It Oregon $ tpubl i t 'a it. DALLAS, S ATURDAYf JAN, 28. Not Forever. Not forever we are chastened By the might of sorrow's hand, ' Not forever pass we sighing Through the stranger's weeping land. 'There shall come a tape of gladness, When the heart mayf e'en forget, . In the melody of pleaure, All the ills that grieve it yet ;Not forever in the valiey. With the yawing gulf below. Nt forever 'mid the "criers Zion's pilgrim bandj shall go? They shall tread with cheerful footsteps On the pleasant sunny hills! 'They shall march, with mirth and music while their song th sweet air fills. Not forever shall the darkness Of midnight's lonelv hour Overwhelm the timid fpirit With the. terror of its power. There'ahall come the light of morning T5 the weary, waiting heart, And amid the joy of daybreak, Tears and sorrow shall depart. Not forever have they; left us, Those for whom wejshed our tears. Not forever shall our morning Darken long and weary years. ? There shall be a joyous meeting When the reign of death is o'er- -In the house where al is happy. f In thd land of evermore. And forever bajl the; teardrops Vanish from its face away, .And forever is the darknesp Banished where 'tis endless day And forever death and sickness, Sorrow, pining, pain and woe, iStill be known no more nor looked for In the house to which we go. EIOPEJIEJjT ON LONG ISLAND. The people of Locust Grove, a sub urban settlement in Newtown, Queen's County; were surprised by the report that the house of Mr. Graff, an editor on a tobacco journal, and seemingly well to do, was found open, and the furniture, household utensils and valu Abies, together with the family, were among the missing. It seems that about three months since, 31 r. Graff started on a commercial trip to Europe, and took with him his little daughter, a child of ten years of age, leaving Mrs. Graff, a handsome and engaging woman of thirty-five years of age, to await his Teturn, which is expected soon. All the luxuries a fond husband could lavish oc hia wife, a handsome carriage, horses, splendid furniture, a house fitted up with all the modern improvements, books, paintings, ftc, were all here, together with an inters esting little daughter, the pride , of the household. Hardly had Mr. Gruff got beyond the shore of the country on his outward bound trip, before a visitor made his appearance in the person ot a young, sleek-looking man, with down on his upper lip, whose attentions to the wife and mother began to attract notice. This personage was none other than a Mr. Latting, not twenty. one' years of age, It is reported that he has-been seen coming from the house late at night, and instead of making his exit from the natural opening, leaped oat of the bed-room window. Sunday night, furniture began to be removed, and before morn in 2 not a vestijje re- mained. The horses were iounu in a stable at Hunter's Point, where the couple had left them, after taking the ferry-boat for Now York. ' The wliere abouts of the party are not now known. A week or two since Mrs. Graff com menced to make up extra dresses, an 1 the , supposition 19 that they left for Europe. The course of the lady has seemed most strange to most of her acquaintances. World. . . j AMERICAN ARMS. The Catling MItralleuse Adopted by the British Government A British journal thus concedes the merits of one of the latest triumphs of American skill, the Uatung Mitrail leuse : " This weapon, sixty batteries of which have been ordered for the British army has a bore of 042 inches, and weighs 3 cwt. 2 qr. 12 lb, the weight of the gun carnage being 4 cwt. 3qr. 7tt. The lead bullet weighs 380 .grains, and the charge of powder 80 grains. Each battery, so far as the 'trials at the ranges at Plumstead Marshes and Shoeburyness have gone, will have a hitting, wounding and kill ing power among broken infantry on uneven ground; at ranges of from 200 yards to 1,000 yards, of 900 agminate ; but in close column of infantry, a bat tery would hit 1,200 a minute. In the hands of British gunners its real mili . tary value and service uses have yet to be tried in the exigencies and vicissi tudes of actual warfare. In adopting this new weapon into the service, it has been found that no new class of gun can meet all requirements. Within ordinary rifle range, or up to 1,400 vards, the small Gatlini was found more effective than field guns, but with longer ranges the field guns had the ' - m - n . rrs t best ot it. ihe new gun possesses a maximum of destructive power with a minimum of weight and size, is easy to maneuver, and can be fired with accu racy of aim without recoil thousands of 'times. The J00 or 400 milrailleuscs ,'ju8t ordered will be manufactured at Colt's Armory, Hartford, Connecticut. As they arrive in England, they will be brought to Woolwich, and will form a new and special branch of the lloyal Artillery, their batteries being distiuct from those of thtj field guns." . A victim of unrequited