A strong will, a patient temper, nmi so-called cninmon feuse, when unittd in one individual, arc as ;ood as a fortune to their possessor The former is neces- sary to prompt a person to grapple with great enterprises, and to under- take vast achievements ; the second to enable -him t6 adhere to PurP s?-1 though fortune tiny at tims he 'w' ' in- upon his efforts and apparently re- tarding his progress; i.nd the latter is indispensably necessary to jrnile in the many, and intricate channels of business which are constantly opening to the advantage of those who have the mini; sites to tfnuLHxilrtMii to undertake the preat schemes of life, and conduct them to their own advantage and the material interest of the wt.rM at large, j Barring untoward accidents, the man endowed with these qtiilities who starts on his care r with a determina tion to reach a desirable position, des reach it. It is not advisable, however, to depend upen others; learn se'f-reli ance; be prepared to withstand the jostliDgs which are sure to be met with in the bus nes of life, and work perse veringly for the accomplishment of any cherished and legitimate project. Who ever pursues this course will soon be ! marked out as a person bound to suc ceed; and these principles, if adhered to, will ensure success. Persons mark ed by society as rising tin n have only themselves to blame if they don't rise Unless they do something to retard their own progress, and kick over their own dish, their upward march is unim peded, and their success is certain. From the Sa'eui correspondent of the Oregoaiaa we glean the following statement of the diflieulty between the j Editor of the Statesman and the Peni tcntiary Supei intend nt : It seems that Ch.rke was goini down street at half past three, and when across the street from Hash's Hank, Watkinds came on him fro in i store without bring seen, and struck him with a rawhide, knocking his hat down over hi eye" and disarranging Ids spec taehssOthat he couldn't see. but he turned on his assaila.it with a pocket knife got the rawhide away from him, and ran him off - the side walk ; and while he was pushing his hat up an I straightening his glasses, Watkinds, who was out in the street out of reach, drew his revolver (r avy -ize, I hear). Everybody ran, and Clnke trade a dash for the store door. Watkinds fired at. him as he entered, aud'hit the door jamb. Clarke stepped between the doors, out of fire, as he supposed, arid Watkinds fired through the craek. only a f t w feet of) and the ball, after pass-, ing through several thicknesses of oil cloth, struck Claike fairk in the back, on a suspender strap, and only caused a bad bi uise. He stepped out io front of the other door nnd raid he was shot, not knowing the ball had mt penetrat ed. Watkinds then shot at him closely, .i:d misi-ed, and fired again bef ro he Was arrested. Great excitement prevails lu re, and lion h effort will be In ide to save Wat kinds harmless. Eminent counsel of both parties of politics will be engaged on both sides, and the citizens here are determined to have the matter put through. Hen. Hayden w ill assist the prosecution.' Ho showed good pluck, and had he possessed a good knife, a first-class J) mociatic funeral would now be on hand." Subscribe for the IlsptmLKUj j CHI: Vl TITLKS. The granting of cheap titles has be come so common as to elicit considerable comment from the press of the country. The Springfield (Maps.) Republican gives the following in regard to the ease with which they may be obtained both at home and abroad. Patents of nobil ity in some European countries are as cheap as m much patent leather in this, and are disposed of to leather head customers. In Italy, it is said, that the title of Count can be procured for a comparatively insignificant sum ; and a class of nobility of tint country goes by the name of " Twelve Dollar Counts." " It is well known that they have an establishment in Pennsylvania which will furnish uny kind of a degree, whether doctor of laws or doctor of medicine, on short notice and at a reasonable price. But if a man ii:h to get somethintr really worth having in the shape of a handle to his name, and the social position such a handle is supposed to bring', he ouuht to go or send to Europe and get the titled? baron, which some of the petty tier man peoplo podd'e out at one hut died t balers- a head, and cheap enough it is. to. In solemn earnestness we appeal to the liberty loving hosts, who, in 18GI rallied to the defense and preservation of the Union, to cordiaUv and earnestly unite and settle the great issues so abso lutely and so unchangeably that treason and rebellion may never more seek lodging io our nation.
