Dallas "Literart SO CIETY. Hew the Scarlet Fever Is Spread. Th enormous morality from scarlet fever which appears io the Hegistrar General's mortality bills, is now a con stant and increasing quantity. It is assuming proportions which are alarm ing; not the less so, because they are largely increased by individual earless cess. It has always been a source of great mortality ; and, in the absence of ,aty means of checking its progress, such as we possess in vaccination for small pox and by attention to the water supply and drainage for cholera and fiome forms of pythoenio fever, it be comes the more necessary accurately to investigate the means by which it is spread. These may be summei np chief ly in a few words. It is spread by per sonal carlessness, by neglect, and by recklessness of individuals a to the public safety. Scarlet fever is propa gated from person to person by culpa ble ignorance and criminal neglect. Cleanliness and general 'sanitaryjregula tions are of use in mitigating the severity of the disease, but are no bur to its propagation. Let us take the ex perience of one London physician du ring the last week, and it will easily ex plain bow scarlet fever is now being spread. lie tells us that he has be come cognizant of the following cases during that time. Traveling by rail, be was requested not to put down the window, as a little boy in the car riage was not very well. The boy was on his way home from a school where the scarlet fever had broken out j and, on examiaing him, the eruption was ful ly evident. A clergyman brought into his room a lad, not to consult him about the lad, but inadvertently. lie was about to take him into the country. This lad had just recovered from scar let fever, and was in the istage of con valescence, shedding about those scales which are so highly infectious, and are enough to poison the whole population. His washer-woman had scarlet fever, io her family; he asscertaind that it was conveyed by the clothing of a scar let fever patient, sent to the wash by the friends without any caution. These are all acts of the most cupable and dangerous negligence. Scarlet fever is a most intensely and continuously conta gious disease. From the outset of the disease till the completion of the sub sequent process of peeling of skin, the patiefft, his clothing and discharges, and the light scales which are diffused in the atmosphere from his peeling surface skin, are pregnant with poison Not only should he be carefully isolated; not on ly should his clothing and all that comet - in contact, with him bccarefully and tho roughly disinfected; not only should his body be anointed, as Dr. -Hudd has re- AAM.mAfflflik1 Nffftl i-.il f f 1 I V 1 1 1 f tlirt . f fit 'I t VUIUUJCUurU vt i w-i ivs limit iuv ctvu diffusion of the epidermal scales but the ntmostcare should bo exercised by the persons attending him not to become carriers of this virulent and subtle poi jKn. To send to the laundress garments latul as those of Dejanira, to expose in a public carriage or a crowded waiting room the fertile sources of a deadly and volatile poison and terrible offences against the public safety. They are constantly and carelessly committed; and it is thus that scarlatina is- spread. Britith Medical Journal. Death's sewing mtchine The needlo fluu. Facts and Fancies. Minor items the births. Henry Dart a negro brother of some body, thought he was a pile driver, and dropped from a four-story window in Bos ton, head first to the sidewalk. The stone stood it, and Dart's rooms are to let. A curlish fellow refused to one of our hocllar king urchius his full fee, whereupon the latter exclaimed. " Go aLaig, old buffer; all the polish you've got is upon your shoes, and I gave you that " " Tiiis u'Uk is rather warm for such a cold morning," said a customer, the other day, to a milk-boy. 44 Yes, fath er put I tot, water in it, instead of cold, to keep it from freezing," was the sim ple but truthful reply. When a steady well-hehaved young rnau is seen shaking hands with a pump and bidding it an affectionate good night, or saying 'Jor Old Cobisou Uobserew," there may be faint apprehensions that he has been "taking something." Servauts receive the highest prices in the world in St. Petersburg. Girls that can cook get 40 a month, and all iu that proportion. After St. Peters a burg, Romania, and London pay ser vants best, and then the United Stages. " Will the galvanic rings euro de pression," asked a lady. What has caused the complaint, ma'am V asked the doctor. 44 The loss of my husband," mournfully replied the lady. " Then you had better get a wedding ring," answered the doctor. A gentleman sat down to write a deed and bejian with "Know all women by these presents." "You are wrong," said a by-stander, 44 It ought to be, 4 kuow all men,' " ,4 Wry well," aus swered the other, 44 if all women know it, all meu will, ot course." A colored member of the Virginia Legislature was recently called to ac count for expressing himself unsraui uyitically in debate. He subsequently explained that if he did not express himself grammatically, it was the fault of those who kept him iu slavery. A Connecticut fisherman one day baited his hook with a live fro;r. After patieutly waiting for some time for a bite as .he. .chatted with a friend, he found that his lively bait had swum ashore, and sitting quitely on .a rock by his side. He wound up his line and went home. Two ministerial candidates for a va cant pulpit, Adam and Low, having to preach on the same Sunday, Low, who preached in the morning, took for his text 44 Adam where art thou?" In the evening, Adam gave his return shot, by selecting for bis text, 44 Low here am I." A drawing master, worrying his'pupil with contemptuous remarks upon his lack of ability, ended by asking, "Now sir, if you were going to draw me, what part of me would you commenc with first? The boy, with a meaning look into his master's face, answered very quietly, 44 your neck, sir." A notorious gambler, who had ruined his constitution by hih living and hard drink, said to his physician, the other day, 44 Doctor, I suffered the pains of the damned." You may think so now grimly replied the physician 44 but you just hold on a little while, and you'll find out the difference." The following is reported in the pro ceedings of a late meeting of the I3os on Radical Club : There was a momen tary hush, and then a voice which said 44 The world needs silence I" and anoth er in response, 44 Why, then, did you break it?" After this, no one seemed of so rash a couarge as to speak." A lady was bored to death the other evening-by an immovable caller, who talked poetry, delighting especially in Tennyson. He finally inquired of her what passage in Tennyson she liked best She replied it was a verse she could not recollect the exact langauge, but it ran somewhat as follows, and was very expressive of her feelings : " And she said, I nrn very weary, Ho goetb not, she said, I'm u-weary, a-wcary, ; I wish I were in bed." A Perplexed Frenchman. A French man said to an American, 44Thereisvon word in your language I do not com prehend, and all ze time I hear it. Tat tletoo, tattleton vat you means by tat tletoo?" The American insisted that no such word exist, in English. While he was saying so bis servant came to put on coal on the fire, when he said, 4Th re, John, that'll do."
