We con gratulate the people of that section in securing a services, and rccouiu nd him to them as ne who understands Lis business. He has treated successfully many casts in Polk county of which we are e nvrrsant, all of which hear testimony to hi ability. Another " sfry with a wr-man in it" coras to us frcm our neighboring town of Bethel. It feems' as we leorn the facts, that there resided in Bethel two rival candidates for the affection? of a fair lady living in Sakui. The rivals got into some trouble, when a third party inter fered, taking sides with one of the parties against the oher. The two together succeeded in defeating the one who was playing a lone band. Af;r this, the two colleagues wentto Portland frorn whence thv write a. letter to the one IcfJ, behind, applying some very severe epithets which, roused hi.s anger, but yet be said nothing until the return, a short time after of the young man who had caused tuo trouble After his return he entered the establishment of the aggrieved party, when the letter was pro, duced, and he was asked concerning i,ts au thenticity, lie replied that he wrote it, and re iterated the sentiments therein contained, lie was then ordered to quit the premises. lie went outside of the door asd repeated some very insulting language, whereupon the other party went out, whn a skirtni ensued, which re suited in the author of the mischief getting one Soger bitten nearly off, his eyes nenrly gouged from bis head, and used up generally. Wouldn't pay. Theso days of woman's rights (all forth . the ingenuity of the tnaki popu" Ration, in various ways, to test and see who are, and who are not in favor of that princi ple. One device, rather amusing in itself, yet -rery effective, has been hit upon by some of our young men about town. We noticed in the Post Office window three packages, whose deli cate proportions unmistakably indicated them to be Valentines, directed to as many of our Village beauties, which unfortunately did' not rnrrv the rcauisite " stamps" to take them w j through, and they were doomed to be thrust in $be window; and marked "held for postage." Koiloubi, the ieen sensibilities of the Post master w.cre, shocked at being compelled to Submit these tender epistles, freighted with jentinlent, and besring the pure outpourings of love, to the careless gaze and lieartlcss' jibes and jeers of the public, yet it is money makes the letters go. Our Devil says fee. would pay the charges on them, if tbo . fair consignees would let him read the content?, but as he is too tasbful to make the " proposition," we s"p pose they will have to work their way. 0, Say ! , The very place to get your dresses according, to the latest pattern, and your roil- linery done up in style, is at Mrs. A. Mr. Nicklin is too well known here to need any recommendation from us. His work here tofore speaks for itself, and all that is needed is for us to announce his coining Highway Commissioners. Last Mon day the Indians held an election, chose a Sher iff , Justices of the Peace aud other officer, in lieu of their Chiefs. They have adopted the marriage ceremony of the whites, and are fast yielding up their customs to those of civilisation. Salem, Otegon, Jan.. 26th, 1872 48md THIS I!AIH;r. RULE. THE ENFORCEMENT Op THIS UNP0P ular rule at the late Agricultural Fair, although a source of groat antioyanoo to visit ors and of vexation- to Marshals, was not en tirely barren of good results, especially to tho people of this vicinity -who ore sagacious enough to profit by tbeTacts developed. It seems that in ejecting parties violating the rule, the Marshals found great difficulty in some caHcs by reason of the clothing of the offenders giving way, whilo others more roughly bandied were removed from the ground with out the least injury to their , clofhing. This mystery was solved by the Marshals when they found on investigation, that the clothing which stood firm under the sturdy grip of tho officers was purchased (with the exception of ono velvet suit)at thestoreof Mnrphy & Croas man, in the bank building, corner of State and, Commercial st., Salem, where a good supply of the ame kind of clothing is always on band together with a full assortment of fashionable bats and gents' furu tailing .goods. r 33tf.
