The weather for .the past week has been a fair sample of wvbfoot winter rain almost incessantly. This will have a beneficial effect on late sown grain, and will injure an abun dant harvest, both of grain and grass. An unusually large amount of grain has been sowu, and the prospects cow, with the almost entire failure ot crop? in California, are that th3 farmers in Oregon will to well remunerated for their labors. - Woolen Factory. Matters are assuming a more business-like aypect concerning the above-named establishment, and a proposition will be-made in due season to the citizens of Dallas for building here instead of re-building at Ellendale. The question should, be tho roughly canvassed by our citizens, and all inducements held out for its establishment here, as there is nothing which more perma nently . bentfits a town than well-established manufactories. A Severe Accident. Mr. W. II. Teal, of this place, met with a painful accident last Tues day, while running a planing machine. lie was standing on the fight band side of the table, and placing his left hand on the opposite edge, reached over to get an oil can. His hand wad closer to the knives than he supposed, and as he reached over the table, the thumb of his left hand came in contact with one of the knives, and was immediately severed close to the hai.d. This will prevent him from per forming any work for some time, but as he has workmen employed in his shop, it will not retard the progress of his business. The Gardens of Luxemburg are vlosfd to the public, and are occupied by a military force in anticipation of a rLsing on the part of the populace. M. lieslay, called the - lather of the Commune, retires from membership of that body because the residence of Thiers has been despoiled. Viscount Godrich, and Mr. Chremer of the Joint High commission, left here Saturday for fean Francisco. London, May. 15. In the House of 1 Common to-night V iscount Eufield, Under Set retary of Foreign affairs, said the Government was not prepared to state the exact terms of the treaty of Washington, as a copy of the docu merit has not yet been received. Disraeli therefore postponed putting the question to the Government in. re lation thereto, of which he had previ ously given notice. Gladstone stated that the Govern ment was unable to anticipate the ex act time of the arrival of the treaty, but promised that it should instantly be submitted to Parliament. In the House of Lords, Earl Ilussel gave notice of. intention to move an addrecis to the Queen against sanctioning the ratification of the Alabaman treaty, A dispatch from Berlin gives some additional particdlaars of the the treaty of peace just negotiated at Frankfert. The French aro to restore all ships captured during the war or to refund their value in cases where the vessels have been sold. The navigation treaty of 18G2 is to be manifested. 'iJ-J tfnle fovo is supposed to nave two maiu characteristics- one that it never runs smoothly to the haven of. matrimo nial felicity, and anotaer that it is quite irrepressible, or, as the old adage phrases it, "love laughs at locksmiths. Among the arrivals on the New Orleaus steamer a day of two since, was a fair ' and win some lady, who had! eloped (from j her lover, parient, not with her lover, but with his alter ego who like i a good soul had come to the lovers' assistance when greatly needed, and was in that respect a friend indeed. The State of affairs a few days since, was just about this : The gentleman was in Galveston, and his business matters were io such a condition that he could neither safely or honorably leave them. Tho lady was in New Orleans and well they were just for each other, while the old folks severely told them that they could not think of such a thing. Well, the young folks did, atid the more they thought about each other, the more they kept doing it. tillat last, for fear of accidents a trusty friend went over, established a communication within the enemy's lines, made a raid, and bore off triumphantly the coveted prize, and away they sped "over the water and over the lea," to if not to Charley to Galvebton, where the expectant bridegroom was standing on the wharf, straining his eyes to sight the steamer that brought his blushing, weeping, but true and teuder bride. Of the joyful meeting, and happy wedding, it is not necessary to speak, but coutcnt ovrselvcs with wish ing them many happy days, and that the young bride may never retrret elop i igwilh a proxy Galvrs'on JTews. Courting in'Ciiurcu. A young gentleman h-ippened to sit at church in a pew adjoining one in which was a young lady, for whom he conceived a sudden and violent pasdou, and felt de sirous of entering courtship on the spot, but the place not suiting a formal decla ration, the exigency suggested the fol lowing plan : He politely handed hs neighbor a Bible open, with a pin stuck in the following verse: Second epistle of John, verse 7th "And now I be seech thee, ladv, not as if I wrote a new commandment unto you, but that which wu had from tho begiuing, that wo love one another." She returned it with the following: Second chapter; of ilulh, 10th, vtr?c -k'T hcu she fell 6n her face and boed herself to the 4 ground, and said unto hint, why have I grace in thine eyes, that thou sliouldH take no tice of me, seeing that I am a stranger!" He returned the book pointing to the 12th verse of the Second Kpistle of John ''having many things to say unto you, I would not write with paper aud ink: but I trust to come unto you, and speak face to face." From the above interview the marriago took place tho following week. Sitting, my friend, by tho evening fireside ; ftttiug iu your casy chair, at rest j and looking at the warm light on the rosy face of your little boy or girl, fitting on the rug before you, do you ever wonder what kind of remembrance those little ones will have of you, if God spares them to grow old ? Look into the years to come ; think of that smooth face lined and roughened ; that curly hair gray; that expression, now so bright and happy, grown cateworn and sad, aud you loug in your gravo. Of course, your son will not have for gotten you; he will sometimes think and speak of his father who is gone. What kind of rcmembrauce will ho have of you ? MA It IU ET. McMAHON ROBBINS.
