Shtf ilrc raUlfpublirau Ll.AS, SATURDAY, NOV. 0. The Real Cause ot The Failure. There is no noult but that the ma jo: ity ofHth voters of the Uuited States really desired a change of administra tion, and felt in their very hearts, that Grant was not the best man for Presi dent, and also that he was incompetent to act as such. The tacts are, the peoplo have had but little to do with the matter, Grant was nominated by tho politicians who held office under Jiim.and who desired to be continued in office for another four years, and when that nomination was made the people nowhere exhibited any enthusiasm, Wt the nomination was made, and Could not easily be unmade ; and of course the great body of the Radical Robalioics would vtta for Gra.t 14 their regular nominee. Greeley wa3 nominated at Cincinnati by met .who hid operated with tJ0 Republican party until in their opinion, (t had become corrupt, and as using Grantas a mere tool to enry out their plans and principles, lhat would end in injury ! to the people, and endanger llepublican Institutions. After his noiiMuatioTi, it becamo a question with the Democracy, whether or not they had better throw up their cran'z ttion as a distinctive party under that name, aud join in with the Liberal Republicans for the sa-kc cf success. Their convention came-hto in the year and at its sitting i& was understood that the question had been settled in favor of uuiting under ttd name of Liberal Republican. The result was, that Greeley received the nomination, at Baltimore, with great, and alnaost unparaleled unanimity This action iuspired tbo llepubiicans Tjrhohacl left the Grant prty, and alio Vany Democrats who before that time htd been faltering. From that time to the October elections, the Greeley j arty were sanguine of success From the time the result of those elec ions were? kr.own, there wa3 no enthu siasm ajantfes-t'jd or interest felt by tne ; a vacates of Greeley's election lie bit instead of gaining strength in the regu lar llepublican party, and the Demr-c-rr.cy began to to weaken by crowds. The -ihocfeM . too great, and so noas L the tfiiia i.ca the main battle was to bo fought, that it was impossible to rally the forces. It is true, thut the General bravely mounted his political btce'f and let tho van, crying, en to victory That wheu the army .looked they saw none but Horace Greeley, and the-- cry fell itill boru. Things thus went cd till election day, Tfhen it trars pired that about one third of the Dcm ocratic patty ramaincd at home or j threw' mv their votes oq O'CW.L.,.!, u ir,;,; " , tfii- or.nortu.'' ,: .... o .x. i.ir...p...J a small jon.on oi iiitm vuicu iui uiuui : - a ..- i '.l i i I aud-the remainder Uepositea tneir du- lots for Greeley." . Of course this gave Grant a lan-e majority without an effort I nn the part of his friends. The result j that Grant will receive a very large clectorial vote, not because, however, ! . there was any particular enthusiasm for . him, for noi a gun has been fired, but simply for the reason that Democrats! woiiid ' not vote for Greeley, but put i. . 1 into the. field a Straight Out ticket, j which action being seen and under-!
