ASNAKB STORY. A Terrl$ FIgtt Between a Hlark Xnakeand Map The Man Wins tie Victory. f From tbe Holliikr Advance August 2d. Due of tbe fiercest coofhets that wc have ever hewd of was that between a man of tbe name of Meegan, who ro cently settled on the YiJos ratine, in the Paoocfco, and a fnuke oi the dorsal is glut epecies. Meegan lrtJ gone at an early hour oo Monday morning Inst ta fall some jaung trees, when he felt peculiar motion beneath his right foot, on removing which he was tbun deratrnck at seeing a snake raising his bead and body rapidly, and in a perpeu ploular direction, with IYE8 GLANCING FIERCELY. Without a moment's hesitation and almost without thought of the conse quences, Meegan grasped the body of the snake at a distance of about fix teen inches from the head and held St firmly as his only chance of escape ur thought what was to be don. Mean time the snake was coiling the lower part of Mecgan's body In circles and pressing him so acutely as to leid rum to believe his bones would :tve 1 way to tbe pressure. The snake was nw moving his head to the right and left darting at Mecgan's head, while the latter was compelled to dodge bis head so as TO AVOID THE SNAKE'8 ATTACK. Meegan at this time, finding himself losing ground while the snnko was gaining strength and vigor, recollected that he had a jack-knife In his povket, and, after much trouble and nerve. succeeded in getting hold of it, and, by a vigorous effort, he cut the body of the snake across, about an incl from the spot where he he'd it It was, perhaps tbe greatest relief he ever experienced to find the snake's body relaxing and ultimately tailing from bis (MeegaoY) body The head and upper part of the snake, although till active, was evidently getting weak er, and Meegan ultimately succeeded. by means of his knife, in slaying the snake altogether. The latter measured pine feet eight inches in length, and was ol the blaok speoies. Meegan has preserved it in spirits, with a view of forwarding it to Ban 1 rancisco. Train tells his Story. Oeorge Francis Train, who is almost as crazy for notoriety as Barnum, contrived a plan to get a free advertisement in New York by publishing selections from the Bible, He was examined for insanity, and told the following story: , I was born in Boston in 1830. I was educated in the Methodist faith by my grandmother, who told me I must not swear, nor smoke, nor drink. I think there were fifteen commandments In that family, aid up to eighteen years of-age I had kept them all, strange as it may appear. I have crossed the ocean forty-two times, visited every ratable in creation, looked into the windows of all tho nations, and talked and whispered with ti em; have seen more sights through key-holes at night than almost any man living. I never drank or smoked in my life, and never broke the commandments, and no won der I am on trial for insanity." Often, this unseen and unfclt tenant of the organism undermine tbe constitution, end in vites the attack of enfeebling or fatal diseases, without exciting a suspicion of its presence.
