b J, DALLABATUEDAY, JAN. 21. Ancient ana Modern Times In ancient ages, man was wholly man, And woman was only woman; . The former was a God, a god almost, The Utter only human. 'The' former was Hrd (upon the earth, And great one 'neatb the sky, 'While it was woman 'a at his will to lire Or at his will to die. Jtlen were the singers then, and sung themselves, They were the herpes then, .And all the poets men were all in all, And all were made for men. -They were the sayer then of every word, They were the thinkers too of every thought ; They were the doers of every deed, And all the rest were naught. ; But tow perchance it may be for the worst, Or for the best, there's none ean tell The hero pales before the heroine, -T And e'en a battle's nothing to a belle. The world is woman's. Woman fills the world And rules it when she fills it with a sway That men may satirize but still submit, , That man may own but still obey. A woman is the main-spring of man His motive pewer; : Be b the clock that simply serves to strike, With his? own bands, the hour, v i t j -V-Be thinks he strikes the time to please himself, Sometimes he does, but 1c is sure as sight v -That wheu she wishes day, then it is day. And when she wishes night, 'tis night. A man in modern times is but a gong ; He makes the noise, 'tis true, Bnt woman's is the hand that strikes it so The deeds men do Are done by woman. Every mortal hour . Of every mortal day Does teach that tho' the man may act the part, The woman writes the play. Our Youug Men. ? The following from the Elorida Ex press, will apply to many other places as well as Pensacola, and we cotmneud it to the consideration of the class for whom it is specially intended : filn conversation with a gentleman of cultivation and large experience, as well as a life resident of Pensucola, in our sanctum the other day, of the future g respects of the city and her citizens, e used an expression in regard to the young of the city, that was of such a character, having so much truth in it that we do not hesitate to repeat it for the benefit of those interested. He said How can you expect our city to improve with so many drones in the hive?", No city in the country has jjq many young men it, wrocan, if they have the enterprise and industry, con tribute to the wealth of the luuntry in 'which they live. Our lau is are cheap, -of easy cultivation, and from actual ex periments, produced abundance of the natural growth of ourclimute. Ifthey would throw off their coats, and take hold of the plow, mother earth, with proper care and cultivation, would yield them a bounteous return fur their labor',. This is no idle dream ; let any one of them who has energy to, become a producer, instead of a consumer, make the inquiry of any who applies intelli gence with labor in the cultivation of our piny woods' soil, and they will be astonished at the returns that a little hard labor will make ; not only the re turns which rssult from it, but the in dependence that the idea of bang able to support themselves well and to con tribute to the general valfare of the community in which they live, will in fuse into them giving a broader and tnore expanded idea of the duties devolving apon them as men. . To be sure this requires labor, time, care and patience j but who is not will ing to labor, for the benefits derived from it in the future. Nearly every emp'oytnent in the city is overstocked with labor, and here is a field of indus try that is open to any one who will -work intelligently and with a will, a sure investment; all that it requires is labor p erseverence to bring forth its reward, and perhaps there is no country in the world where so many inducments are offered for the soil, where the re turns are so liberal, and where it is treated with so little consideration as Around Pensacola. , fit; has become a common thing among our people and those visiting us, to. 'speak of our " poor pine laods," when, in fact, these lands are valuable for cultivation, and can, with proper handling, be made to yield more in ac tual valuable than the rich lands of Alabama. ' This statement of ours will seem to lome of onr people absurd and vision ary ;,but we hope to be able, in a few days, to furnish facts and figures that will convince the most skeptical of the trnth of the statement; ' Casualty.- George Bidwell, a stu dent in Christian College, while cutting wood for the fire, last Saturday evening by an unfortunate glancing of the ax, made a frightful gash in his foot, sever ing the bones of two of his toes, the blade passing up into the foot. Dr. Thomas. W. Shelton was very, fortu nately; in the Villace. and nrnmnlv r Dlaced the toes and dressed th 00 that the toes will proably be saved. Mtstenger, ' Jenkins undertook to quote poetry in praise of woman, but got his author ity slightly mixed, as follows. "0 woman in our hours of ease, Uncertain eoy, and hard to please; But seen too oft. familiar with her face, : We first endure, then pity, then embrace." An author, ridiculing the idea of ghosts, asks how a dead man can get into a locked room ? Probably with a skeleton Key. Miscellaneous Marriage Imprisonment for life. ... The men of the day most popular with women - Hymen. "I come to steal !" as the rat said the trap, " And I spring to embrace," as the trap replied to the rat. A man who cannot mind his own business, is not fit to be trusted with another's. Never despise the value of small things- Think of yourself when only an eightpounder I A witty lady being asked her opinion of moustaches, replied, " I always set my face against them." A writer of a leve tale in describing his heroine, says : " Innocence dwells in the rich curls of her dark hair." In Columbus City, Iowa, there is a young lady who boasts that her lover's collar almost goes round her waist. : A secret society of young women ex ists in Memphis. " It seems not, was the reply. Don't judge of moral chaiactcr by tho face. The frog is more innocent than many an animal that has a much handsomer physiognomy. A one-legged young woman in Chi' cago advertises for a husband similarly situated, in order to utilize the odd shoes of the pairs she buys. A pious young girl of Keokuk, Iowa, has broken off her engagement because her lover insisted upon devoting Sun day evening to courting exercise. '- The Prussian raids into the country Southwest of Paris are terribly de structive. Even Solomon an all his glory was not a raid like one of these. A Davenport lady had her petition for divorce granted after the had sold her property and turned over one third ($2,000) to her husband for mainte nance. In Lawton, Mich, a man choked his wife just because she knocked him down with a stick of stove-wood and threw a bucketful of scalding water on him. The brute was fined 815. An infatuated N.'Y, girl who fell in love with a stranger at u fair, and en gaged herself to him, would not credit the stories about him till she was intro duced to his wife and two children. The deceiver fled. A young lady, at an examination in grammar, was asked why the noun bachelor" was singular. She replied immediately, with much naivete, " be cause it is very singular they don't get married." A blushing Cincinnati damsel, recen tly applied to the Judge of Probate for a marriage certificate, excusing her self by stating that as her affiance ran on the riverjhe had no time to attend to the business himself. " Hallo 1" ejaculated an anxious guardian to his lovely niece, as he en tered the parlor, and saw her in the arms of a swain who had just popped the question and sealed it with a smack, ' what's 4he time of day now V 14 1 should think it was about half past twelve," ws the cool reply ; you see that we are almost ono I" A gentlemen was one day composing the music of a rondeau for a lady j to whom he paid his addresses. It If Generally understood throuehout Polk County that I am selling goods from 25 to 59 per cent, cheaper than any other 8tore this side of Portland. Now I do not offer this as an advertisement, but simply as an explanation. wnen we uave a nairroad from Portland South on the West Bide of the River, it will open up a new era for the citizens of the coun ties through which it will pass. Every man can take bis wife, leave the children with their uncle, go to Portland and gather up a full list of supplies, at a very trifling expense, and at a figure far below country prices, providing there were not merchants through the country up with the times. But there will be plenty of live men in the arena. All the old fogies wilt have to give way, buy themselves a little farm, and retire to quiet life. This is not sarcastic, but downright truth, as history of the past proves. And I expect those that are now little children will relate to their children in time hereafter how that, in the olden time, over there, on the bill just across Salt Creek, at Ed. duff's old Store House, M. M. Ellis inaugurated the now practice of selling goods at Portland prices, and paid the freights himself. Come and see me.
