The editor of the Bedrock Democrat at Baker City, would like to- know the whereabouts of Alex Blakely a printer. The first wheat shipment of wheat bv railroad, Walla Walht aal Wallula railroad took place Tuesday Oct 14th tweuty-four tons from Cumming's Station, to- Wallula. The length of the trip was nine miles and it was made in little over an hour. The people of Walla Walla valley think the affair a big thing and, of course, the beginning of a 'new era." The Walla Walla Union of the 18th of Oct. mentions the arrival of s nunx ber of emigrants who have crossed the plains the past season in the good old fashioned way with ox teams. They came from Illinois, Kansas and Iudi ana. The Albany Brass baud went out serenading the other evening, and all came home happy. A Post Office has been established as Little Elk, Benton County, with Mr. E. II. Baker as Postmaster, The Chinese in Astoria have become somewhat heightened, having pur chased and equipped a sloop for their own private use. A jockey club has been formed in Grande llonde Valley, and on the 11th, 12th, 13th of November the Fall races will come off. A pawn broker's shop has been opened at Salem, and b'hoys are only awaiting the owner thereof to secure the license to give him a call and greet him 89 "uncle Dr. Dawne informs the Statesman of the flourishing condition of the Agricultural College at Corvallis. There are between two hundred and seventy five and three hundred students there at the present time. The prospect of the College were never better. Tke Statesman complains of danger ous pitfalls fur foot passengrrs, caused by excavations made for the reception of gas and water pipes. They were hotly pursued, and are now luxriating in by menial bowers. Immigration to the Goose Lake coun try has not been near so large as had been anticipated, the war having deterred many from going there who had written to their friends last Fall that they intended to come this season There is nothing now in that hole region to cause alarm. The Statesman of the 24 th say : It is astonishing to see the amount of business that is being done at these mills at the present time; whoat is rolling in and flour roiling out by hun hundreds of tons every week. Mr. Kinney told us yesterday that they are turning out four hundred and fifty barrels, or forty five too of flour daily, During the present week, snd previous to yesterday, they shiped four thous and barrels, or four hundred tons of flour to Portland, when it will be re shipped, per steamer Ajax to Saw Francisco. They are now making up a cargo for England, which will be shipped as soon as it can be ground. We were also told by Mr. Kinney that the Company havo just put in one new stone at the mill, and have another nealy ready, which will be in use iu a few days. They will also have a chop stone running in about a week and when in full blast they expect to tarn out 500 barrels of flower per day with ease.
