a handsomp 'tip' for tha glorious news, was the work of a mo ment. Only when my lady an hour later betook herself radient tD the station house to recover her jewels, a slight mis take came to light. 'Well, my rings? I could not come myself the instant I got your letter.' 'What letter, madam?' Denouement! Tableau No. 2! The thief got them both!" Dr. Bliss Gets Even. The editor of the Evening Critic tells the following at his own expense: He had been suffering for a week past with a carbuncle on his i neck. Yester day he called at Dr. Bliss's office to have it lanced. Bliss cut and ! slashed so vig orously that poor Buell fairly howled in pain. "In heaven's name, Bliss, are you trying to murder me?"' "Oh, no," was the phlegmatic reply. "You said in your paper last summer, during Garfield's illness, that I was squeamish in using the knife. I'm only showing you that I am not," and ho cut harder than ever. Buffalo Advertiser. Rough on Sallie. A Chicago family were among the passengers on a ' steam boat that was lazily plying the waters of a Florida river one day lastmonth. The youngest member, a boy about eight years old, happened to espy an alligator basking on the banks anil was greatly excited by the spectacle. Running across the deck to where his mother was talking with a friend he tugged at her skirts until he attracted her attention, and then pointing toward the recumbent monster, cried out: "Oh, mamma look yonder! There's one of j sister Sallie's old gum shoes." i ; The picture that had delighted the neighborhood: Artist "There is the barn, with the pigeon on it. The barn. . you see, is supposed to be half a mile away." Visitor "But there are the jHgeon's feet; you can see them distinct ly." Artist "Of course, I made them plain on purpose." Visitor "What ! do you mean to say that there's a man living who can see a pigeon's feet half a mile away?" Artist "Oh, sure enough don't mention this. I can! fix them feet." TlreatrlCMl. Some time ago Messrs. Hodge, Davis & Co., of this citv. read in a Massachusetts paper that lion. Charles K. Ladd, auditor of that Btate, was afflicted with an incurable kidney disease, and had been obliged to give up work and return to his home. They immediately sent him a box of their celebrated Oregon Kidney Tea, and from time to time sent him other boxes. A few days ago they received from him the following letter: Commonwealth of Massachusetts, 1 Auditor's Dep't, Boston, Nov. 11, 1881. J Messrs. Ilodge, Davis k Co.: Dear Sirs I have no hesitation in saying that I have been much benefited by the use of the Oregon Kidney Tea as a remedy for a kidney difficulty which has troubled me for six or eight years. I can heartily recommend it to those who are similarly afflicted, as a safe and agreeable remedy. I shall test its virtues further, for I have great faith fn it as a specific for many diseases of the kidneys. Respectfully yours. CHAS. B.
