The creek here was at the highest stage which it has reached this season, on Friday xright last. On Satnrday, in the roa4 below CoL Neemith's, the wat was so deep as to be Almost impassable, W saw our young friend,' Scott Riggs, of Salt Creek, in town on Tuesday, the first time cine his marriage. His honors seem to set asy upon bicn, and, judging from indications w would think everything with him was lovely. We had a call on Tuesday from our young friend. M. M. Ellis, of La Clede. Knowing the advan tage of the maunfacturing interests in building up a town permanently, we feel doubly anxious to havo this matter pushed forward. The friends of Rev. J. James and his worthy family paid them a friendly visit on Monday, evening, and presented their compliments in the shape of small change, eatables and numer ous other acceptable articles. A good time was tho rosult. The family was taken entirely by surprise, but this only lent a zost to the oc casion. All seemed to enjoy themselves, and none more than the host and hostess. After enjoying thein.solves to their hearts' content the company separated with many good wishes for the welfare of the good Pastor and his family. Whittlings. We should judge so, as our d 1 has boen mingliug pretty freely in that element during tho week. We opiue, however, that be is not seeking 44 whom he may devour," but to whom, of the fair sex, he can pay his devoirs. Read the compliments of Rev. J. James and lady to the public in another column. The property for merly owned by A. N. Cochran, in this place, was sold last Saturday for taxes. Phick Personified. An old gentleman cauie into town on Thursday in a way that attracted the attention of everybody who chanced to be on the street. His turnout consisted of a box nailed to a round stick, upon either end ot which was a wheel about three feet in diameter, made of inch plank. To the round stick, whieh answered the purpose of an axle, was fastened two sticks, extending forward, to answer the purpose of shafts. Across the front end of these thills was a bar used to put the breast against to propel the machine. Within this ve hicle was a knitting machine, as well as the baggage of the traveler. He proved to be an itinerant manufacturer traveling over th coun try picking up jobs of knitting wherever he could fin 1 them. He came from tho East to California, and last September became to Am ity, Yamhill county, having become disgusted with theJxrt, dry weather f California. He ha,s worked in and around Amity until he concluded to come to Dallas. Through the mud, over the steep hill, and acrosi the waters which have been so high as to stop the mails, came thi in vincible veteran, and here he is ready for the patronage of the public. Surely, otue of the hardy spirit of our forefathers mill remain?, and "although many would jcct at the folly of this old gentleman in traveling through the mud ot Oregon engaged in trnch Ini.-ines., yet all must admit that the pluck and energy exhibited by him, is in striking contrast to the 44 I ran't" style of many wh would call ,hiui a f'u4 and laugh M Iws fJ!y. It seems that in ejecting parties violating the rule, the Marshals found groat difficulty in gome cases by reason of tho clothing of the offenders giving way, while others more roughly bandied were removed from the ground with out the least injury to their clothing. This mystery was solved by the Marshals when they found on investigation, that tho clothing which stood firm under tho sturdy grip of the officers was purchased (with the exception of one velvet suit)at the.store of Murphy & Croaa man, in the bank building corner of State and Commercial St., Salem, where a good supply of the tame kind of clothing is always on band, together with a full assortment ol fashionable tutaandfieaU' furnishing goods. ajtf, ir?t jl aj ttfa-7 SSS' . !
