Soft falla ilmmgh the pothering twilight, The rain from the dripping eaves, And stir with a tremulous rustle The dead and Aying leaves ; While afar in th wlUt of the shadows," I htrar street Voices o bulls Cotne bwo on the wind of Uio autumn, That fitfully rises and swells. Tbey call and tLoy answer each other' They answer nd minscle again As the deep and the shrill iu an anthem Make harmony still in their strain ; As the voices of tho seutineU minglo In mountainous regions of snow, Till from hill top to hill top a chorus rioaU down to tho v.alU-ys below The shadows, the flre-li.ht of even, The sound of tho rain's dbtjtit chime. Come bringing, with rain eottly dropping, Sweet thoughts of a shadowy time; The slumbering scenes of teclusion, From ftorm nd intruders uloof, We feel when we hear in the midnight The patter of ruin ou tho roof. When the spirit goes forth in its yearnings To take all its wandering homo ; Or, afar in the regions of fancy, ' .Delights on swift pinions to roam,. I quietly sit by the lire light The fire-light so bright and so warm, Fori know that those only who love mo Will seek mo thrcugh shadow and storm. But should they be absent this eycung, Should eveu the household depart Deserted, I should nut te lonely ; There still would be guests in my heart ; The faces of friends that I cherish. The smile, and the glance, and the tone, Will haunt me wherever I wander, Aud thus I am never alone. With those who have lft far behind them The joy and the sorrows of t'me -Who sings the sweet songs of the angels In a purer and holier clinic ! Then darkly, O evening of Autumn, Your rain and your shadows may fall, JJy love and my lot ones you bring mo My heart holds a feast with them all. There is nothing purer than honesty ; nothing sweeter than intv ; nothing warmer tliun love; nothing richer than wisdom; nothing hiIir than virtue; and nothing more steudi'usst than laitli. A Huse Airship. Samuel A. Kin:;, the celebrated aer onaut of this city, is about couiph titiu' the construction of a in ouster balloon, which, in poiut of size, wiU outstrip anything of its kind ever brought into actual use in this country. It is very properly called the Colossus. The body of the balloon is a perfect sphere, except that there is the usual elongation ou the lower side of the neck. Its circumference is 11)1 feet- and its capacity is nearly 100,000 cubic feet Only in the large cities could a suffici ent supply" of gas be found to li 1 1 it. Twelve hundred yards of 40-iuch best Lyman milk? cloth, furnished exprcsjdy for the purpose, were required in its construction, and five months have been devoted to the work notwithstanding the fact that sewing machines materially lessened both the time and labor. Four barrels of oiUvarnish, of the kind gen erally used by Mr. King to coat his balloous and to make them impervious to gas, were Uit-d to cover the surface of the Collossus. The cloth is in single thickness except on the top where it is double to secure greater strength, and to make the mammoth envelop strong in other parts, thire are 24 staya or bands ruuning entirely around it. Suspended to a net work of strong cords will be two cars. The upper one is intended for scientific observations, and will be fitted up for scientific intru ments and fur the accommodation of observers. The lower car will contain the other passeugers and the ba'lat. The collapsing card, which is brought into use only when it is desirable to collapse the balloon and let out the pas suddenly, as for instance, when a land ing is made iu a gle, is sewn into a seam a distance of seventy-five feet from the neck upwards. In detaining the balloon upon the ground in alight ing, three anchors will be used in place of one which would be sufficient in the Case of balloons of ordinary size. Tbcse anchors will be arranged iu a peculiar manner, and in several particulars Mr. King hs introduced improvements in connection with the balloon. The gas envelop, netticg and basket will weigh between 1400 and 1500 pounds. Filled with hydrogen gas the Collossus would ' be able to carry between 0,000 and 7, 000 pounds into the air, and with car burated hydrogen, or the common illu minating gas, which has much less buoyancy, 18 or 20 passengers can be taken, together with scientific aparatus, and a sufficient quantity of ballast for a l6ng yoyage. From the figures already given, it will be seen that the aironau tic craft is indeed a Colossus. Acorn parison with the size of some of the other balloons used in Boston by Mr. .King, will assist our readers how to form a better idea of ifs immensity. "VhiJe the Colossus has a capacity of nearly 100,000 cubic feet, tho General Grant, with which Mr. King has made many ascensions here and eiswhere.holds only 15,000 cubic feet. The Queen of the Air had a capacity of 33,000 feet, the Star Spangled Ban ner 50,000 feet, and the Hyperion, which, on it first trip carried no less than eight persons from Boston, a dis tance of seventy-five miles, and on the following day made another long voyage, capacity of 05,000 feet.
