2Uu rrgcn JUpubtican. DALLAS, SATURDAY, AtTO. 19. I,OVE SONG. "Do I still love the?" Ask the bee, If he still loved the flower : And of the flower demand if she Loves sunshine and the shower ; And ask the bird if he still loves The joy that summer brings Soft airs, blue skies, and leafy graves, That listen while he sings, If bee, and flower, and bird Fay "Nay," Then my leva's falso and fled away. u Why do I love the ?" Asks the soa . Why it adores the moon ; And ask the queenly rose why she Dotes on the month of June ; And ask the sun-flower why she turns , Her bosom to the sun. And all the dark night fondly yearn For her most cherished one. If sun-flower rose and sea reply : - "We do not know," no more know I. Ah ! who the secret s urcecan tell Of love that long endures ? The charm is unendurable That draws mv soul to yours. I only know that still my love Is centered all in you, As constant as these stars above, And pure as morning dew ! Enough, though hid the cause may be, If I love you and you love mo. To Live or to Die. Is it better to live, or to die ? Is it better to struggle or sleep ? Is it better to lie with folded hands, Or live on for years to weep ? It is better to live than to die ; It is better to struggle than sleep; For we learn the notes that angels sing, Whenever slu makes us weep. When the toil and battle aroover ; When the crown is fairly won ; Then a voice speaks up in Heaven, "Oh ! faithful oue, well done !" FACTS IN HUMAN LIFE. The number of lauyuagca spoken in the world is 3,004. The inhabitants of the globe profess more than 1,000 dif ferent religious. The number ot meu is about equal to the number of wuuieru The average ot human life is about thirty three years. One quarter die previous to the age of seven years, one half before seventeen, and thoc who pass this age enjoy a felicity refused to one half of the human species. Tu every thousaud persons, one readies a hundred years of life; to every one hundred, only six reach the age of sixty five: and uot monj than oue in live hundred lives to eighty yeais of age. There are on earth 1,000,000,000 inhabitants, and of these die every year, 91,8-1 every d;iy, ,7o0 every hour, and sixty every minute, or one every .second. The loses are ub-mt balanced by an equal number of births The married are' lunger lived than the single, and above all, those who ob- j serve a sober industrial conduct. Tall men live longer than short unci. Women have more chances of life in their favor previous to being fifty years of age than men, but very few afterwards. The number of marriages is in the proportion of seventy five to every thousand individuals. Marriages are more frequently after the equi noxes j that is, during the months of June and December. Those born in spring are generally more robust than others. Births and deaths are more frequent by night than by day. The number of men capable of bearing arms is calculated at one fourth of the population. A Great Farmer's Maxims. The successful life of Mr. Jacob Strawn, the prince of American farmers, is arttributed to the close observance of the following maxims, originated by himself: When you wake up do not roll over but roll out. It will give you time to ditch all your sloughs, break them, harrow them, and sow timothy and red clover. One bushel of clover to two bushels of timothy is enough. Make your fencing high and strong, so that it will keep cattle and pigs out. If you have brush, make your lots secure, and keep your hogs from your com; for if the corn is kept, they will eat it better than if it was riot. 13e sure to get your hands abed by 8 o'clockThey will rise early by force of circumstances. Pay a hand if he is a poor hand, all you promise him j if be is a 'good hand pay him a little more ; it will encourage him to do still tetter. Always feed your hands as well as you do yourself, for the laboring men are the bone and sinew of the laud, and ought to be well treated. I am 6atified that getting up early, in dustry and regular habits' are the best medicine ever prescribed for health. When rainy, bad weather comes, so that you can't workjout of doors, cut, split and haul your wood. . Make your racks, fix your fence or a gate that is off its hinges, or weath er-board your barn where the wind has blown the siding off, or patch the roof of your barn or house. Study your interests closely, and do notspeadany time in electing Presi dents, Senators, and other small officers, , or talking of hard times when spending your time in whitling store boxes, etc Take your time and make calcula tions. Von t do things in a hurry, but do them at the right timp, and keep your mind as well as your body employ ed, Subscribe for the Republican. Fads and Fancies. Ready money Quicksilver. It is said when Urigham Young was asked which son he had at West Point, the conundrum so staggered him that he was obliged to refer to the family record to solve it. "Do they miss mc at home ?" is not much sung in that family. A chary old Yankee gentleman trav. eling out West got a seat beside his wife in a crowded railway carriage, by requesting the young man who sat by her to "please watch that woman while he got into another carriage, as she had fits."
