We presume it will never make a
tot : difference, in the amouDt of
tobacco which ie annually chewed,
looked and unnffed, no matter how
many tracts or books may be written
on the evils of each of those ways of
disposing of a very filthy weed. But
it wty at letfit set the chewers and the
embkera and the unufferers to thinking,
to be Informed that Prof. John Lizars,
of the Hoyal College of Surgeons, has
'been investigating the merits and de.
Isfiut cf tobacco, and, in a book which
N bai jost" published on the subject,
snakes a very strong case against it.

he finds a large proportion of the
elamint called nicotine, a colorless,
. liquid alkaloid, with an acid burning
alt4ld.i The author says "it is one of
the .most intense of all p msods,
approaching in its activity the strongest
preparation of prussic acid." Auother
element is nicoiiniao, which he charac
" tenses as a poison of deadly power.
As to the physiological eneets of tobacco
the author has satisfied himself by loo;
eterience and close observation, that
they are ruinous in the last degree,
bu the physical injury resulting from

greatest. He says " a danger of fur
greater interest to those concerned iu
the preservation of the individual, i
the enfeeblcinent of the bnnaan mind,
the loss of the power of intelligence
I and moral energy ; in a word, of the
vigor of the iutellect." The author cites a
lirpi number of cases of paralysis,
bcart disease, and other organic disor
dera eaused by the use of the weed,
nd gives it as his professional opinion
that tobacco in all its forms is "a most
deleterious drug." He dwells particu

After months of waiting, actual work
was begun upon the line of the Texas
and Pacific lluilway yesterday. There
was no display about it. The officials
ot the road seemed to studiously avoid

trumpet brayed out the triumph of San
Diego's pledge to the road which is to
make us, with time and patience,
