Mr. S. is well known here as a bluck emith, jitid it only needs to .be known that he bos opened his shop to insure to him a good share of puV.ic patronage. New Advertisement. Jerry Gal wick, of In- dependence, informs the public that be can grooin a gent'.etnan's horse, or furcbh one already groomed, at any time, and on satisfac tory terms. We call the attention of th se wishing wapn or blacksmith's work done in Salem to he establishment of Underwood, Baxter & Ci . Their ad ver.ti3 mentis insanthir column, a? d we feel assured that thir wurk will give satisfaction. Ilotel. The Dallas Hotel has opened under more promising auspices, and we take pleasure iu calling the attention of the puUie t; thjU fact. Anyone calling there will ba sure to get a ''square meal," comfortable quarters, and will go away benefitted for having called. Wheat in considerable quantities is being hauled to market now that grain is commanding a good pri-ie. . Last Monday, in a short drive through the country, we saw six four-horse teams, and several two-hone- wagons loaded with wheat for Lincoln. Agricultural Implements of all kinds, as cheap as the cheapest, and as good as the best, can be fouDd at It. M. Wade's Commercial Street, Salem. From his advertisement in to day's issue, it will bo seen that he has a full supply cf all kinds of machinery required by the agriculturist. We have received from A. L. Bancroft fc Co. of ban Francisco, several fine engravings, among which is " Christ Blessing Little Chil dren;" "The Angel's Whisper," and several others. Anyone wishing an engraving which will be a fine ornament to any drawing-room, can be accommodated by calling at this ofBce. We were shown the other day br Mr. Kin eaid, at the fhop of Richardson Co., a ma chine tor stoving wagon and buggy tires, which Is the simplest, and at the same time the most efficatjous, of any we have seen in that line. It consists of two simple clamps fastened to a scantling six inches square and about five feet long. One of the clamps is movable, and works by a lever. The whole apparatus is simple and convenient, and takes up no room in the shop, being fastened to the wall by bolts. Mr. K. has a patent on it, and has the machines for sale. While other townin the Stale are boasting fine rise of real estate, we, without any rail road, and perhaps little prospect of ever having one, have considerable occasion to brag as well as the rest; several pieces of town property and others in the adjacent neighbourhood have changed hands at good figures. We are happy to chronicle the fact that the attention of strangers is being drawn towards our beautiful locality, and numbers are locating. here. Those having pioperty for sale would work for their own interest by advertising the same, so that strangers coming in will know where to find juch as they want. A Lady's Endorsement. Madame E , the acknowledged leadei of the most refined and fashionable society in the city of New York, speaks of Mcrrat A Lahmas's Florida Water in the following highly complimentary manner via : "It has a fragrance as freeh as the odor lrora blooming flower and imparts tO the bath a delightful bouyancy. I use it on the toilet table and the handkerchief to the exclusion of all other per fumes." ,BwJerB houM lways ask for the Florida Water prepared by Lanman and Kemp, ft- v Hit. Telegraphic Summary. Versailles, May 22. -The Com. rnune troops rallied at Montmatre and Hotel de Ville and approaches defend ed by barricades. Much serious fight ing took place which resulted in the Versaillisfs troops occupying three fourths of the city. ,, ; A conflagration is raging near the Tuvalides, and the Insurgent battery on Monttuatre is cannon tdiug the city. L'Amirault telegraphs that everything is satisfactory, although fighting may coutinuc for several hours. The city is absolutely won. Many of the Com mune leaders were, taken, and there were some awful massacres. In the Assembly today, Thiers made a congratulatory speech on the great success of the Government arms and said he did not expect an en trance into Paris for three or four days and ravc an account in detail of move wents on Sunday, which; terminated no victoriously. He announced that the Government has determined to visit with rigorous punishment, most crimi nal insurgents. Bills have been introduced to restore Chapel Expiation and the column iu Place Vendome the latter to be sur mounted by a statute of Franco. A vote of thanks to Thiers and the p.rrny was adopted by acclamation. Loudon, May 22. A dispatch dated outside of Paris, Monday eveniug says the insolation of the city continues. Fires are raging inUe, and a dense smoke overhangs Montmatre. Fre quent explosions are heard The sound o "cannons and musketry continues. It is said the Prussians are occupy ing Via'ennes. The Prussian outposts have received strict orders to drive back all insur gents attempting to pass their lines. A Commune General, seeking