About a year ago Miss Emma Har ris; who lives near Oak Grove, in this county, accidentally ran a piece of a needle into1 her leg pk,t ket knee. It has been bothering her .oc casionally since, and at times would be so pain ful as to keep her confined. Various efforts have been made to extract it, b ut of no avail, ast week we were told tbe pain was so great t waa feared amputation would have to be re ported to. This week we understand tbe pain is pat to great. The needle in working its way jhjough tbe limb Is supposed to have come in contact with some of, the nerves which causes the intense pain. Various extravagant rumor, have been set afloat concern'tng this tmala-4 V in this county. There is hardly a place in the county but is charged with being, iefutsted. Wo stated last week, on what we considered good authority, that there wero two cases in the county, one in Kola and one ra Liacoln. We have learned Mince tbrt the cafe at Lincoln has entirely recovered iuid that from the first every precaution wis token to prevent any oue from taking it. Tbe ease at Kola has, according to Dame Rumor, turned out to be something oth er than the small pox. We only give this as a rumor, however, and would not vouch for it accuracy Mrs. F. F. Vietet in her bk eatkled " All Over Oregon and Washington " says of Polk county. Pwikcaaty has everything to make it rfch. and prosperous. On Sunday the Swiss vote on their new Constitution, which is submitted as a substitute for that of Tbe present Constitution provides that on a petition of 50,000 Swisa citizens a change in the Constitution can be made and must le ruhmittcd to the vote of the jcoplo. If such a provision cxisitcd here J5QJ)l)Q names would be njuired. X new Constitution mint have an abso lute majority of the popular vote and also, of the cantons. Among the changes to be passed upon are the fol lowing: Any Swiss may have a vote in another canton after a residence of three months Obstacles to the freedom of marriage arc also removed. Hills for larger expenditures than 1,000,000 fr, and upward, are to be submitted to the people. If 00,090 citizens demand tbe abolition of a law, the question is to go to voters and the cantons, and v. ma jority of both will repeal the law. Absolute freedom iu religious faitb is to be introduced, and qo one can bo taxed to support a State or Cantonal Church. The Federal Government is to take .charge ef the Schools. Hence forth tbe Central Government is to as sume the entire control of the military affairs and to have charge of the rev enues and expenses necessary. The State is to control the railways. A uni fication of the legal codes of the cantons is proposed. Capital punishment and imprisonment for debt is to be abolished and gaming houses licensed by the State are to be closed within a period of five years. On the whole, the changes are popular, - liberal, and pro gressive. They have been the work of centuries, in which time Switzerland has grown from the. narrow limits c f absolutism to the broader equality ot a Democracy. ,.
