Lee, baa gone below for a fresh supply of goods. This firm design purchasing a stock that will meet the demands of the people. The Ellendale Mill Co. are constantly re ceiving additions to their stock, and are pre paring to sell goods as cheap or cheaper than ny other store in Polk County; at the Brick Store, Main Street. According to report of N. Garwood, Clerk of Dallas Sehool District, there are in the Dis trict 233 scholars drawing school funds, 112 female, and 121 males, an increase over last year of 33. Mr. J. D. Lee has just returned from Port land, and corroborates the statement made in another column concerning the high water along the railroad line below Oregon City. He atates that the trains are unable to run through, die depth of the water being several feet. Mr. T. G. Richmond inform us that the Hunting Club had rare sport on Wednesday, running a wolf. The dogs started him early in the morning, and ran htm some estimate the distance as high as forty miles, before they saught him. The animal proved to be a gray wolf of the largest size. Again we chronicle the fact of dull times and lack of business, owing to rainfall and high water. We have received no mail from below this week, and the mails from the South have been irregular. The waters hereabout have been higher this week than at any other time daring the winter. Last Thursday afternoon, Linn Nichols, a lad about ten years of age, son of Frank Nichols, of this place, went into a pasture, in company with two other boys, to catch a horse. They drove the animal into a corner, and as Linn approached the animal, it kicked him on the side of the bead, breaking the lower jaw, and otherwise injuring bim severely. He now lies in a critical condition. Business. As we intend to make onr paper one of interest to the people, we wish to give all an opportunity to get it, and as an induce ment to parties to get up clubs, we propose to anyone sending us a club of five to one address, we will send a copy of the Star Spangled Ban tier for one year gratis. For a club of ten to one address, we will send Demoreat't Mntjazint for one year gratis to the one sending us the club. It will be observed, by reference to our .Subscription Rates at the head of the paper, 4hat we have reduced the price to $2 per year, -nd$l 25 for six months. We make this offer M a starter to show the people that we mean " Business." SyUndertakers grow rich and gave yards reek with the mouldering bones of thousands vwho prematurely fall as victims to those relent less destroyers, Catarrh, Bronchitis and Con sumption. The two latter diseases are but the children of the former, which is easily and purely cured by using Dr. Sage's Catarrh Rem edy, while for the cure of the two latter diseases nothing eqaals Dr. Pierce's Alt. Ext. or Golden Medical Discovery, Both medicines are sold by druggists, er the Catarrh Remedy may .by obtained by enclosing sixty cents to Dr. R. V. Pierce, Buffalo, V. Y. "If a life-renewing1 fountain, like that sought for by De Soto, should burst from the earth at every man's door, thousands would turn their backs on the healing springs within arms-reach, to run after pretended remedies. The observant, everywhere, accept Dr. Wal keb's VisegAR B itt ebs as the greatest medi cinal blessing of modern times, but on the other band multitudes dose themselves with poison, rhile this well-spring of health is accessible to all. It purifies the animal fluids, regulates .every function of the body, calms the nerves invigorates the vital organs, and is an nn fail ing specific for digestion. SCROFULOUS DISEASES require a powerful detergent to remove them from the system. Bristol's S&rsaparilla possesses all the necessary properties. Its searching, pu rifying, and healing powers speedily change the depraved nature of the secretions and the blood; moderate doses of Bristol's Pills, taken at tame time, purge out the foul humors set Up? by the Sarsaparilla, and cure is effected. Telegraphic Summary. Washington, March 11. The Re publican caucus this evening, after a longt discussion, adopted a resolution for a bill for the protection of Southern loyalists, and to report to another meet iug of the caucus next Monday even ing, when the subject will be farther considered and a conclusion probably reached. Resolution was offered to day and considerable argument ruabe in favor of taking ready action upon the bill to re peal the duties on coal and salt and the Southern Railroad bill and several other bills, but the caucus definitely decided that no measure sh ill be enacted this session except such as may relate to the condition of the Southern States. The Democratic Conscverative cau cus appointed a Dctuocrtic and Conserv ation Congressional Committee, charged with proper duties in regard to elections and other political matters, with power to appoint its own Chairman, and ap point a sub-committee, as a resident Ex ecutive Committed for the distribution of Documents and other campaign works Casserly is the member from California. J. II. Slater, for Oregon; C. W. Ken dall, for Nevada, and S. A. Meritt, for Idaho. Washington March 13. The remov al of Mr. Sumner from the Committee of Foreign Relations continues to be the exciting topic of conversation in all political circles, and its probable effect on the future of the Republican party. Ihe re-nomination ot uen: Urant is freely discussed. All the Republicans, except a few of his personal enemies in the Senate agree that bumner s removal is very damaging to the party; in short it was a gross political blunder. The Democrats are highly elated about the affair. They say the re nomination of Grant is inevi table, as there is no man sufficiently strong to oppose him; but his defeat wih follow as a necessary result of the dis sensions occasioned among Republicans. Many leading Republicans, on the other hand, assert that Grant's re-nomination is now out of the question, and that it is necessary to begin to look for a