Prof, James, of the Portland Commercial College, has beeu having a merry Christmas among his friends here during tfce week. Christmas was celebrated in the " old fash ioned way" by -some of our people. Two regu lar fisticuffs took Jlace during th festivities here. The Christmas Tree which was to have been in the Court House Monday " wilted j" but there were several private trees in town, and we presume oar little folks got their coveted Christmas gifts. ; ' Concert. The Sabbath Schools of this place ha I .an interesting concert at the Christian Church last Sunday afternoon. Prof. Rutan assisted in the singing, and the exercises were highly creditable to all concerned. Saddle Trees. The card of C. n. Cox, in another column, evidences that he has an eye to business, and knows how to secure it. We opine also that ho knows how t- do what he advertises, and recommend him to the public. Prof. James, of the Portland Commercial College, called at our oflSce on Tuesday, during our absence. Wo regret not being at home, and hope the Professor will not turn the cold jhoulder to us, but will call ajain the rst opportunity. The snow still lingers, and the storm during the past week has been quite severe. Feed is .scarce; and if the cold, stormy weather con tinues, those who have large amounts of stock and but little feed, will be apt to suffer consid erable loss. The Ball at the Court House on Monday night proved a decided success. There were About fifty couples present. All danced to their utmost desire, regaled themselves heartily upon the " goodies" provided for them at the supper table, and went home sleepy and well satisfied. Woman' Pacific Coant Journal. Wo are informed that James Jackson was taken before Justice Simpson, of Sheridan, Yamhill County, last Wednesday, and bound in the sum of $500 to keep the peace. It seems that Jackson, who has been out of the Peni tentiary but a short time, has been living since his release with Alfred Wilson, near Sheridan. Of late ho has been drinking a great deal, and in his fits of drunkenness would go to Wilson's house and abute both Wilson and his family. The legitimate result of his actions has brought him where he is. It can be summed ur. in two words Bad Whisky. Temperance Lecture. Mrs. Carrie F. Young gave an interesting and instructive lecture at the M. E. Church on Thursday evening to a good audience. We have not space to refer in detail to the subject mattor of the discourse. She commenced by showing that tho druukard was not " free and equal" to the extent that sober men were that tho loss of life and pro perty was greater from this than any other eause, and that civil, political and religious liberty were endangered by the use of alco holic stimulants. Her arguments in favor of parents furnishing rational amusements at home to 'keep children from going elsewhere to obtain them, wero strong and to the point. Her remarks were enlivened by anecdotes, amusing and pertinent to the point. She in tends canvassing tho valley thoroughly during tho winter. Stab Spanci.fd Banner. TnE ENFORCEMENT OF THIS UNPOP ular rule at the late Agricultural Fair, although a source of great annoyance to visit ors and of vexation to Marshals, was not en tirely barren of good results, especially to the people of this vicinity who are sagacious enough to profit by the facts developed. It seems that in ejecting parties violating the rule, the Marshals found great difficulty in some cases by reason of the clothing of the offenders giving way, while others more roughly handled were removed from the ground with out the least injury to their clothing. This mystery was solved by the Marshals when they found on investigation, that the clothing which stood firm under the sturdy grip of the officers was purchased (with the exception of one velvet suitjat tbestoreof Mnrphy A Croas man, in the bank building, corner of State and Commercial st., Salem, where a good supply of the ame kind of clothing is always on hand, together with a full assortment of fashionable hats and gents' famishing goods. 33 tf. VEGETABLE SICILIAN HAIR RENEWEIt Every year increases the popularity of this valuable Hair Preparation ; whieli is due to merit alone. We can assure our old patrons that it is kept fully up to its -high standard; and it is the only reliable and perfected prep aration for restoring Gray or Faded Hair to its youthful color, making it soft, lustrous, and silken. The scalp, by its use, becomes white and clean. It removes all eruptions and dandruff, and, by its tonic properties, prevents the hair from falling out, as it stimu lates and nourishes the hair-glands. By its use, the hair grows thicker and stronger. In baldness, it restores tho capillary glands to their normal vigor, and will create a new giwvth, except in extreme old age. It is the most economical Hair Dressing ever used, as it requires fewer applications, and gives the hair a splendid, glossy. ap pearance. A. A.
