nzsraas "COUNTY OFFICIAL PAPER. j DALLAS, SATURDAY, APRIL 30. A Free Feast. Walklngup the street the other af- tcrnoon, I noticed hanging around a .'grocery door,, where a large quantity of ' peaches were displayed, a ragged little t urchin, apparently eight or nine years old, whqseeyes were -fixed upon the luscious fruit with much the express . ?ton of a famished cat in sight of a ; tempting piece of meat. After w.atch , ing nis movements for a few minutes, I 1 accosted him : !.44Do ypu like peaches, sonny?" . -Yessir." . t ' .'Why don't you buy some V "bos I haVt got any money." .- . "Why don't you ask your lather for some t IIaVc got none. "Have you a mother ?" 'Yes. but she's sick ; and she ha'n't , cot any money, either. "Have you had any poaches -tins : .yearr' "fio. l picttea up one m me street - last week, a man throwed away. It was - , rotten, but it was good ; "How many do you think you could eat if you had them : The eyes of the little gamin distend k ed, and he drew a long breath. . "I don't know," he said at last. A quart was measured out. "Now sit down on the doorstep and jlct us see what you can do. No second invitation was needed Voroi- rlirl ft cfnrtnnr iirrnr In inn. gles feast with more gusto and delight .ppon a fresh piece of missionary, than jthat bo upon that quart of peaches. 'He fairly revelled in them. The juice oozed out from the corners of his , mouth, it covered his face, it ran down like the ointment upon the bard of Aaron, "even to the skirts ot his gar ,menLs," and by some unknown process it got into his hair. In fact, he was a .peach boy. Novelists have a way of saying he or .she did so and so "in less time than it took to write this." I might say the game in this case, for the boy's powers of eating were little short of miracu lous. "How do you feel now?" we anx Sously inquired, s the last peachi di.ap- lftltrf AnsY ln flfnn . w A ff . "So I could carry some home to ray mother. She ha'n't had any this year. Bat I was so hungry, and they tasted so good, I didn't think." In all his hunger and dirt he had not - forgotten that ; and as he sped with rapid footsteps toward his home, tight s ly grasping the paper bag which con tained his second quart, we thought with a pang of the hundreds of others in our city, with palates just as long ing, but who "havn't got any money." Providence Journal. , Burlingame's Funeral. A St. Petersburg correspondent of the New York World writes : The funeral was very simple, as Mrs. Burhngame wished no unnecessary dis play. The funeral service was read at the hotel at 11 a. m., by the English clergyman, in the presence of the fani ily and a few near friends. Not long after the body was taken in a quiet way to the Chapel of the English fac tory on the English Quay. The func ral was appointed for two o'clock, and by this hour the church was well filled with English and American residents, .officers ot the army and navy, and of ficials and aides-de-camp of the Em peror. The Emperor himself did not come, as he at firat intended, but after wards paid . a visit of condolence to Mrs. Burlingame. -The simple English burial service was performed, while around the body ,of the dead American stood Russians, Greeks, Catholics, Lutherans, Protest . ants, Mohammedans, Buddhists and Pagans, all reverently listening. When the service was over and all had pone, ..the fewriends carried the coffin down to the vault of the church, there to re main till sent to the United States. The coffin is of plain wood, inclosed in another of lead, which is covered with black cloth and neatly trimmed with white and silver. It was loaded with wreaths of laurel, camelias, and immortelles, but through them might be seen a silver plate bearing the simple inscription: - " f , : ,-J Avsov BlJRUSGAME, . 3 :Born at Berlin, New York.
