We ftave received copy of the Weekly fate published at Portland. The Ji'etca is a lafge Bine column paper, and contains a very Urge amount of good reading matter, and from present appearances is de fined to become oae of the best family papers in Oregon. The editor is one of Of egoaV best writers, full of energy, ambifkro and wit. We wish the Weetff Jftwr great success VrilATflC WENT FOR. The Sad Francisco CAr9iicU sayp fltaC W. L. Mitchell, after some year? fetidence it otfr neighboring State of regoo, wncfe he followed his profession' of fie law honorably, was elected to the Senate of the United Statet. It Wis 'charged that his success ta politics ass attribtrtaMe fo- the fact fhat he had aeteJ as the attorney of lien Hoflarfay in hh railroad schemes and Jrdf the friendshrp of this railroad fettblate. We can scarcely call Hollf6?af a railroad king. His schemes tre not tttt enough, nor his rocket deep enotogh, nor his success in railroad building sufficiently marked to invest him with the royal title. He is a fcort of a satrffp ot provincial magnate, undoubtedly the Biggest toad in his focal puddle; but (hen the ptxddle is a small one. After Mr. Mitchell's election it Was ascertained thtt he was not Mr, Mhchetlj out Mr. Hippie , that he hfld chatfged his flarfle, tlat he bad fled his native tale;tfiat hehadde c rt cd hia Wife aftd abandoned his chil dren, and that his dealings with former clients were open to severe criticism. Tba people of Oregon, with their Old fashioned notions of morality, felt ftomewhat scandalized, and wondered hot that Mr. Hippie should have done such things but that, having done tileffl; he should hate dared the ascci t to the hight of such dazjfling political Honors, when exposure Was so sure to follow. Mr. Hippel procured his name to be changed to Mitchell, and, when tUt Republican Contention assembled, ema posed ia great part of Federal (Set holders, he caused himself to be tadened. He Was indorsed, fory-five persons voting for him, and twenty seven voting against him, and then the Convention procCeeOfed to put in nomi nation a candidate for Congress We presume1 the Congressional candidate, tending upon the Ilipple-Mitceli platform, did not indorse the Hippie history, and, in event of his election, did hot pledge himself to run aWay from Oregon, to desert his wife and leave Ilia children ; bat the good people of Oregou, With their old fash ioned notions of morality, got confused and declined to vote for the Hippie Mitchell Republican candidate, and sent tho Democratic Nesmith to Wash tfigtoir. W5 do not exactly uudcre tano Whether Nesmith's election it claimed (U a political or social triumph. PROCLAMATION OP THANKSGIV ING. By the Praident of the United States of America. The approaching cloea of another year briuga with it the occasion for renewed thanksgiving ami acknowledgement to the Almighty Roler of the Universe for the ujnumlered mercies' which be has bestowed upon us. Abundant harvest. have been among the revarda of industry. With local exceptions, health has been among the blessing enjoyed. Tranquility at home and peace wrlh other nations have prevailed. Frugal industry is regaining its merited recognition and its merited rewaids. Gradually, but, under the providence of God, surely as we trust, the Nation is recovering frim the lingering, results of the dreadful civil strife. For these and all other mercies vouchsafed, it beeomes ns as a people to return heartfelt and grateful acknowledgement and with out tfrauksgiving we nny unite in piayers for the cessation of local and temporary suffering. I therefore recommend that on Thursdavr the 27th day of November next, the people meet ia their respective p'acos of worship to make their acknowledge ments to Almighty Crod for His bounties and His protection, and to offer to Him prayers for their continuance. In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand and caused the seal of the United States to be affixed. Pone at at the City of Washington this ilth day of October, in the year of our Lord oe thousand etuht hnndred and seventy three, and of the Independence of tho United States I the nicely seventh. Sned, Ulysses S. Gramt, By Hamilton Fmf, Fiesidunt. Sec. of State. KAIIAVAY ACC'IDKNTM IN tNC LAM)AM)Ali:iUCA. The recklessoess of American rail way officials was once proverbal. if it is not now ; but the English railway are bearing off the palm in the nnmbcr of accidents and in the number of lives destroyed. A cable- dispatch of the 30th of September says : ''There were a" number' of accidents on the Birtish railways to day, and several persons Were killod and injured. The most serious accident was to the Scotch express train A dispatch of a few days previous enumerated eight or ten accident, with a loss of several lives. But the reports for a year show a great preponderance in the small islands of Britain. A I'drltameotary refurp issued to the British Board of Trade gives the statistics of railway disasters for 1872 in the United Kindom. The return is the first which has been prepared for an entire period of twelve months under the Regulation of Railways Act, 1871. The total numher of persons killed during the year, according to this return, was 1,145 ano! 3,038 were injured. The Total number of pas engers killed was 12724 from causes beyond their own control, and 103 from their own misconduct or want of caution. The Total number of passen gers injured was I,4d2, of whom 1,247 received their injuries from causes beyond their own control, and 215 Irom tbeir owh misconduct or want ol crutioo. Tho number of railway servants returnjd as killed under the former head is Gl, and under the latter 5G8 ', tho lrijnrcd in these two classes are 876 aod 1,010 respectively. Seventy persons were killed and 53 injured while passing over railways at level crossings. Un der the head of trespassers and suicides, 258 arc reported as killed and 107 injured j and miscellaneous, not inclu- i ding any of the preceding classes, 380 killed and 181 injured. A list is also given of tho number of accidents unattended with loss of life or personal rnjuTy. It extends over thirty two pages of the Blue Book, but no summa ry is appended. It arpeara from one of the tables in the book that tho total number of passengers killed on railways from causes beyond their own control from 18G2 to 1872 was. 271. Ir an introductory noto it was stated that these returns are made by the compa nies themselves, and tho great. discrepancies between the number of accidents returned by the various cdmpanies leads to a doubt whether they all make he return with equal care and ccmplctcnees. . Tho Railroad Gazette of, this "city publishes a tabulated exhibit of "acci dents in this country for the year beginning with September 1, 1872, and ending August 1, 1873.
