V - 4 V 2 TOfl&COUflTyflVS, DALLAS, SATURDAY, OCT. 22, 1870. T&eeetire population of Oregon, according to the Iat census, is a fraction loss than 91,- A yo gentleman by the name of M. M. "Dglesby, from Corvallia, has secured the Dallas School, which will commence next Monday. 1 T. B. Waite, of Polk County, invented and manufactured a new press for pressing hay, which took the first premium at the lata State "Fair. The Midden death of our estcerccd friend, 3Dr. Bond, is greatly deplored by the citizens of DaRas and vicinity, in whose memory he ong will live. Wr have received the first copy of the i Christian jftitcngcr, printed at Monmouth, in . . Ibis County, edited by Prof. Cambe'.L It starts out well. We wish it abundant success, Capt Lafollette, the agent at Grande Ronde, I desires as to state that no m whomsoever T will be permit cd to enter upon the reservation for the purpise of raaaia,; horse with the Indians. , . Paucnixa. Ttev. A. W. Sweeney wilir01,,v, . i preach in the M. E. Church South, at early candle lighting on Friday preceding the 5th Sunday in this month, (2Sth). Remember the time. DALLAS this week presents'quite a lively ap- j pearance. The merchant, the UacksraVh, the J carpenters, and men of all trades, occupations and professions seem to be busy save and Ex cept the poor lawyers, who alone are Idle. Senator Corbet visited the Grande Komi reservation, 'and was much pleased with the situation, and matters pertaining to the Indians generally. The people of Oregon have roason to be proud of the eourse pursued by Senator Corbet since he has acted in that capacity. "Wa call attention to the advertisement of Mem. Burchard & Powers, offering the Home Shuttle Sewing Machine at $20, II. B. Morrill, travelling agent. This is a good chance for j those who require this machine. They will always be found on hand at 139 First Street, Portland. 'We.Teceived a call from our enterprising friend Mr. Litchfield, from Grande Itonde, wbd informs ns that all is quiet on the upper Yam- .bill and Indiaa reservation, and that the Indi- ans were very anxious to have the land sur- Teyed in small parcels, and assigned to each one aa bis or her own property, in accordance with the terms of the treaty, so that tliey can call it their own, and transmit it to their cnuaren. This community was shocked a few days since by the announcement of the death of John Frederick, an old citizen. Dr. bites, who bad charge or the case, larorms us mat the ease presented the appearances of small pox. J9 rkdiiSa n m atv thaw kallAVA in VtAVil been swine-pox, but Dr. Sites is still of the opinion that the ease was a modified form of smallpox. We think, while it is unnecessary to be excited, it is well enough to be carefal for the present, at least, We are gld to know that our former law partner and most esteemed friend, W. C. Whit son, is giving great satisfaction as one of the Judges of Idaho Territory. His lats charge to the grand jury of Idaho City, at which time there was pending a large amount of criminal business, is said to be the most able one ever delivered in the Territory, all of which takes us not by surprise. Wr know the Judge as we do ourself, and he is, without doubt, the best jurist ever called to the bench in that Terri tory, and his worth will be felt and acknowl edged as be mingles with and hisacquaintance ' U formed by the people. . ' ' iSTcw Firv. We learned, while on a visit tu McMinneville last week, that Mr. Tongue, of MiHsboro, and a Mr. Stott, who was admlited to the'thar at the present term of the Supreme Court, have formed a law partnership, and Intend locating In Yamhill County perhaps at Iafayette--to practie their profession. Mr. Tongue hsAl ready gained some notoriety as a practitioner. Of 25r. Stott's abilities we know 3io thing, having met bim but once, but are .informed thatihe passed the examination, pre 2arstory todmission, ereditabljv They have selected a good field, and we predict for them a uccessal career. , ibeA destructive fire occurred Jin towa on Thursday night about 9 '- o'clock, consuming the large black .smith's shop of Asa Shrieve, also & wagon nd paint shop in which S. Gar rison was interested with Shrieve. The 1 -citizens were out in mass, but could do -nothing but save the adjacent buildings. 3The fire occurred within 200 feet of 'iw .domicile, and presented a frightful appearance, loss to Shrieve ia not less than 3,000 ; that of Garrison uot so great. we hope our citizens 'will con tribute liberally to assist the parties to re build. We had Psure yestcrOay of shaking the hand of Dr. Grubbs, 6f Salem, who has cotne to Dullaa1 to prac tico his profession. .His card will ap. pear next week. j ' The trouble with onr mail line from Saletn to this ' place has finally been settled, and it has been dccilcd that j our townsman, Jessie Lewis, is eutitled to carry the mails. Today is the anniversary of the Bat tle of Nations, wheich occured near eipsicon thh 18th Oct., 1813. It is generally understood, in tbe German camps, that a bombardment of Paris ! II .1 1 ' 1 1 from an ine naileries sunuuauouusiy, would be opened on this anniversary day. The world is waiting for the vents of to-day It is estimated that there are fully 600,000 armed Prussians on French soil. Nothing heard from Laferte St, Au- bin. At last accounts a Daiue was era minent at that point. The Prnssians still occpy Meury quietly. They make no uemonstraiions against xiuise anu Tours, and it is not believed they wilf at present. Political affairs in Paris are unalter ed. The people are calm and hopeful. The Prussians now infesting the city screen themselves behind their power ful batteries. So tremendous is the French fire that the plains are absolute ly swept by it. The best gunners in the world are collected in Paris. The Prussians are threating an im mediate bombardment of Paris. This is ioinosible. . As Ions as French forts outside are so well served, no euemy can approach near enough. The place is to be given up to a Grrmn garrison, tin? troops to be disarmed and puffer to re main on parole, and not take part in the war. The Prussian ministerial or gan says ccpo'ialion for peace on the j part of n u'rals is useless. France must submit unalterably to the terms already stated. The following particulars of an engagement at liag beaux are just received : At 9 o'clock in the morning the French opened a heavy artillery fire, which was vigorous ly returned by the Prussians. The French then advanced on the double quick the Garde Mobile leading. A battle ensued, and the Prussians' gosi tion was carried at the point of the bay onet. Germans, unable to withstand the firing hurled against tbctn, re sorted to several stratagems, but failed in all, and were at length dispeased. The Mobiles entered Bigncaux, where the Prussians had erected barricades We also c'.ip (ho following from the ChronUle : The Central Pacific Railroad ftirec lora, on last Saturday, made the trip on the road from San Jose to Oakland, a distance of fortyseven miles, in lets than an hour. - Thomas Mooney' time, from the California Street bank to Clifton, Canada, f,was the fastest on record, u - :-y.'.' ,? Senator Eugene Casseily, in response to a serenade, a few even- ings since, ascribed the prevailing dull ness of the times in California to the high rate ot taxation imposed by the Federal Government, which had para lyzed the energies of the nation, and that California felt it as well as her sister states east of the Rocky Moun tains. Senator Cornelius Cole made a speech in answer to a serenade on Thursday evening last, and ascribed tbe hard times to the changes in busi ness consequent upon "the completion of the Pacific Railroad. He believed that with a littto time, and more attention paid to manufactures, California would come out with flying colors, These are the opposite views of California's states men. Which are correct ? It seems to us that 'Cole' views are the more comprehensive and logical. Chronicle And we think the response of Cas serly sounds like the talk of a -schoolboy, while that of Cole is statesmanlike. The staid citizens of Maryevillo are recalling the days of their boyhood by playing at marbles for twenty-five cents a game. Business is said to be brisk thereabouts. MAIUUK!.
