Stratton, of Salein, agent of the Willamette University will hold service at tho M. E. Church, to-morrow, at 11 o'clock and in Jthe evening. Two sets of harness were stolen from the .stable of George Brown, living four miles north of town, last Saturday night. A friend stopped over night, and in the morning, when they .went to harness up, the harness was missing. Mr. Richard Lucas, who lived near Eola, was found dead in his bed last Sunday m rnmg. He was a man well advanced in years, and had been troubled with fits of apoplexy for somo time, which is supposed to have been the cause of his death. He has been a resident of Polk County for some years, and was regarded as a good citizen. Washington County Fair. We acknowledge the receipt of " complimentary" to atterd the above-named exhibition next week. Owing to a pressure of business we must beg to be ex cused. The Washington Fair always ranks among the first in the State, and we speak for them a good time and a general attendance. That Discusiion. In another column will be found a short dissertation upon the proposition of Prof. Chaney, that Abraham was a planet. This is really of but little importance com pared with the fact that Murphy k Croasnan are able to plan it so as to furnish the best of gent's wear at the lowest rates. Changes are constantly going on among our .population. Several families have left. our county during the week for the eastern portion of the State, and others have returned. Among .the latter we are pleased to mention Mr. Geo. Eillers, formerly a resident of Polk County, but who has for ome months been lining in Mon tana. We understand he is willing to settle in Webfoot, and Jet others leave if they choose. Whittling. William Brown is receiving , accessions to his stock at the Brick. Dr. Hoi ,man, a dentist from Portland has been in town during the week. Another building from Ellendal has been brought down, to occupy a position below town. Several of our citizens were out hunting this week, but killed nothing. We heard one of tbem say that hunting with houndshad spoiled his fun, as his game was etUl hunting. Mr. E. L. Delashmutt is always determined to keep up with his neighbors. He laid upon our table the other day several fine apples of the Talpabockirig .variety, the largest we hare seen. One was weighed and found to balance one pound and a quarter. " Ed." is tho one who some time since proffered to run hunting dogs with a Salem party. He claims he has the fastest dogs in the State, and he always aims in everything to "keep op with the bounds." Everytbing.in our neighboring town of Inde pendence seems to be lively, taring a visit there this week we bad a short chat with onr legal friend Daly, who ia at present "shooting the young ideas" in the district school there. The '"tinner" referred toby a correspondent some time since has left. The "saddler," however," yet remains, and the "Belt" is, or eems to be, still in the market. After having .our horse fed by Jerry, who "knows how it is himself," and getting a good square meal with friend Whiteon, who evidently knows how to keep a hotel, we were well prepared for travel, with many good wishes for our neighbors. The "Overland." Since the great confiag ration in Chicago, everybody is anxious to assist the sufferers as much and as soon as possible. This is not only kind but just. In order to Accomplish tbif the Overland Store in Salem offer a magnificent stock of goods at ruinously low prices. Mr. Adamson, one of Jbe proprietors and gentlemanly fcusjneis man ager of the concern, js ever ready to wait upon customers ; and if be does not please the most astidious, both in hi manners and in the style, quality and price of the commodities ho offers, we shall be eompelled to admit that we have mbtsed our guess. Examine their adrer jUsement in another column, and then give them a call to prove what they say, and our jjord for it you will not regret it. Telegraphic Summary. London, October 17. Sea Air Who is Benefitted by It. Sea air often thirds exercises most beneficial effects, where sea bathing would ho equally injurious. That a residence at the seaside is generally healthy can not be doubted, from tho fact that even during tho most sultry heat of summer, the air is con stantly in motion, jit is moreover free from fogs and vapor, and the salt with which the uir is impregnated greatly tend- to lend tone to the system. It is particularly beneficial in cases of dys pepsia, of consumption and scrofula, in intense suscep'ibility evinced by hysteria and such like nervous affections disarrangement of the bronchial organs, dyspepsia and like oomplaints which are much more rare on the sea coast in the inland part of the -country. The exil erating influence of the sea air is proved that those who indulge in extra quantities of wine and spirits for jlhe purpose of maintaining a comfortable condition of constitutional force for the discharge of business, are able to dis pense with the same when at the sea side, the excitement produced by fer mented liquors being compensated by increased appetite, induced by the ex tra amount of air and exercise taken. Tho rosy, healthy appearance of the face after a sea sojourn is greatly attri butable to particles of salt adhering to the skin and exeiting to action the cap illary blood vessels and cutaneous nerves In a word, feebleness of the constitu tion and an impaired state of health aro generally indicated by pallor and flab biness, upon which condition of the salt water exercises more influence than even change of temperature, as it acts powei fully upon the mus.'ular fiber. -- The buttrr and cheese Factories of Xew York State number 944, and are supplied daily with milk from 249,000 cows. In the Bevcn States of Ohio, Illinois, Wisconsin, Vermont, Massa chusetts, Michigan and Pennsylvania, there are 25S factories, supplied daily with milk from 2,400 cows. It is esti mated, however, that there are in the United States 1,300. butter aud cheese factories, supplied with the milk of ;J00,00 cows, and producing about 100,000,000 pounds of cheese and the same number of gallons of milk Every 3,000 cows, therefore, yield every year a million pound of cheese, valued, it is stated at 8140,000, so that each cow yields 333 pounds of cheese, valued at S47. The export of American cheese to Great Britain in 18;:, amounted to 1,000,000 pounds, and this quantity in 1S70 had increased to 07,000,000 pounds, valued at S,000,000. AI1R All. M A I'LVMIT. And now comes Prof. Chaney and proclaim!! to all "Webfoot" and the people thereof, that he has the documents wherewith to prove that Abraham, the old patriarch, Sarah's lord and Hagar's husband, ad interim, the paternal ancestor of I.aar, the founder of a great nation, in whose capacious bojom the weary hope to find rest, was after all nothing but a planet, and that Sarah, the mother of Isaac, was but a twinkling star What cherished tradition will be attacked , next ? What fa'-t wiil remain unquestioned by these restless spirits ? In view of thin uncertainty, it is some relief to gentle men deeiritig to be fashionably drvssed, to know it to be a fact, no lomjer' in i(,'f,utf, that tho finest dres suits, the most stylbh hats and caps and the latct noveltk-s in furnishing poods are to bo found at Murphy A Croastuan's at the Bank Building, corner of State and Commercial street, Salem. In other words, as many applications must be tiled as there arc distinct features of invention. During the year ending June .'0th, 1871, 107,141 passengers arrived at the port of New York From foreign coun tries, of which number 101,105 were actually immigrants. Forty Years' Experience have tested the virtues of Dr. Witnr' llalnnm of Wild Cherry, and the result is that it is the best rem edy extant for pulmonary and lung diseases, enbracing a whole range from a alight cold to a settled consumption.
