PACIFIC trade: ports.
Those of Australia and New Zealand.
The wonderful island continent of
Australia, with its neighboring islands
Tasmania and Kew Zealand, contains
on their shores, washed by the waters
of the Pacific, many fine porta and
harbors now the seats of flourishing
cities and towns. The area Australia,
Tasmania and New Zealand is about
equal to that of the United, States but
the circumstances of soil and climate
are very different. By much the
greater part of Australia is hot and dry
with a deficiency of navagable rivers
and of arable land. There are immense
tracts, however, on the east and north
situated to the culture of Sugar , Cotton
and other tropical production, a tract as
large as the whole of the Pacific Coast.
Three fourths of the remainder will be
devoted to sheep husbandry. From
this may be predicted the nature of the
commerce tha twill in future subsist be
tween San Francisco and the trade ports
of Australia. We shall have to supply
a population as Urge as the United
States with wheat and all the various
productions of the temperate climate of
this Coast, and shall in return be pur
chasers of their Cotton, Sugar, and wool,
vhich we will manufacture and dis
tribute abroad to the world commencing
at the north and passing a series of fine
harbors, most of which are yet deserted
and silent but which will in future be
the sites of gieat commercial cities wc
at length arrive at
BRISBANE.
On a river of the same name several
miles from the sea, but possessing a port
on the navigable portion of the riter.
The inlet into which the river flows is
known as Moreton Bay, and bears in
several respects a striking likeness to
that of San Francisco, it i& located on
the Coast, in south latitude 37 deg.
30 min., and longitude east from
Greenwich lo3 deg. It is sixty.five
miles in its greatest length and twenty.

largest of which close its mouth and
shelters it from gales and storms.
Several rivers navigable for a few miles
enter it. Urisbrane was originally
founded as a convict colony; and both
it and the country depend on it, now
known as Queensland, were long parts of
New South wales, but it is now an
independent colony with its own
Governor and Legislature and is advanc
ing in population more rapidly tha any
other portion of Australia. The colony
contains an area equal to all the States
and Teritories west of Nebraska, Kansas
and Texas, and is specialy favord by
Nature for cultivation of Sugar and
Cotton and the growth of Wool, its
mineral riches in Gold are rarticularv
celebrated, and it eontains mountain of
iron and marble, it has a population of
about 150,000. of which Urisbrane and
Ipswich contain abont 30,000. They
are of course like allotrer new cities
chiefly of ood. Queensland imports
nearly everything in the shape of luxu
ries and necessities, exchanging for them
her Wool and Gold. She is now
beginning also to export the produce of
her cotton plantations

On Port Hunter, at the mouth of the
Hunter river, is the next important
aeaport on the Australian eastern Coast
is in latitada aoath 23 dag. 50min.
and longitude 152 deg. east from
Greewich. it is the outlet of probaly
the most fertile district in the colony of
New South Wales, but one which has
the misfortune of being devastated by
destructive flooda. The Hunter itslf is
a fine navigable river. Newcastle is
well-built city and if the center of the
important and increasing coal trade of
New South Wales. It promises to hold
the relation to the manufacturing cities
oi Australia ana the Pacific that
Newcastle in Great Britan and the
European Continent Last tear we im
ported 115'332 tons from this eity in
over one huoderd vessels it has largely
tha balance of trade against us. itB
population ia about 12,000. Leaving
Newcastle and coasisng for about 70
miles south we at length arriro At the

SYDNEY,
The capital of new South Wales,
located on Port Jackson harbor in
latitude 33 deg. 55 min. south, and
longitude 151 deg. 25. east from
Greenwich. Though not the largest it
is incomparably the finest city of tie
south. It was founded before, the
epoch of American Independence, and
in ccnscqnence presents 'more of the
characteristics of a European town of
of the last century than one would be
prepared to find iu a city of Australia.
Many of the streets, particularly those
adjacent to the harbor, are crooked aud
and ilbpavcd, but as a whole Sydney
presents fine streets, churches, markets
and public buildings, and her scenery
js unrivalled. Port Jackson, the en
trance to which from the broad Pa
cific is guarded by what may be termed
iron walls of grautite, exteuds for
fifteen miles into the country in the
mar ner of a great river, and has a
multiude of dependent inlets intersect
ing the laud in every direction. The
beauty and pictureqesness of thesa with
their smaller bays aud wooded promon
tories, in the former , of which nestle
beautiful villages and the latter of
which are crowucu with superb villas,
cannot be surpassed iu the world,
Port Jackson can hold the commercial
fleets of the world. New South Wales
of which Sydney is the capital, pro.
duces for export Go'd, Wool, Tallow t
Hides, Whale Oil, Coal, Lumber of a
fancy kiud, and imports nearly every
article of manufacture required by her
population. New South Wales has
now a couple of hundred miles of
railroad completed on the great line
over eight hundred miles intended to
unite Sydney with Melbourne, and
which has to cross the great chain of
the Blue Mountains. This line is
being built by the Government, as are
the great majority of all the rail road w
lines in Australia. Sydney contains a
population of about 100,000, and New
South Wales one of about half a

A Beautiful Incident.

es vith animal distress. About a year
ago, a dog was fet upn by a crowd ul
cruel boys, and pelted with sticks and
stones. The poor dog had given no
offence, but this matters not. lie

tried to escape from his tormentors, and
had nearly succeeded in doing so, when
a stone hurled with great violence
struck him on the fore leg, bruising the
flesh and fracturing the bone. The
animal howled piteously, but nono of
his persecutors went to his relief
Having injured him, they turned
coldly away and left him to his fate.
The dog limped to the stable of Mr.
Edward Kilpatrick, moaning Piteously
In one of the stalls of the stable
was a well bred young horse of more
than ordinary intelligence. The
distress of the dog seemed to moved
the heart of the horse to pity. He
bent his head and caressed the canine
and inspected the broken leg. Then
with his fore feet ho pushed some
clean straw into one coner of his stall
and made a soft bed on which the
dog was induced to lay himself down.
A close and affectionate intimacy
was at once established between the
horse and the dog. The horse was
being largely fed on bran mash, and
one day, when receiving feed, thinking
the dog might be hungry, the equine
bowed his head, caught the canine
gently, by the skin of the neck, and,
with his teeth, lifted him into the
trough cr box. The dog fell to with
a hearty will., which showed that hi
hunger was great aud that his gratitude
was equal to his appetite. At
night, the two animals thus Btarnce-
by brought together) slept in the most
roving manner. The horse would
arrange a soft bed for the
dog, mid then lay down and
tenderly encircle the canine form
with one of his forelegs. It is seldom
that such a beautiful and authentic in
cident is brought to our notice.The horse
showed for the unfotunate animal more
of that feeling which we term humanitv
than did the doxen lusty youths who
were presumed to walk in the image of
tneir Uod. Way, it took the poor
victim of man's persecution to its
heart and home and tenderly nursed
