Photographic Gallery. Mr. Kincaid comes before the publie this week, and informs all that he is now prepared to take pictures for old and young. He has not adopted the motto of " Not for Joseph,'' but wonld as soon ac commodate him as " any other man.' A want, which our sister town of Buena Vista has long needed has at length been , filled, as will be seen by our advertising col umns. J. Linscy Hill, M. D, has located there, and people requiring the services of an experienced Doctor will no longer be com pelled to go from home to get one. The Si'itetman gays that in the case'of nart r. the MeMinnville Ditch Company, tried in the Circuit Court in Yamhill County at its last cession, Hart recoverel $:5,S00. This, wa are "iu formed by P. C. Sullivan, connsel for the Company, is an error. Hart sued the Com- - pany for about $7,000, and recovered ju4gme nt for $ 173 aud some cents. The store of Mr. Ray at Eola in this County, was entered by burglars on Monday night. They succeeded in opening the drawer, and secured about twelve or fifteen dollars in inoney, and decamped with it and a few ofocr articles of little value. All the stolen articles were found under an adjacent building. The thieves had not at last accounts been arrested1 Changes in the Mails. The time of de parture of the Salem Mail has been changed, ai that it leaves here Monday, Wednesday and Friday mornings, and returns in 'the evening, instead of coming in at noon as heretofore, and Lack in the afternoon. On and after May 1st the West Side mails will arrive at 4 a. in. and : 9 p. m., the calculation being to run from Portland to Corvallis without delay. Mr. John Poly, formerly a resident of Polk County, but now living at Atahnum, Yakima County, Washington Territory called on us on Monday. He reports very favorably of the Yakima country, its climate, productions, te. Wheat was sown in Ftbruary, and all kinds of crops were doing welL The weather bad been very pleasant during the winter, about four inches of snow, and the mercury at the lowest being two degrees below zero. At Atabnm, they hare three stores, blacksmith shop, Ao. a ad fair prospects for a flourishing town. Destructive Fire. The Ellendale Factory building and dye house were totally destroyed by fire, together with the whole of the machin ery, on Tuesday night. Loss about $20,000 ver the insurance. The fire is supposed to be he work of an incendiary, as there had been o one working in the establishment, and no fire about it since the first of March. There war no one in the building, nor near enough to it to be roused by the noise of the fire, and the destruction was unknown until early the next morning. We understand the Company de sign re-building soon. It will be a great loss to the Company at best, and we sincerely hope our citizens will deem it to their interest to assist in replacing the buildings, as the removal or destruction of such an institution from the County would be a serious drawback to our prosperity. ; Ukal Estate Sales. Mr. Lewis Flelschner, State, Tresurer, has recently purchased through the office of William Davidson, 64 Front street Portland, real estate, in the city proper, to the amount of $11,600. And sales nave also been effected through the same office, of lots, half blocks and blocks, located in the Couch Addition, amounting to thirty thousand dollars. A fcADY OP HIGH RANK. A careful inquiry J reduces the number of crevasses from which danger is antici pated to four -Poverty Point, Wallace's plantation, Bonnet Carre's, and Nara plantations. To-night three of these are reported under control, leaving the break at Bonnet Carre, the one to be combatted. Here the danger is great and imminent. The waters of the Mis sissippi are rushing through an opening 700 feet wide with a roaring souud au dible for miles, flowing through a chan nel 50 feet deep, far into vacant lands, and the levee is rapidly crumbling into the boiling waters. No efforts can now close the crevasse, and as soon as the flood has cut its way into the lake, the latter will overflow the whole rear por tion of New Orleans. The Latest news is that the Bonnet Carre crevasse is still extending 12 miles of the Jackson Railroad washed away. Two other crevasses, one at Point Maoion west of Baton Itouge and one on Mc Douough estate below the city, are re ported. . ; The Tribune Washington special says, the Decision of the Supreme Court in Legal Tender cases, will be announ ced in open court, Monday next. Opin ion will not be delivered until the De cember meeting of courts, in order that Judges may have time to perfect them. It is positively asserted that the decis ion will reverse the former decision by deciding the Legal Tender act consti tutional, and that contracts made prior to the war have been unfilled by payment of greenbacks. COlUtESrONbENCE. The following letter from a Pennsyl vanian to William Davidson, 'Esq., well known as a Real Estate Agent in Port land, shows the interest taken in Ore gou by the Eastern people : East Springfield, Erie Co., Pa., March 31st, 1871. Wm. Davidson, Esq. Dear Sir : Your letter of January 25th and pack ages were received in due time, and I have circulated them over the country, which will have, I believe, the desired effect. The eyes of the States are now being turned towards the Pacific slope, and many are looking to Oregon and Washington Territory for a future home, as soon as their business and property can be got in shape; and I think the Willamgtte Valley will re ceive a large portion. I think emigra tion will increase very rapidly for years to come. I have spent, since my arrival home, my entire time, aud much money in forwarding the iuterests of emigra tion, and have had, by letter and other wise, communications from hundreds of different men who design, as soon as practicable, to visit the Pacific, with the intention of making a home, and many of them will go forward this spring, summer and coming fall. Although I have organized a party of what is called the Keystone Colony, w"e have not made a full and complete or ganization. Something is lackiug to make full satisfaction. For instance, a part would wish to pay 35 to become a member of the Colony and have the benefit of reduced rates, extra baggage, freight, etc., and purchase their own land on tacir arrival. Others wish to pay to the treasurer the fae, about 8115, the initiation fee, 85, and S150 to purchase land within a large tract where a town could be located in the most convenient place and send forward men to locate, build accommodrtions to receive the Colony oil their arrival, etc. All the ways proposed have their ob jections. For instance, the treasurer would have to be a man known from New York to Iowa, not only as an hon est man, but a man responsible; and, for the locating committee, and especi ally the executive committee, it is uot so easy to find grd men who wish the responsibility. With this explanation you can ee at once that if the Colony should adopt the standard of admitting only those who were able to advance 270, it would cut out a large portion of the laboring c!as of young men who have not much more means than to pay their fare and fee, and have a little left to start on a homestead, who are the very bone and sinew of our country, aud who will eventually tell upon the weal or woe of the land. And on the other hand, if I form a Colony on the bus s of the organization above, without a location to go to, what can a po r or rich m!n do? It is like a leap in the dark. Now let us come to the point. Cm there be a company formed in the Willamette Valley, so that land cun be secured iu a lare body, with a viltage laid out in ils centre, aud so situated that the poor man can purchase Gov ernment land or railroad land. at a low price; especially for those who located first? Aud where we conld have a depot and post office at once? Where the poor but honest man could get a little time, and where the rich man could buy a rcis nable amount of land ? Where the climate is healthy and the water good ? Where all could enjoy the equable and delicious climate of your valley ? I believe the population of your State would rapidly increase by emigration from this State. I would join such a company, and perhaps bring out say twenty-five families or their representatives, and in the summer and fall another small party, and by another spring wo could get them going for ward in earnest. Are there men or companies in your State that would be glad to take hold . of this matter ? I have no large means, but will give a large amount of labor for its interest. I have several friends who propose visiting your State this spring some time in May and will give them let ters to you and others, and if they find the country as has been represented to them, they will select homes in your highly favored land. I am very -much pleased with the climate of Oregon, and desire a homo there. Please present this matter to somo of your business men Ben. Holladay, the Mayor of Portland, O. Humason and others, as it may be of much inter est to them. I will communicate with you soon. Yours truly, William Bond.