affections, concludes as follows : " I sat me down and thought profound y This maxim wise I drew ; It's eaiser far to like a girl Than make a girl like you." ' A man with one eye laid a wager with another person that he, (the one- eyed person), saw more thau the other. Ihe wager was accepted. " lou have lost," says the first; "I can see two eyes in your face, and you can only see oue in mine." A clergyman beini; much pressed by a lady ot his acquaintance to preach a sermon the first bunday after. her mar riage, complied, and chose the following passage in the Psalms as his text: 4 And there shall be abundance of peace while the moon endureth." While passing a house in Va. two drummers observed a very peculiar chimney, unfinished, and it attracting their attention, asked a flaxen-haired urchin standing near the houe if it "drawed well."' The aforesaid urchin replied : " Yes it draws the attention of all the d d fools that pass this road." A Quaker told a young man just married : " Friend thou art now at the end of all thy troubles." The bride turned out a vixen, and in a week the youug man came back with the up braiding remark : " I thought you told me I was at the end of my trou bles." Ho I did, friend, but I did not say which end," A Chicago paper is responsible for the story that a few days since some boys iu that city dropjred an anvil weighing 200 pounds out of a fourth story window on the head of an African who waa passing and he had them arrested, lie said he was willing for the boys to have 'fun, but when they jammed a ' gemman's" hat down over his eyes and spotted it in that way, the law must take its course. A Yankee, it is alleged will geek the almighty dollar even in the jaws of death; but a Frenchman, it seems, will risk life for the sake of a dinner. At one of the German fortresses in the Baltic, an inquisitive Frenchman was seen prowling about the moat. On be ing arrested as a spy, he established his innocence by producing his handker chief; it contained three dozen frogs. He was catering for a dinner instead of searching for a weak point. A woman correspondent complains to a Cal. editor that her husband is cross when she wants him to kiss the baby, and is offered the folio wingjrecipe: 'Mix arsenic with honey, and spread the compound thickly on the darling's lips, and tell him if he will kiss the little innocent once more you will never come fooling about him again when he i3 tired. 11. will smack that infant with cheerful alacrity, lick his lips with puzzled pleasure, and you will 1 m nave no turther occasion to worry a weak minded editor with your private nonsense. Fuod or Plants. There is said to be carried off from the soil nine pounds of lime in twenty-five bushels of wheat, nine pounds in fifty bushels of oats, and fifteen pounds in thirty-eight bushels of barley. There are thirty-five pounds of lime in two tons of rye grass, one hundred and twenty-six pounds in two tons ot clover, one hundred and forty pounds in twenty-five tons of turnips, and two hundred and seventy pounds in nine tons of potttoes. Some soils contain an abundance of lime for a thousand years, while other soils re quire an occasional application of lime as a fertilizer. A Comparison The farmer who refuses to learn from the better practice of his neighbors, and depends solely on his own personal knowledge, mav be compared to the little spring bubbling from the earth always the same, while the farmer of more enlarged mind, who adopts the better practices of his neigh borhood, and proffts by all the improve ments around him, may be likened to a noble river, which is fed from many fountains, and which bears upon its bosom the accumulated wealth of expe rience. Weigh well the contrast here presented, between the narrow-minded farmer, who is exhausting the riches of the soil which Providence designed for his posterity, and the progressive far mer whoso labors are adding millions to the products of the country. r A! When we have a llairroud from Portland South on the West Side of the River, it will open up a new era for the citizens of the coun ties through which it will pass. Everyman can take his wife, leave the children with their uncle, go to Portland and gather up a full list of supplies, at a very trifling expense, and at a figure far below country prices, providing there were not merchants through the country up with the times. But there will be plenty of live men in the arena. All the old fogies will have to give way, buy themselves a little farm, and retire to quiet life. This is not. sarcastic, but downright truth, as history of the past proves. And I expect those that are now little children will relate lo their children inrtimo hereafter how that, in the olden time, over there, on the bill just across Salt Creek, at Ed. duff's old Store House, M. M. Ellis inaugurated the now practice of selling goods at Portland prices, and paid the freights himself. Come and fee me.