to escape from Paris, had been turned back by the Ger.naus. The headquarters of the Prince of Saxony will chortly be removed from Marency to Cuinpcgne. Some of the guard return to Germany by the eud of the present week. London, May 22. Tn the IIou-e of Lords to-night it was a-keJ if, in view of the evident aversion of Canadians to the Treaty of Washing ton, the Government iuU'ndcd to press ratification belore " the twelfth of June. Karl LauIerJa'e quoted the rep n by the Atl iuttc cable of Senator S nn t.er's speech denouncing the treaty as a peace treasure and r'nac a ltd the idea of au apology from Kug'and, and de clared site had never made any. Eirl Granville Fireign Secretary) declined to answer Earl Lauderdale ; if was ino M'vc lient now to discuss the terms of treaty, lie sympathized as little with Sumner as with Lord Laud erdile. The treaty is not a'treaty un til ratified. It lug already been pub lished in the United States, for the Ameiican Senate had began investiga tion into mean by which it was obtain ed for public ition ; hence, should it be submitted to Parliament, it was impos sible to anticipate a decision of the Sen ate. , Lord Granville declined to pledge the Government to a refusal to ratify the treaty before June 15th, simply because notice has been given of an intention N raise a discussion oo it in Parliament: He fore ratifications arc exchanged it is understood the Canadian Parliament is to be consulted. Earl Iluel insisted on his demand that opportunity bo jxiven for discuss sion as a ' Parliamentary prerogative Earl de Grey said diplomacy was impossible if it had to be submitted to Parliament before ratification. It was the prerogative or the Crown to con clude treaties on its own motion. Earl Granville stated the official copy of the treaty was only received by the Government yesterday. It was j now printing and would be submitted on Tuesday. Other official documents will be withheld pen ling tdo debate in the Senate of the United States. New York, May 22. A Paris dispatch says the city is in tremendous commotion. From the windows in the west front of the Tuilsries the scene of conflict can be distictly seen. An immense body of Commune troops have concentrated around the Hotel de Ville, having retreated from the outskirts. The collapse of the Comtnuue is im minent. ' Paris, May 22. AU is over. Sev enty thousand Versa. UUta have enter ed, and more are now coming They marched in all night through -ix gates, meeting with slight resistance. Barri cades were not defended, and no mine, exploded. The Versaillists are now moving upon the Ilotel de Ville, where the Commune will make a last stand. The Versaillists behaved splendidly committing no excesses. The Versaillists army have occupied Paris, .with headquarters at the new Opera House. , Cissey's headqaartera are on the south side of the Seine at Ecolo Mtli- taire. - There was a great explosion this forenoon near Esplanade ot Inva lidca. XOVING HOME. . Nothing appears more beautiful in human experience than the reciprocal affection of parent and children, especi ally after the latter have attained ma turity, and perhaps formed new rela tions in life. To see the loving daugh ter, after she has become a wife and mother, visit the parental home, and bestow that affection upon her parents that tender affection which has not been diminished by her new relations, is noble and admirable in the extreme. Would that all children realized the joy they might create in the bosoms of their parents by keeping alive that flame of filial affection which is so easily cultivated, and lose no opportunity of making it manifest in little acts of lovo and gentleness, even after they may have become parents themselves. The child never grows old to a fond parent ; it is always the same dear child, and more especially when it takes the pains to cultivate a spirit of love aud confi dence. Strang: Phenomenon. The vil lage of Uokah, Minn., which is five miles west of this city, has been, the scene of a startling phenomenon this week. It seem -that the citizens in Ilokah are moviug their cemetery, and in taking up the bodies for re interment, the side of a colli u fell out, and exposed the remains of a young lady named Delia Parker, who died and was buried some 13 years ago, aged 17, and we have it from eye witnesses that her form was as perfect and she as natural looking as the day djc was buried. Her arms, body aud-brcast were thump ed with a tn dU t and sounded like and resembled solid stone. The body is prob ably petrified, as it is a limestone coun try.; Her relatives immediately rebur ied her. Other bodies were found that rescmbh d this one in petrcfrction, but no examinations were made. We do nut rurtke this as a sensition item, bu a the truth. We have read of latere ve ra 1 si m liar i n s ta n ces. Lu C osse Democrat. Dallas; May 21, 1871. HrN O. B. Johnson, Salem. Sir: The proposition you made to T. G.