more available candidate if the party is to be saved from defeat. They arjrue that the entire New England Republicans will be hostile to him on account of Sumner's removal; that it has alienated, also, all the original auti-slavery men throughout the couutry, who have al ways formed an active working element in the Republican party. There is al ready much canvassing relative to the merits and pupularity ot many promi nent public men, with a view to their possible candii a y f r the Republican nomination. Among other names are Colf'az, Blair, Sumner, Logan, Schenck and Cox. A Rill to relieve political disabilities of a larsie class of persons in the South was negatived in the House, there not being a two-thirds vote. Various Rills were introduced, among others, one to give proceeds of sales of mineral land to the Sutro Tunnel Com pany, of Nevada ; one to rebuild the Orphan Asylum at Charleston; one to protect settlers io California, to remedy injustice; the Itepublican Caucus Com mittee recommended the passage of what is known as the Rutler Rill, to protect the South from Ku Klux out rages. The military features of the Rill were strongly opposed in caucus. The United States -and Mexican Commission has decided, on broad principles, that no reclamation lies against the Mexican Republic for wrongs inflicted by Maximilian or in surrectionists. It is claimed that the New Hamp shire Senate will be Democratic, and that that party has gained nearly a thousand on the popular vote. The Democrats of that State are jubilant over the partial success. Arrest. J. G Holbert is now un der arrest at Portland upon an indict ment by the U. S. Grand Jury for sel ling liquor without license- The charge arose from the use of liquor with his so da fountain. People should learn that the law cannot be trifled with and that infraction when apparantlyof the most trifling nature are apt to be attended with serious consequences. The penal ty of this offense, if proven, is $100 fine and imprisonmcut. A punishment that seems quite unreasonable. To Newspaper Publishers of Oregon. You are respectfully requested to meet in convention in the city of Salem, on Friday, June 23, 1871, at 1 o'clock p. if., for the purpose of taking into consideration such matters as may be deemed best for the protection of the interests of publishers in this State; of establishing rates of advertising, news paper subscription, and ommision to be allowed advertising agents. Newspaper publishers of Washington Territory are respectfully invited to participate. Newspapers favoring this movement will please publish this call, adding the name of the publisher to the list of signatures. Respectfully, A. L. StinsoN, Willamette Farmer. 31. V. Rbown. State Rights' Democrat. S. A. ClaKHLE, Oregon Statesman. T. Patterson & Co., Herald. Upton & Howell, Salem Mercury. R. U. Tyson, Oregon Republican. Gleanings from State Exchanger. The steamer Activo says the States man is laid up probably for the want of business. A family named McNeal, consisting of a father and two daughters left Sal em, 13th inst. for Kalama, in a boat of their own. Tho first regular mail for Kalama left Portland Saturday morning the 11th inst. Mr. E. G. Ingalls formerly of Oswe go, acting postmaster. Land Slide. Last Saturday night a land slide took place at the Cascades which buried the railroad track so deeply that the O. S. N. Company will not be able to carry freight over the road for several days. Sunday's train on the O. & C, R. R. was stopped by high water on the track below Oregon City. The train ran on until it reached a depth of three feet, when it came to a stand. A train from below came up and took passengers, bag gage &c. Railroad Stations Maps are fil ed with the County Clerk of Marion county of the towns of Hubbard, the first station this side of Aurora, and the town of Turner, eight miles south of Sal em. There will soon bo filed a plat of Rrookviile, eight miles north of Salem. A raid was made by an indian, on the house of Mr. J. C. Bell io Salem, Sat urday evening. Mr. R. being absent the family becamed very much alarmed. While the intruder was in the rear of the house, Mrs. Rell passed out the front door, and alarmed Dr. Relt living near who summarily ejected the marauder from the premises. How WetT o to Hie ep. The immediate antecedents of sleep as languor, a sensation of weight in the upper eyelids, partial temporary relax ation of certain muscles, as shown by the nodding and dropping of the head upon the breast, comparative obtusencss to external impressions, yawning, &c, -call for uo special remark. The order in which the muscles lose their power is, however, deserving of a passing no tice. The muscles which, move the arms and legs usually become relaxed before those which support the the head and before those which maintain the body, in an erect position. There are many exceptions to this rule, as may be seen in church on a hot sunday, wlfen some of the congregation are almost certain to be seen with their chins quietly rest ing npon their chests, but yet tightly grasping their prayer books. Moreover in relation to the special senses, that of sight is first lost, the closing of the eyelids betting np a barrier between the retina and the external world ; but, in dependency of the eyelids if they have been removed by tho surgeon, or cannot be closed through disease the si;ht is still the first Hense whose fun ction is abolished. Some animals, as the hare do not shut their eyes when asleep; and in cases of somnambulism the eyes remain open, although the sense of sight is temporarily lost. The other senses, as Dr. Hammond tell us, are not altogether abolished ; but their acuteness is much lessened. Taste is the first to disappear, aud than smell ; hear ing follows ; and touch is the most per sistant of the senses. So, conversely, a person is most easily awakened by fac tual expressions next in order bv sound and then by smell. Once a Wook. SPECIAL NOTICES.
